Under new management. A fairly typical country inn, but known far and wide for it's excellent kitchen. (What else would you expect of an inn run by a Baker?)

Red entered the common room with a presence. His clothes were tailored and dusty from the road. Taking off his hat, it was obvious where he got his name. He ran his fingers through his hair and dropped his saddle bags on the floor. The desk was equipped with a small handbell that Red picked up and gave a sturdy shake.

"Hello, there. You've got company!"

(Anyone wants to answer the bell, feel free.)

Jean sat in a corner of the Inn in her Gene disguise, drinking from an opaque bottle. She thought she played the drunk role rather well. No one would ever know she was just drinking water. Her plans always worked... except when they didn't.

She watched as the redheaded man entered, and kept her eyes on him, but simultaneously watched nearly everything else too.

(Note: If you don't read her bio, then she's a she pretending to be a he. Wearing a seargeant's uniform with a custom-made Maverick pistol, as well as a Maverick rifle. She's short, stocky, and wears what is technically a baseball cap, though they are mostly unknown in his world except where Thrifts live, since they invented them here..)

Avery had China on a leash, and she was getting the knack. Some how, there seemed to be a bond he felt between the two of them. He was sure the dog had a special understanding of what Avery needed. She was pretty good at sidestepping holes and puddles in the path, and even people. That allowed Avery to concentrate on doodlebugging his way around town.

And, a lovely town it was fresh with spring upon her breast. People spoke kindly. He hadn't heard one shout of hysteria from anyone from fear of catching his blindness.

He clicked his tongue three times as a signal to China to stop and stop she did. She stopped and sat right down to scratch her ear. Avery let his doodle bug roam around and could see three people in the nearby inn. He took off his rather Quakerish looking hat to wipe his brow and the sun glowed like burnished copper off his hair.

He scooted in his boots to try to find the first step that led up to the inn and kicked it with the toe of his boot. That sent a shiver up all the connected planks which brought to him a vision of where exactly the steps, porch, door, and even the building itself stood.

He had the two letters ready for Mr. Baker. Works of art, he thought. Amazing this man has a building standing at all for all his bullying around. Avery grabbed the doorknob and considered kicking the door down, but considered how hard it was for a blind man to win a fight with a seeing man, though he could ... even if he did have to cheat a little. He walked in and stamped his feet to set up a vibration that would show him the way to go.

There was a woman sitting in one corner. Costumes didn't make any difference to a blind man. And a man standing at a counter. He decided that was where he should wait. He clicked his tongue three times and China stopped and sat on his boot.

"Afternoon," he said to the man waiting. Avery sniffed. Yum. His mouth set to watering. There had to be good food here.

Jean watched as the old man lead by the dog came in and stamped his feet. Now why did he do that, I wonder, she thought. From the dog I'd say he's blind, but what's that got to do with anything? She shrugged. She'd find out more later.

She stood up and walked over to the counter. "Hello," she said in her false voice "I'm Gene Dearc."

(We could do some interesting RPing with Avery knowing what Jean is.)

Red nodded in response before realizing how foolish such a gesture was when greeting a blind man.

"Pleased to meet you. Names Red, Red O'Leary. That's quiet the dog you've got there. Did you train him yourself?"

Turning to the second man, Red contiued, "Pleased to meet you Mr. Dearc." Red and clasped the man's hand. It was surprisingly slight for a man. Sickly perhaps?

"Well, I'll venture we eat well, but I can't say I'm impressed with a guester who leaves his customers standing at the door."

Shep took the last of the biscuits out of the oven burning his thumb in the process. A string of curses excaped him as he waved the thumb and finally sucked the burned spot.

He missed the old days when the "other" Bakers ran the place. No telling when they'd be back. In typical Shep fashion he'd had little luck in hiring in help. After the first couple of girls run off, no one would even consider working with him.

He realized he could be a descent guester, or an excellent baker, but not both. Not by a long shot.

Shep burst through the door that seperated the kitchen the common area. He saw three men standing waiting to be helped. If only these people would quit interrupting him.

Putting on his best fake smile he stepped toward the men.

"Why scribbler! Nice to see ya. You finally finish them letters? I surely would like to know where that . . . you know who . . . is at." Shep decided he didn't want to be blurting out names in front of people he didn't know.

