After all, it is his board. I would suppose he drops by whenever he's thinking about writing another Alvin story to see if Alvin is generating enough interest or any interesting ideas. |
|
*Elanor* Member |
Maybe . . . but we don't really use anything from the Alvin stories. All we use is the town's name, the time it's in, and the idea of characters having knacks. Although, maybe he could get inspiration from some of the characters we've created . . . hmm, interesting thought. *goes off to ponder some more* |
|
Lynch Member |
Actually, that's already been done. Most of the characters in Alvin Journeyman were the people that started this whole Hatrack web-thingie back in the AOL chat-room days. I think Uncle Orson explained that in the forward of the book, but I can't remember now. I do remember being disappointed I didn't make it into the book... Ancient history, |

Unless I'm mistaken, the only person to move from screen to page was Vilate Franker, the cantankerous busybody who ran the post office. You sent a letter, garunteed it would be steamed open and read. She was a hoot. |
|
*Elanor* Member |
*sigh* how great would that be, to have a character end up in one of his books! But, out of curiousity . . . how did the nickname Uncle Orson start? By the way, are there still forum related AOL chats going on?

AOL used to host Hatrack River as a destination (Keyword Hatrack). OSC was also the founder of a private Mormon group site on AOL that AOL wanted to take public and offer as an option. OSC felt that the group deserved its privacy and pulled both that site and the Hatrack site from AOL whe they couldnt agree on the terms. It moved to another site (which is partially archived here) and eventually to this much better and user friendly site, where you read this today. All of the AOL writings were lost, I believe, save for some stuff that a guy under the handle of Taleswapper (a moderator, I think) removed before the closing of the AOL site. He got in trouble, but the writings he took never surfaced again. Anyone have more info? |
|
Marie-Claire Delacroix Member |
The only info I have is that Chris is right about Alvin Journeyman. There is an explanation (at least in the edition I have) that a host of the exciting and unusually knack-ridden townsfolk our hero runs into are based on characters from the original board. |
|
Bradley Vape Member |
I wrote on the originaI board and really think it was just Vilate Franker that made an appearance on both and not a host of characters from the original board. Any other oldtimers remeber this or am I nuts? Mindy? Andrew? West? Anyone? Anyone/ Bueller? Bueller? OSC had the option to write under the Horace Guester character but seldom did. His sister was more hands on in town. |

I think Mr. Card wanted to write our dear Scarlet in his books....but didn't know how...the poor guy...tee hee hee. I remember the old AOL boards and I think Ryan is right about Vilate being the only one to go to page....so much for good taste, although....Orson did e-mail me once and said he did in fact exsist (I bluffed him out of his silence to prove it to me.) And I made him say that he liked my writing too. tee hee hee....I'm sooooooo very bad...lol -Maria |

I could be mistaken (it's been many years, and I've slept since then), but I believe that at least half of the "witnesses" to the plow were in fact based on characters in the chatroom. What I do know for certain is what was written in the forward (except for Melissa Wunderly, I think most folk who write here know this much): Kat Kidd was Goody Trader, Uncle Orson was Horace Guester, the two of them created Vilate Franker, then Melissa Wunderly portrayed Vilate first-hand in the community. Wish I remember more of those chats. They weren't nearly as lively as some of our own Tuesday nighters, but they were always more packed. And, of course, Uncle Orson actually showed up to those chats. -C Lynch |

Did the website come before the first book? That would be the only way web characters could have been there, right? |

I just thought of something after posting (in the Pub.) I figured I might want to add another dimension to this ongoing story, but if you want Israel to stay the hell out of it, somebody can go ahead and scare him off (I'll think of something if I have to.) Sorry I went ahead and posted BEFORE mentioning this. |

About the old forum- thanks for the info! I wish I were there, back in the day. *sigh* |

Hmm....how do I make Ahavah interesting enough to show up in one of the books.... |

