So, there is a possibility that I am going to the USA in 4 weeks time (if I can afford it - I'm still counting my pennies and hope the exchange rate stays where it is over christmas). Late notice, I know, but that's my sister's fault for springing a wedding on us. So I may have a week over there. So where should I go at this time of year? (I have to be in Colorado for half that week.) Any recommendations?

Whatever you do, don't drive on the wrong side of the road.

I mean, the left side.

If you're starting in Colorado, I'd say hit the closest touristy places around. Jennifer can probably tell you what's around. She's frum der.

Or Google could tell ya, but it's more fun to hear it from a person who's in the know.

Owing to inclement weather, the Sun Belt would be best if it's some four weeks away...Florida or Southern California would be your best bets, climatewise.

Unless you like to ski, or something...

You can't go many places if you need to count pennies. Colorado is lovely on it's own and half-a-week isn't a lot of time to get to many places.

If the wedding is in Denver, stay put and enjoy the mountains. Learn to ski. If it's in the western part of the state, and your bent to get out, I have two choices for you.

1)Head to Las Vegas. Fun place, great atmosphere. Even if you don't want to gamble, there are great shows to see. Also the Grand Canyon is near and so is Hoover Dam.

2) If you're eager to put faces to some of the names on here, go to Salt Lake City. Another lovely town and the defacto speculative fiction writers capital of the western hemisphere. I'm sure the local crowd (which includes Ms She Who Must Be Obeyed) would love to get together for lunch.

Just get ready for the cold. Bring snowboots and don't drive anywhere without a snowshovel.

Brendan, where in Colorado and what are your interests? I could fill up a year with activities just in this state. If you're close enough, maybe you, Jennifer, and me can meet for brunch or dinner one day. I've yet to visit Casa Bonita, which is themed Mexican restaurant that supposedly has terrible food but an atmosphere that more than makes up for that.

The roads should be safe enough for a trip to Las Vegas and Hoover Dam, which would both be worth your time. I have no idea what a trip to Salt Lake City might be like this time of year; although, from what I remember, it's especially gorgeous around Christmas.

Are you hoping to fly to multiple destinations, or are you planning on driving?

You know, I'll be in Denver early part of this week. If by chance, you'll be there this monday or tuesdays, I'd be happy to spend a lunch or dinner with you.

The location of the wedding is Loveland (where else?). So I'll probably be going through Denver and would love to put some faces to names. Aspirit, Jennifer (if you read this) I'd love to have a meal or coffee with you.

Salt Lake City and LA are both real options on the way in too. That was an option as part of the flight arrangements if I went with Qantas (however their strategic partner is American Airlines). I could easily spend a night in both locations on my way to Denver.

The date of the wedding is 01/17/12, so I'd probably arrive a couple of days earlier. So, no, I wont be there this coming week.

Central Calif. We feed the world from here. A bit chilly this time of year, but no snow...usually but the Fog can be killer... literally.

If it were the warmer months I'd suggest Bryce Canyon, but it's a pretty chilly place.

If you decide to come to Salt Lake City, we can probably get a group together for lunch on 20 January.