"Now you, carrot top, what can I do for you?"

Red fought to control his temper. "Dont' be a fool by letting some country baffoon get the better of you on your first day in town," he said to himself.

"No one has called me carrot-top since I was old enough to hold a gun." He let the implication sink in.

"Name's Red O'Leary. I assume this is your place? Although it's always a shame when people have to take a job in a profession that they clearly don't have an aptitude for." Red wasn't sure if the large man followed everything he'd said, or if he picked up the blatent insult wrapped in his words.

"I'm new to town and since your's appears to be the only Inn of any kind, I'm here looking for a room. I expect to be staying on indefinitely, so I'd appreciate a private room. A clean one if you've got it."

Red didn't often dislike people immediately after meeting them, but he decided he'd make an exception in this case.

Avery was a bit taken aback by all the hubbub. The Ma'am was a man and the red referred to was not his red. "This pup?" he managed to squeeze in before the conversation got rolling. And, if they didn't break out into fisticufs, Avery'd be a Dutchman. "Oh, yes," he said to Shep thinking he had to give up the facad of his being the schreibner's assistant. "I've finished those letters. I've brought them for you to look over. The one with the flower petals ... er, you can feel them in the paper long as your fingers aren't all caloused up, is for ... well, you know who. Almost like sending flowers. Ahem ... and the other's just a business letter with R.S.V.P. at the end to get an answer one way or another." He held them out toward Shep. "About the fee, then, I'd gladly trade these for a meal here at the inn." Avery was famished having just bread and jam for the past few days and no money yet to buy a meal, however strange the company.

(Sorry. Role-Playing, writing, plotting, whatever you want to call it. And, by the way: She's a soldier and rather strong. Her hand wouldn't be slight.)

After she greeted the others a rather clumsy, slow seeming man burst out. She waited while he greeted the others, and then decided to wait until he completely finished with them. She remained silent, just watching and listening.

She loosened the pistol in her holster at the stirrings of a fight between the innkeeper and Red, but also lowered her hand into her pocket for her folding knife, since that would be less likely to be permanent.

Dear God in heaven, avery prayed to himself as the tension grew. He sidled a bit this way toward the woman as she reached for her gun, then her knife. He sidled back the other direction toward the two men, but the tension was such that you could cut it with a.... He started stepping slowly back away from the group. He'd heard this was a blessed place where guns just didn't shoot, but thought keeping out from between would serve him well.

Jean gave Avery what was meant to be a reassuring smile, which fortunately he couldn't see because it contained a great deal of rather... feral eagerness for a fight. She considered trying to play the peacemaker between the other two men, but decided that it would be safer to wait for Shep's response. Perhaps he wouldn't even notice the insults.

Avery thought he needed to back out quietly. Things were getting to be like a house full of sparing cats. The woman, even, smiled at him - on purpose. Avery pushed his blind-eyes glasses up the bridge of his nose. But, the letters, he couldn't leave just yet. Blast it, he thought, left my cane at home. Maybe he could sick pudgy little China on them to lick them to pieces if things got too hot and he got caught up in the middle of it all.

Shep had been in enough bar fights to see one shaping up. He scratched his chin to give him a moment to think. Now, Shep had nothing against a good bar fight, in fact he'd started a few of them hisself. 'Course, they was in a bar. He'd tried to keep up the Inn best he could since the other Bakers took off. Lord knew he wasn't a guester, but he'd put a lot of work, (for him) into it. And he wasn't too interested in seeing his common room busted up right now.

Of all the people in the room least likely to be the recipient of the first punch, he figured the scribbler's assistant was it. Taking two quick steps past the soldier and carrot-top he reached out and grabbed the scribbler's helpers hand.

"Why I'm right happy to see you. Can't imagine anyone'd get my ramblin thoughts all straightened out that quick." Shep gave a forced laugh which no one joined him in.

"Less just take a look at those letters." Turning to the others he said, "You gentleman will just have to 'cuse me. Official bid'ness you know." Looking at the towering redhead he added, "Last room on the right is free, " softly as he turned away, "carrots."

"Now, tell me again which of these is for Whiskey and which is for 'you know who?'"

Shep turned his back on the rest of the room but tensed himself waiting for a rush of feet or a blow.