Scarlet Malory Member |
Israel...come on in and play at the pub...I'm just a bit unsure as to where your character is right now. Is he outside Scarlet's bedroom window?...ahhhhhh...you better watch out, if her brothers catch you there, you're in for a long fall. (They don't like boys around their sister.) tee hee hee. -Maria |

I could ask the same about Emma! But is OSC writing another Alvin book? I was under the impression that they were finished. Unless he started a . . . unless he wrote another book, but about us, the citizens of Hatrack. Now that would make for an interesting novel, don't you think? Sort of a modern Canterbury Tales, like the lot of us go on an adventure, and tell each other stories. I could see him doing that, and he could borrow our personalities . . . that would be a good way for all of us to get into one of his books! Woohooo, I'm hyper . . .

I am thinking that the last book was turning more toward modern Mormanism than might be good for the series. I think it would be hard to support Morman doctrine and the receiving of the books in a story about knackery and early American mysticism. I was first attracted to the stories because of the development of the Early American Folklore (and because so much of it takes place in my parallel present day Indiana). So, I think Alvin, like Bilbo, has to go and be replaced by, as suggested, new Hatrack characters. N'est ce pas? |
|
IsraelWatcher Member |
Yeah, he's on a ledge outside the window listening and smirking to himself. Thanks to his dastardly little knack, though, people just don't notice him. Hopefully, none of the Malory boys are super-observant like Ahavah; transformation into a Watcher Pancake is not one of Israel's life goals. |

Brad: hatrack.com wasn't created until after Alvin Journeyman was published, but before Heartfires. Before hatrack.com, we met at AOL keyword: Hatrack where we had a forum, some info (not alot, but some) on Uncle Orson and his works, and the chat room. The forum was created as a branching out of the weekly chats, which Uncle Orson frequented. In those chats we started to roleplay a character of our own creation who lived in Hatrack River, Hio. Not sure who the first person was that started this, but I seem to recall it started a week that Uncle Orson wasn't in attendance, because we were talking about what he would think if we did it while he was there. Fortunately, he liked the idea, and began roleplaying the part of Horace Guester. Before AOL, we met on GEnie, but I wasn't in attendance for any of those. So to answer your question: no, there are no characters from the online community in the first three books or Heartfire, only in Alvin Journeyman, which takes place in Hatrack River. Ela: Yes, OSC plans to write another Alvin book. There was supposed to be two more books in the series, but the last I heard they were to be combined in a single volume entitled The Crystal City. -CLynch |

All the books draw from the Mormon religion, that's really the point. How about create fascinating characters who do more than eat and greet each other and give OSC a REASON to want to base a character on you? Vilate was a crabby loudmouth who was colorful and full of life. She was wonderfully realized and that may be one reason OSC sat up and paid attention. She also researched the period thoroughly and used a spell check when she posted. Now, I don't mean to be grouchy, and I don't claim to be any better than the things I just said, but then I don't hope that Uncle Orson will choose my character for his next book. If and it's a BIG if anyone would appear, I suspect it would be Lady Hampton. Ever read the posts at the theatre? Its a good lesson as what great character development and storytelling ability can do on a site like this. She doesnt need anyone to interact with, and not too much happens, but it is consistantly the best writing on this site. And West, I'll drop by the cellblock later today to get my check for saying all those things... |

On a side note, I've been away since... well, most of the year. Maybe someone will be kind enough to bring me up to speed until I have a chance to go back and catch up on all the posts. I sure miss the weekly paper... Once I'm up to speed again I'll be coming into town, until then, feel free to stop by the White's place. CLynch |

