...so they say. Don't write about vampires because it's cliche and you'll have a hard time selling it--that's the wisdom. However the reality is vampire stuff is very popular providing you can give it a fresh twist.

So the challenge is to write an opening (13 lines) that indicates (fairly clearly) that it about vampires, yet hints that it is a fresh take or certainly has something about it, so the editor WILL want to read on despite it being the millionth vampire story he's read that morning.

Usual 13 line rules apply:

1) 13 lines only--KDW will snip 'em shorter otherwise.

2) Send to me if you want anonymity. I will post your story as you send it--you must put in any formatting you want (italics, etc.). I will not change anything afterwards so make sure it is right before you send it. Format as on the entries thread:

http://www.hatrack.com/forums/writers/forum/Forum7/HTML/000161.html

3) You have until midnight of Wednesday 17th March GMT to post or send to me.

4) Judging will be open from midnight of the 17th to the following Wednesday 24th midnight GMT. Non-voters will be disqualified and any votes they get will knock down.

5) If you send me your entry and don't see it posted, query me, but give me 12 hours or so to do it.

Comments on this thread...entries on the other (or to me).

Does it have to be out of whole cloth, or can I use something that is completed, rejected, and amiably doing nothing at all right now?

Hey, if you have something that already fits--use it. I guess the thought behind the idea was to write something to fit, or it isn't much of an immediate challenge, but you can play it any way you want--it's your entry.

Just remember it has to be CLEAR that it is a vampire story.

This challenge is really hotting up. Some brilliant ideas already. I can't wait to see what the week produces. Great challenge Skadder.

Yeah, seems to be a fairly good response considering I issued the challenge about 24 hours ago (if that!).

Remember that a writer is a poor judge of their own work. If you enter you get a chance to see how your intro measures against others and you get a load of comments.

Hrm... I have a first 13 from quite awhile ago, but I'm not sure if it fits the criteria as I don't know if it fully gives the "Vampire" vibe in the first 13

I'll just add it, if it isn't vampy enough I'll remove it

Who knew there were so many Hatrackians aching to write their own vamp story!? I wonder if it's just a fun genre to write, or retaliation against a certain popular series/movies and tv show goin around?

Yeah--post it. When the voting happens, people will have to bear in mind what the original challenge was; '...the challenge is to write an opening (13 lines) that indicates (fairly clearly) that it about vampires...' and judge against that as a criteria.

That and the intro being well written and creating a strong desire to read on.

Are you only allowed one entry into the challenge?

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

Yup...but you can edit/change your entry anyway you want up until the close of the competition. If you have had a better idea, then go for it.

I said that if people sent me their entries I wouldn't edit them, but as there have only been a few people that have sent them to me, I am prepared to repost anything new you care to send me. So send me a new set of 13 lines should you wish to (Either completely new or an altered version of the original).

Wednesday 17th at mIdnight GMT is when the competition closes. No editing after that as people will judging them then.

EDITED TO ADD:I had a re-think; although the above holds true for you for the main competition--it keeps it fair for people who may only wish to have one entry, I don't see why we can't have 'Vampires Suck...ENTRIES PART 2' where you can post your second entry.

This would be a SEPERATE competition from the main competition and would be for SECOND entries only . They would be judged against other secondary entries and would not be judged against primary entries.

Okay?

54 hours notice of the close of entries and the opening of judging. Please judge against the challenges criteria and select the stories you would most likely have wanted to read more of.

Try and vote without looking at what others have voted for--it's easy to be influenced. If you want to know how your's is doing then vote early--crit later. Then you can watch the votes as they come in.

So vote for your 1st, 2nd and 3rd and best title. Crits are voluntary but appreciated.

Four and half hours until close of competition.

See voting guidance above. Try and vote before reading how other people voted.