Red realized the big man was trying to diffuse the situation. He started to relax as the baker directed him to his room, and then just at the end, there it was! Red balled his fist and took a half step toward the corner where the baker was in discussions with the blind man. Something in the tense of the man's shoulders stopped him. He was waiting for Red to take the first punch. He was expecting it even. Something about the setup wasn't right.

This wasn't how he had intended to make his entrance into Hatrack. He didn't yet know who held the power in Hatrack. Strange as it might seem, the clumsy oaf might even have friends. The blind man seemed friendly enough, if a little rattled at the tense situation.

No, now was not the time to lash out irrationally. "Bide your time Red. His time will come." He said to himself.

Red gave out a boistrous sincere sounding laugh. "If you cook as good as you talk, I'm going to grow fat and lazy staying here." It wasn't much of a joke, but it seemed to have the desired effect.

Turning to the soldier who had come to his aid? or to join in the fight? Red offered, "Let me drop my gear in my room and I'll buy you a drink at the pub I saw on my way in."

Jean grinned at the man, completely hiding her uneasiness at his behavior. I don't trust this guy, she thought. "Thanks for the offer," she said. "I think I'll take you up on that." But she didn't loosen her grip on the knife in her pocket. She had a bad feeling about this guy.

Avery thought this was not the time to cave in to himself. He sent out his doodlebug to see what he could see just as the Guester grabbed his hand. "Lord 'a mercy!" he blustered and ducked.

The guester took the letters. "Oh, heh-heh, them. Yes, sir." Avery was wound tighter than a German cuckoo clock fixing to strike the hour.

So was the other redhead who'd balled up a fist so as to knock the guester into next Sunday. China started yapping so she yapped herself into a backward motion. Avery hissed at her, and the big man backed off. "'S o.k. Missy," Avery said and she settled right down. "Good China dog."

The guester asked Avery which was which which put Avery in a bit of a bind. What's a blind man to say? He said, "Well, yes, sir," thinking quickly. "Ah," he reached out as the Guester held the letters out before himself.

Avery fumbled around for the letters as a blind man would and in the process touched the man's hands. He kept the fingertips of one hand lightly on the man's knuckles and thumb as he took his time feeling the two letters with the other. Every hair and freckle began to colour in from his knuckles, up his arm, to his shoulder. If he could keep contact for a little while, it would be just like looking at him with seeing eyes.

"This one," Avery said. "I can feel the flower petals in the paper, is for ... you-know-who, which makes the other for Mr. Whiskey." Avery let go. Fine, strapping arm, he thought, could dole out quite a punch.

Jean watched Avery give Shep the letters as Red went to his room with one slightly raised eyebrow. Now why, I wonder, would he want to hide whoever he's writing to? she thought. He doesn't seem like a bad guy, either of them, but I think I'll keep an eye on them both.

Love Ruth entered the inn, smoothing her skirts and keeping her head held high. After a moment, she spotted that loudmouthed Baker coming from the back room.

"Hey there, you ol Meanie." The girl marched right up to him, holding out her hand to shake as she was on official business.

"I heard you've been having some trouble keeping shop and cooking up good vittles all at a time. I've come to offer a reciprocal agreement, if you think you can uphold an honorbound arrangement and manage to keep from knocking my brother around." Love raised a brow. "Well? You interested?"

Jean stood beside Love. "Psst," she whispered out of the side of her mouth, too quiet for anyone but Love to hear. "Use small words. He seems to have trouble with anything longer than a syllable."

She grinned at the girl, who reminded her of herself at that age, only with a cleaner mouth and fewer muscles.

Oh, gee whiz. Now this little lady had come in to stirr up the pot. And, she and the soldier man/woman were in cahoots over something.

So, he said to Shep, "Seems you are getting so busy here just now, I think I'll come back later to clear up this business.

Love looked up at the man who had spoken and grinned. She liked this guy. "You may have a point," she said dryly. "He seems tongue-tied."

Turning back to Shep, she cleared her throat and began again, taking care to enunciate properly. "Master Baker. I work the General Store across the street. You remember me, I'm sure. Love Ruth. I noticed lately that you've been having extra business and I've smelt more than one batch of biscuits singe from neglect. I will let you hire on my brother. If you pay him fair and treat him fair, he'll work more than fair. And if you agree to let him work his massage business with the guests, I guarantee that folks will flock when they learn of Treasure Ruth's infamous--ahem--really good massages."