Well, Lynch, let's see ... um, - well, honestly, one can go for months here with nothing much at all happening. The most exciting thing in recent memory I recall is you in a mini skirt. Anyway, if Hatrack is about Mormon, why are there no Mormon in it? I think there have been Presbyterians and Baptists but - heck, not even a polygamist. What has knackery to do with Mormon? Doesn't that kind of fall in the realm of the occult? As they say - curiosity killed the cat and satisfaction brought him back. |
|
Bradley Vape Member |
It's not ABOUT mormons, you goof, and watch what you say about polygamists - if you knew anything about the religion you'd know it's an outdated stereotype, my man. |
|
Lynch Member |
I looked good in that skirt! It's not about mormonism, per se. It loosely follows the story of Smith, who was told by an angel where the plates were located from which the Book of Mormon was translated from. I always figured the Crystal City was a formation of Zion ("...this city was built many times in the past. I think it will be built again.") It was in the Seeing Place on Lake Mizogan (a celestial vision of sorts) that Alvin determined that his mission was to build the city, just as the real Smith thought it his mission to build Zion. Whether Uncle Orson's version of Smith actually succeeds is something I've wondered about. A tangent here: supposedly Alvin Smith is going to die in Carthage City after being imprisoned there. I wonder, is this going to happen before or after the Crystal City is built? I personally think it's not going to be Alvin Smith at all that builds the city, but those he teaches, who go west and build the city after his execution. Or maybe he survives the execution. Who knows where this is going to go... if it ever gets written. C Lynch |

Hehe- I like that: curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back. But, hm. OSC is supposed to be working on the Ender's Game screen play at the moment, so I find it hard to believe that he's working on two things at the same time. Unless he's superhuman, which of course, is entirely possible |
|
Apeconit Member |
If, as has been suggested, Mormon is integral to the Alvin stories (I'm going to get my character charter revoked for this, aren't I?), and Alvin Smith is a metaphor for or fictionalized version of Joseph Smith, then it would follow that the original 1830 Smith "The Book of Mormon" and "Doctrine and Covenants" will figure preeminently; to wit, polygamy is an ordained practice and people of African ancestry are not granted full access to Mormon priesthood and privilege until 1978. The two year missionary commitment and door-to-door proselytizing make the town of Hatrack an even more interesting place, though. The people of Hatrack, then, become the ones who will carry out the salvation of the world, or in the case of some of its characters, subvert said salvation. I still find the parallel's between the real Smith and Mormon and the fictional Smith and knackery odd - not to mention Lynch's short skirt. |
|
IsraelWatcher Member |
I dunno about the books following the factualized Mormon story. It looks more to me like a story of what the Mormons were trying to accomplish, and what, perhaps, could have been - a powerful and beneficial religious group, as opposed to an evangelistic joke. Short skirt? Never mind, I don't think I want to know. |
|
Lynch Member |
As I said, it's based loosely. I think your right that the fictional version is much more romantic (idealized?). What gives it away, even for those only vaguely familiar with the LDS church and not at all with the founding of the church or the life of Smith, is the ideal of the Crystal City. It's basically the ideal society on earth, be it called The Crystal City, Zion, Communism, or whatever name you want to give it. Unfortunately, the only times I've heard about or read about the ideal ever being realized is in fiction. But, as long as we can still have our dreams, there's a chance those dreams can become reality. -C Lynch |

For the record, I first posted in AOL's Hatrack in 1994. When I knew the end of the AOL connection was imminent in 1996, and having created three or four regular characters, I printed out a huge amount of what I posted, So there's at least something from that time. Vilate was a favorite nemesis of my primary character, Lady Hampton, and I miss the verbal venom (and one major physical brawl) those two had ongoing. There was also a weekly often-in-character chat forum that I wish was transcribed. I was absent in '97 & '98, but returned once I had a new (and more powerful) computer! westegg, gosh it's been a long time. Just to reiterate what others have said regarding Alvin Journeyman, there were characters other than Vilate Franker who made brief appearances. I was fortunate in that Scott chose to have Arthur Stewart tell Alvin (during a visit to the jail cell) that John Binder had said that no rope of his would ever hang a maker (or something like that). And, wonder of wonders, Scott also had John Binder play a minor role in helping Alvin and Peggy make their escape. I've forgotten more than I remember about the AOL chats. They were tremendous fun. As I recall we alternated in character chats with "normal" chats every other week. Wit was present in abundance. "Then I was young and unafraid" you might say. The very first post of mine that I have a record of is from June 7th, 1994 (http://members.aol.com/~johnbinder/binder/jb01.txt). http://members.aol.com/~johnbinder/jb.htm has a few of what I once considered to be my "good" posts. Maybe a couple of them are actually any good. Somewhere, somehow it would be awesome to find an archive of all the old AOL stuff. Once upon a time I had some of the chat transcripts but I think they are gone now. John Hansen |

