Hello Hatrack Writers,

You may call me Conrad, if you'd like. Those who know my real name have been dead so long that history itself has forgotten they ever existed.

I am a Cicatrix, a Deathmaster, more of a something than a someone at this point. I would rather have died permanently the first time, centuries ago, and since then I have been chasing that final death.

For your sake, I hope we never meet...

"Cicatrix?" You're scarred?

So you've been around a while, I take it? Who is the most interesting person you've ever met in your romp through history?

Robert...The name Cicatrix is the best title given to my kind, and the least offensive! It well describes the issues they have had with us. Every time you try to cut someone like me out of the population, I just grow back stronger. Over time I fade, but not likely in your lifetime, I have too many honorable deaths to find.

Wetwilly...The most interesting I told of once before, and will not speak of him again to strangers, but King Leonidas was an "interesting" man. I think he suspected something by the end. There were seven of us among them at the end, not among his men, obviously, but with those who also stayed. He saw us die, but then fight again the next day. I give him praise for the simple fact that he saw, but asked no questions. He saw us as what we were, allies but not friends.

I'm going to be honest; I don't know what you're talking about, Cicatrix. What are you?

I was simply a man once, until the first time I died. I am not immortal in the purest definition of the word, I still die. I simply return. Hence the term deathmaster. I am drawn to battles wherever they are, so I and my kind have been at almost every major battle in history. Thermopylae, Little Big Horn, Battle of Roman Nose, The Crusades, both World Wars, etc. We are all desperate to die permanently, but we are kept here until we pay whatever price we are required to pay. Confusing, I know. We don't know ourselves how everything works, because those who discover how to die permanently obviously don't talk afterwards!

Why are you drawn to battles?

Do you have any theories about how this works? You know, like who is in charge, who is making you pay, what they're making you pay for, all that stuff? I know you don't know, but you must have ideas or beliefs about it.

I died a coward the first time. Not only that, but a lot of my men died with me, needlessly. I am drawn to battles looking for the one thing that I know helps me...an honorable death. My own theory is that as soon as I have died an honorable death, a good death, for each man I lost the first time I died, that I would finally die permanently.

The problem with that, and the reason I have been around so long, is that every time I die a good death, I come back stronger. When I find a foe who can best me, they can't do it twice!

So how does that work on a personal level? Do you have any meaningful relationships? Friends? Lovers? Is there a Mrs. Cicatrix?

Posted by Lance Conrad (Member # 9901) on :

I am married.

No meaningful personal relationships otherwise. Let's just say that most people find me, shall we say, irritating?

Explain this honorable death to me please. I'd like to know more about the first time you died as a coward. What was happening that you ran?