Shep watched the blind scribe make his way out of the increasingly crowded room.

Turning to lady in front of him Shep considered her offer. "I'm a fair employer. I expect a lot of my help, but not more than I'm willing to do myself." Well, at least what he'd do when he was their age, Shep thought to himself.

"You just send him around b'fore suppertime and I'll learn him what I need. I can't promise nothin bout that massage bizness. But, I'll listen to his ideas, I spose."

Shep fixed the soldier fella with his eye, "Don't mistake slow o' speech with slow o' mind. I've always found the best is advice to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. Even if you whisper."

"Now I got bakin to do."

Shep got a puzzled look on his face. "My what?" He scratched absently at his scraggly beard.

"Ain't never thought much about knacks and such. Most folks round here just do what comes natural to em. Iffin somebody can do something a mite better'n someone else, well, I guess we just figure that's the way things is."

"Don't knows that I've ever met someone with something call a 'knack.'" Shep paused for effect.

"Course, if it's serious condition we got a good doctor in town can clear it right up!" Shep laughed without checking to see if anyone laughed with him.

Love looked back and forth between the two men. She wasn't entirely sure what they were fighting about, but her business here seemed finished. "I'll send Trey around, then," she said, holding out her hand to shake on the deal.

Then she turned to the other guy. "Just who're you calling cocky?" Love looked the man up and down. "Perhaps you are just intimidated by strong women." She sighed dramatically before heading from the Inn and leaving them to their squabbling. "Men!"

Jean laughed uproariously at the girl's comment. She wasn't quite rolling on the floor, but she was red in the face and loud enough to drown everything else out. For the next few moments she noticed nothing.

After a little while she straightened up, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes and grinned at Shep. "I'll talk to you later. I might come back for a room here, but for now I'll be at the Pub. Maybe our new friend'll keep his 'free drink' promise." Still fighting explosions of mirth, she followed the girl out the door, her mirth barely subsiding before she arrived at the Pub.

The horses were so ornery--or tired, one--that they never made it to a pub. They pulled to a stop in front of the Inn, and Fargus took that as a sign. It wouldn't do to meet family looking so road-weary, anyway. He didn't see any stable-hands, so Fargus just tied up his horses, stretched, and headed inside.

It didn't look very busy. The place was almost empty, in fact, and Fargus didn't see anyone he would recognize as the guester. He walked to a central seat, beat the dust off of it, and settled back with his feet propped on a low table. He whistled an old field-hand tune, glancing about for a pitcher of water. Or brandy.

The horses clattered to a halt right outside the inn.
"Here we are, ma'am," said the driver, cheerfully, "Would you like some help with your bags?"
Bags? Still had only brought one small bag, and she wasn't about to let anyone else touch it. She smiled and shook her head. She paid the man and grabbed her bag, her shoes crunching on the road. The driver gave her a small, worried frown as he drove away.
Still streightened her dress and made an attempt at her hair as well. The ride had been long and tiring. The little-used roads were full of holes and hills, and Still ached all over. Her brown hair hung limply from her head, refusing to stay pinned under her hat.
She eyed the inn ruefully. She was so far from home. Still, she squared her shoulders, took a deep breath, and stepped through the door.

A few hours later, another coach stopped at the inn. The driver opened the door, and Sara stepped out on shakey legs. It had been a long time since the last stop, and night was falling. Sara knew that she wasn't likely to find a safer spot to stop for the night, yet she wondered if this was really an appropriate place for a young educated woman to stay. *Sigh* she didn't have much choice... She entered the inn and asked the keeper for either a private or women-only room.

Still saw the young woman come in. She was out late. She looked as though she needed company, and Still certainly did. She caught her before she had a chance to scuttle off to her room alone.

"Hello, I'm Still Baker." She introduced herself, "Would you like to come sit by the fire with me?"

Hearing the greeting, Sara looked up and saw another young woman motioning to her. It certainly had been a long lonely ride from the east, and Still seemed like a nice person. It would definitely feel good to have some companionship once again, especially in this strange town where she knew no one.