Goodness! And here I thought all was lost from those good ol' days. '94? That was before Journeyman, wasn't it? When I got more time, I'll have to read over those. Just barely had time to glance at a couple of 'em. I've forgot most of the stories from those days, but if I'm not mistaken, Binder was courting Vilate for a time. Can't recall what came of it, though. Anyway, good to see you John. I just came across about 30 floppies or so that were stuffed into the case I keep my notebook computer in. I bought that computer back in '95, so there may be something there. Maybe if the computer itself isn't too corrupted, I'll be able to retrieve some of my old posts off the hard drive. Here's to memories and old friends, cheers, |

Hi, all. I thought I'd just let you know that I'll have to be leaving Hatrack for a while. I've really enjoyed posting here, but I just don't have enough time to devote to it. Thanks for the fun, and hopefully I'll come back again in the future. Amanda |

LOL..Lynch..You crack me up!! You just love controversy don't you my friend. It stinks that I missed you on your trip through. I kept expecting a phone call from you on Sunday evening/Monday morning....but you go off and head back a day later and call me while I have my phone on silent while I sleep. We'll catch up with each other eventually. I look forward to seeing how things develop with your latest arrival in Hatrack. It's always interesting. Ben |

Motherbird Black... are you out there? Last I saw, you'd gotten in my Daddy's wagon with Mom and Harriet. Did you go to sleep back there? Did you disappear? If I don't hear from you soon, Jane's going to look back where you sat and find only a glossy black feather and one blue bead.... ? |

Ben, you expect me to follow the rules? Never! Life would get too boring. We will absitively, posilutely have to plan better the next time I pass through. It was a hectic week for me all around, but a much needed vacation anyway. Stay Sane, |

Sorry Jane, Work has been a horrible mess with our skeleton crew getting cut in half and the upper pantheon expecting us to do the same amount of work. I'll try to get something posted by tomorrow morning, but no promises. If I take too long, feel free to 'find' that Bird has flown the coop and I'll figure out a way to write in a follow-up to it. Again, many apologies. See you in town, |

Ohhhh... Skellington crews getting cut in half in October? Sounds gruesome. No, sounds like a horror movie. I'd advise you not to go to work without a silver cross and a water pistol loaded with holy water at the LEAST! Take a buddy to the bathroom on breaks. If s/he comes out of his/her stall with glowing green eyes, DON'T ask if s/he feels ok, just RUN. Seriously - take care of yourself, take your anti-stress vitamins, and make sure your boss's boss NEVER sees the top of your desk. End all e-mails or conversations to the upper echelons with 'oops, there goes the phone again' or 'I'd better get back to the Johnson report' or something else that sounds terribly busy. Jane's heading off to the covered bridge to wait for the third wagon ... she could see you slipping off and exchange shy waves, if you'd like. |

Hmm, hunting we is. Spiders! The powerful venom of the black with red, beautiful she is, and evil she brings. Widowed many times over, and always looking for another hapless male. Wicked webs we weave, hmm? Posted reply, both alliterate and bordering on illiterate, but it is done, and what a treat it is for me. Must go now. Nice warm comforter begs for attention, and I shan't disappoint... heehee, must remember the water gun tomorrow. who needs holy water? i just want to start a war! In chaos, only the chaotic and the insane thrive! -MB |

