Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere yet, but after only recently discovering the joy of Howl's Moving Castle I was saddened to learn that author Diana Wynne Jones passed away this weekend, apparently after a protracted battle with cancer.

I found a nice review of her literary contributions in this obit at the Guardian:

I'm sad to hear it. I remember reading a whole shelf of her books from my High School library. Homeward Bounders was one of my favorite for a long time.

Hopefully her name will live on as children everywhere get an opportunity to discover her books.

Neil Gaiman, who was her friend, wrote about her on his blog: http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2011/03/being-alive.html

I have to admit I'd never heard of her until this weekend. Now I'm interested in tracking down some of her novels.

I remember reading that she was ill. Very sad.

I can definitely recommend HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE. Also THE TOUGH GUIDE TO FANTASYLAND is worth a read.

Alas. I thought about doing a moment of silence thing here but it doesn't feel right. I think the right response would be to read and write.