"Hi, I'm Sara Larner. Thank you for your kind invitation, I would greatly enjoy your company this evening." Sara settled down on the chair next to Still and allowed a little of her tension and nervousness drain away as Still's friendliness warmed the air. There was a pause as Sara sat down, and Sara decided to initiate conversation by asking Still to share a bit about herself.

"Me? Oh, I'm just a normal girl, I guess. I'm 17, a baker - though, judging by the smells coming from that kitchen, they've no need of bakers here." Still examined her hand, callused from hauling water and scrubbing kitchens, stronger than some from kneading. "I come from - farther east. I'm just hopping around from one place to another 'till I find one that suites me. But what about you? Are you traveling alone?"

Fargus glanced idly at the young ladies chatting near the fire. Place seemed awfully busy to have no Guester or even stable lad. Shrugging, he stood and walked to a large cabinet. After jimmying it just a bit, he found that much-needed brandy.

There were some dusty glasses--not crystal but nice enough. Fargus wiped them with his shirt tail a poured a couple fingerfulls. He sipped deeply, sighing at the warmth in his belly, and nodded to the women on his way back to his seat.

"Ya'll like a drink, misses?"

"No sir, but thank you for the offer," Sara replied in the politest of tones. She wondered to herself if it was common in this town for ladies to drink brandy... Back east, the more refined and educated ladies were starting to lay aside alcohol in most forms...

"Yes, I am traveling alone. I'm a bit of an old maid, you see." Sara smiled. "I know I don't look a day older than you do, but I have attained the ripe old age of 23. I was born in the east, but grew up in a town a couple of days journey west of here. When I was 15 my parents sent me back east to live with my grandparents and attend a finishing school. I have been teaching in small schools in the east since graduating. In spite of those years in the east, my heart has always been here in the west where unspoiled nature still exists. I also heard of the great need of good teachers out here, and decided that I would come back west to help the children here attain their full potential. My plan was to journey to my parent's home, and live there until I found a school where I could teach. My journey home brought me through the town of Hatrack, and since night was falling, I decided it would be safest to stop here rather than to risk arriving at another town after dark." Sara paused, thinking of what had transpired in the previous years... She had always talked with proper grammar--her mother made sure of that, but since moving to the east, she had picked up the refined manner of speech in the educated circles... She wondered if that might actually be a hinderance in communication out here...

Realizing that Still was at her side, she brought her consciousness back to the present and said "What do you think about helping me find my room, and then joining me for tea?"

Adelyne landed on the steps of the Inn she and her deceased husband had once been in charge of with her bags in hand. The rest of her belongings would be coming within the next month.

Hatrack still felt the same but she could also tell that there were many new faces in town. In fact, there were very few faces she remembered at all.

She managed somehow to get into the lobby area of the Inn and immediately felt the memories of her life here before come rushing back. She in the kitchen and tending the candy shop area while Obadiah would work the desk and try to overcharge the guests until she coughed in a disapproving tone to which he would finally relent.

She was not sure that Ben would be happy that she was back in Hatrack. She had just gotten tired of being in New Amsterdam, going to parties where women with too much time on their hands gossiped about people who were supposedly beneath them. It was in fact, during one of those same parties she loathed so much that a certain Mrs. Abershire made reference to how common her sons wife appeared to be. Adelyne excused herself for a moment and walked over to a serving table where she took up one of the custard pies and without hesitation walked back and planted it firmly in Mrs. Abershires face. "It's a COMMON known thing that Baker women stick up for each other. And its a COMMON known fact that my sons wife has more grace and compassion in her little finger than you have in your entire body, which I must mention, has enough mass to sink any ship in the harbour. And I will beg your pardon if I may sound arrogant for a moment, but my son and his wife have more money than every one of your families in this room and have often lent your husbands money to finance little adventures that have paid off handsomely with not a single thank you in return. So before you ever refer to my daughter in law as common again, let it be understood that it will be a common thing for Adelyne Baker to put a pie in your face and you would be quite lucky if I didn't plant a foot up your arse." With that said Adelyne gathered up her things, bid everyone good day and left the house.