Hmm. Motherbird, if you're searching for venomous spiders with a "devious grin" on your face, I'm not sure I want you in my barn! lol *thinking about this* |
|
Motherbird Black Member |
Are there spiders in the barn? |
|
Jane Member |
A barn that's been vacant for two years? Probably a web in every corner and grandaddy longlegs dancing on every rafter! If you're just hungry, no problem, eat as many of them as you wish. If you want a pet, though... keep the venomous ones away from my children! lol It's the devious bit that has me worried. *slipping a barlow knife in Jane's pocket* |

I feel like I'm writing to myself... like Hatrack is a ghost town. I wish I'd been around when more people were writing. Does it pick up, come winter? How can I register my kids for school when a teacher hasn't posted for a year? |

Marie-Claire Delacroix Member |
As the erstwhile schoolteacher, I apologize for my tardiness and will hastily put something into the school files for you! But also, realize that as a resident of Hatrack Township, your taxes pay for schooling, and there isn't anything like the complicated registration processes we have nowadays! |

Emma, Emma, Emma. Snakecharmer? Such a nasty thing to say about a poor immigrant who wanted nothing more than a bowl of soup and a glass of clean water. You have wound me; honestly you have... :) Jeff, Philippe, whoever you are, lead on noble trickster, to the cafe, or whatever nefarious location you deem appropriate. Fear not, sneaky fiend, I shall find you. You will not be able to shake your newly acquired fan(atic) easily, I assure you. C Lynch |

Hehe . . . maybe I should have Emma wear a sign around her neck that says, "Beware! Do not ignite this woman's wrath against you! She will go to no end to cause your ruin!" She's very determined, I tell you, very determined . . . and stubborn. After all, your poor dear immigrant lady did hint at her being a child torturer . . . an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Nothing beats namecalling, especially between two egotistical, hotheaded, scheming young women ![]() Oh, by the way, Jane- I've been here on an and off for a year, and it's always quiet. But if you want excitement, join the Battle School forum- people don't necessarily post more than they do here, but there are more people there, and something's always happening. If you're interested I can lend you one of my screennames, perhaps. [This message has been edited by *Elanor* (edited November 24, 2002).] |

I've peeked in over there, but never posted, cause I wasn't sure where to start. I saw something about having to ask if you could join an army - but do you have to be a launchie first for a month or something? Maybe after the holidays I'll take you up on the offer of a name over there... till then I'll just enjoy the relaxed 'post when you have time' ambiance over here. Thanks, though! I wasn't sure if the terminology back then was pennies or cents or... coppers or pence sounds kind of English. What should Jane have had in her little drawstring bag? any clue? |
|
*Elanor* Member |
Those used to be the rules, that you had to be a launchie before you joined an army. But, as there are no launches active now, I think you can join an army straightaway. However, you do need a lot of experience before you start an army, and I don't think new armies are welcomed now anyway. They have a shortage of members as it is. As for money . . . didn't they use shillings and such? Shillings, pence, I think they would have used cents, also. But for lack of a better term, you can just use 'coins' and nobody will mind [This message has been edited by *Elanor* (edited November 25, 2002).] |

Lynch, you may call me Jeff if you would like, but not nefarious. In any case, neither my character nor I knows where to go. I see the pub is open again. But I remember there was another salle a manger in town somewhere that I don't see now. However, since neither place is active now, it may be rather ineffectual to show up there in order to acquire a good meal. Also with a husband looming on the outskirts, what are the prospects of an affaire d'amour between our amourous two? Is there pied-a-terre for them, or is the husband to return and kill my character in the process ... pardonnez-moi, such process must be kept to PG-13, so how much can a couple like ours accomplish? My character is stuck in town for the winter at least, though. Hmmm, room service? Oh, I forgot - PG-13.
