Taking random musings a hop to the left and a step to the right...

I'll admit to the following misunderstood lyrics in my life... (though not necessarily sung wrong by me)

Take the back right turn (Paperback Writer)
Shake, Shake, Shake your water (Shake Sonora)
I think they got your Elliot (Correct line, "I think they got your alias" from Gloria)

I've made my confessions - who's next?

John

Not to hijack this thread...but my sister had the funnieset misunderstood words while growing up.

Bosom - your bottom (ever hear of a burning in your bosom LOL)

Invisible and invincible mean the same. She's playing ultimate frisbee and no one is passing to her. She says "What! am I invincible or something."

Hold me close, I'm Tony Danza....

I'm fond of spotting bad or redundant grammar...I'm fondest of the example in Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die": "...if this ever-changing world in which we live in..."

yeah I've heard of a burning in your bosom - in fact OSC has too....I'll guarentee it.

You could get some Bob Dylan live tracks, and play "guess what song Dylan's singing before he gets to the chorus."

From the Wallflowers' "One Headlight" I always thought it said "the incinerator" instead of "me and Cinderella" until I heard my husband singing along to it a couple of years ago.

Man did I feel dumb!

I could put up what I thought the lyrics to "Hotel California" were, but one of the words is obscene---actually, come to think of it, I'm not sure they're not singing that word.

Maybe they are when you play it backwards.

Posted by dreadlord (Member # 2913) on :

have you ever listened to a song and realized that it would sound pretty much the same backwards?

Last night I dreamt of some bagels....(Madonna; the real lyric is last night I dreamt of San Pedro)

Bakin' carrot biscuits! Every Day!! Now why would tom cruise dance in his underwear to a song about cooking?!!

Posted by philocinemas (Member # 8108) on :

"Another One Bites the Dust" kind of sounds the same backwards.

When I was a kid (~10) there was a pop song on the radio that had a line:
"you, me, and the sea" but I heard "you, me and Leslie".

I was completely convinced that this band knew me and wrote that song with me in mind. It took my mother months to convince me otherwise.

LOL

Whenever I hear the line 'I can't hide" from "I want to hold your hand", I keep hearing:
"I get high"...

OK I've had this argument 1,000 times. In the chorus of Nirvana's Rape Me, does he say "Am I the only one" ? or does he say "I'm not the only one" ?

Posted by Zero (Member # 3619) on :

(I've always thought the latter)

Posted by LAJD (Member # 8070) on :

According to google, the lyrics to Nirvana's Rape me include:

am i the Only one...

I love the internets....

Let's get it started...(which is actually corect in the PC version.) Uncensored version doesn't really make sense, it is: Let's get retarded.

Not really a misunderstood lyric, but closest thing I got.
Paperback writer is a great song. Shame on you, JohnMac, for misunderstanding the lyrics. Shame.(Rubs one index finger along other tsk tsking.)

That's funny, KayTi.

Is Tiny dancer what that misunderstood lyric comes from?
Could it be a fruedian slip. Perhaps you want Tony Danza to hold you? Or perhaps Elton John does? I dunno.

Rain, by Lennon sounds better backwards. (wink)

I heard an old Kenny Rogers song on the radio today. I always thought it went:
quote:
400 children and a crop in the field

When I was a kid I pictured a whole bunch of kids standing in the field waiting to be let inside.

LAJD,

I can find both on google.

The first few times I listened to "Fly" by Sugar Ray, I thought he was singing "Dance, little stranger, show me where you've been."

I had this weird image of the little dancing man in the red room from Twin Peaks running through my head...

LAJD--
Yep. I like it too.

CABaize,

Do you know who killed Laura Palmer? I do, but I'm not saying.

I love Twin Peak's.

Oh, and music... Well, my son sings I'm a child of God where the lyric says "with parents kind and dear" he sings "with parents kind of weird." which is true so I don't correct him.

I've seen three different sets of lyrics for "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" (The Hollies), and I believe none of them.

Bob Marley's Buffalo Soldier

I finally heard it correctly the other night on the radio, discovering to my surprise that he said Dreadlock Rasta, which makes a lot more sense than what I'd always thought: Travell'd across tha...

I guess it's my whole not-bothering-to-really-listen thing when it comes to music on the radio.

In the Metallica cover of the Misfits's Green Hell, on Garage Days ReRevisited, there's a break in the song in which I heard: "God of Po-ta-toes...Green Hell" (the real line is "Gonna Burn in Hell...Green Hell").

And Ozzy's Bark at the moon, I thought (and it really didn't make sense) "Knows what the beast is looking for; listening for and you'll hear him, Bark at the Moon"--the real version makes much more sense: "Those who the beast is looking for, listen in awe and you'll hear him...Bark at the moon."

My mother used to freak when I'd play Testament's Low (which is about punishing child molesters). She always heard "Lu-ci-fer Saves...", but the line was "Show some mercy."

My cousin thought the Green Jelly (Jello for all of us old-schoolers) song Cereal Killer was talking about "Folow your nose, it always knows, the flavor of derbs wherever it goes. Toucan the Son of Sam...", when it was actually, "Follow your nose, it always knows, the flavor of death, wherever it goes. Toucan the Son of Sam..."

Ok, this is from when I was little, but it's the song "Can't Hurry love." The real lyrics are of course:

Can't hurry love, no you'll just have to wait
She said love don't come easy
It's a game of give and take

A 7-year-old (or younger) me sang:

Hang up, tulip, no you'll just have to wait
She said lock up my feelings
You don't know you locked me up

So yeah...

Here are a few of my faves. I always sing (badly) the wrong lyrics any time I hear these songs. Although I now know better, it's just so much fun.

“Death is the first dancing turtle”
- should be “Death is the first dance, eternal”
from Metropolis Pt. 1 by Dream Theater

“She’s so popular”
- should be “Jeux sans frontieres”
from Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel

“I wanna rock and roll all night… and part of every day”
- should be “... and party every day”
from Rock and Roll All Nite by KISS

and finally (cover your eyes kids)

“Me shoot a wad into her hair”
- should be “I smell the rose in her hair” ...allegedly...
From Louie, Louie by the Kingsmen

Now if you’ll excuse me while I kiss this guy...