She packed up and left for Hatrack the next day. After finally arriving in Hatrack her first desire was to go straight to her sons house and see her great granddaughter. But no, first things first. She intended to do something with herself instead of sitting in that house. And she thought that just maybe there might be a place for in the Inn. And if not perhaps a sweet shop or some other place would have her. Maybe she could start a place of her own in time. She put such thoughts aside for the time being. She would first see what was available to her here.

She dropped her bags on the floor and rang the bell at the desk.

Still shook her head at the brandy, but invited the man to sit with them as Sara began her story. She heard the high-born quality of Sara's speech, but it didn't bother her. She knew of some people in town who would immediately dislike her for that. Still had learned to speak like these rough people almost immediately after starting west. It just made things easier.

"Tea sounds lovely," she replied with a smile, "which room do you have?"

Sara showed Still her key and said "The room is just up the stairs, second door on the right. It shouldn't take too long for me to take my few bags up there and get some order to my things. Shall we take tea in private, or down in the main eating room?"

Sara headed up to her room and began unpacking a few necessary items. Suddenly she heard a knock on the door. A young boy stood there with something in his hand. "Miss Larner?" he asked. "I have a message for you. It's from the school board." So the Hatrack school board had received her application and the notification that she was in town! Sara excitedly took the letter and gave the boy a penny for his trouble. She read:

Dear Miss Larner,

We have received your application and have decided that you seem to be qualified for the teaching position at the Hatrack School. We would like you to meet us for an interview at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Chairman of the School Board.

This was incredible. She had sent applications to the school boards in all the towns in this area, but out of all of them, the one that responded was this one! The only one of these towns on her route home!

She sat down and wrote a letter to her family.

Dear Mother and Father,

While on my way home, I received a response from the school board in Hatrack, the town in which I stopped to rest. The school board requests an interview at my earliest convenience, and therefore I plan to stay in this town for a few days at least.

Give everyone my love. If I am hired by the school board I will try to come home for a visit before school starts...

Your loving daughter,

Sara

Once that was finished, she wrote a letter to the school board, advising them that she would be available for interview the next day. She sealed the letters, and then went downstairs. She found the little boy who brought her the letter still hanging around, so she sent him off with her letters, and then went and joined Still for tea.

Leo wandered around hatrack and finally came upon the Inn, a big open looking building, and he invited himself in for a good look see. Ooh, yum. The smells were delightful. Food was cooking in there somewhere. It had been a good long couple days since he'd been in Caterina's kitchen. But, there were also no end to the people milling about. The moment he thought he was alone, there'd come another. For now, he'd be off, but the prospect of food was definitely inviting.

Juan waited, crouched outside the Inn, for Leo to leave, then stepped out in front of him as he came down the steps and grabbed his arm. "Going somewhere?" he asked.

Stopping in front of the inn, Aidan paused. She had a purse full of coins yet, and could do with a nice bath and good night's sleep. "One night can't hurt, can it?" she said to herself. With her mind now made up, she walked up the steps and gently opened the door to the inn, quietly passing the two already on the porch.

Juan jumped in surprise as the girl walked past. Damn. How did he miss her? But stayed focused on Leo.

Aidan spun lightly around at the sound of a small voice. Looking down, she saw an endearing little face, and smiled. "Why, thank you. I wasn't even aware I'd dropped anything." Aidan then bent down so she was eye-level with the lad, and held out her hand for a shake. "My name is Aidan, what's yours?"

Leo tried to extend his hand, but Joshua still had a tight hold of his arm. He looked up at him pleadingly, and then back at the lady with his most courteous smile. If there was one useful thing he did learn on the plantation, it was how to be proper. Heaven knows, Mastuh Jackson introduced him to enough young ladies he'd brough home and then swept quickly away to behind the closed doors of the drawing room.

Leo bowed, an arm across his middle where he bent - not too fast, not like an acorn falling but more like a leaf on a windless day, then up again. He smiled. "Misses, my name's Leonardo Amaro Duarte, 'cept, mos' folks calls me Leo, which I'd be happy to have you call me." He smiled up at her bright as the sun itself, cheery as the full moon at night, sparkling as the stars in the night sky. He tugged on his arm. "I seen it roll to jes' over there. I'd be ever so glad to git it fer you." He leaned away from Juan as far as he could lean. "May I go 'n git it? It's jes over there."
