Meh . . . and if you stay at the inn, my Emma will do all she can to prevent an affair with her sly, womanly, 'yin' ways. As I've been here for barely a year, I don't know how these things work. But I was wondering, does anyone else think it's time for a new Inn? It's 13 pages long already . . . I mean, it's not a problem, but for some reason seeing all those numbers listed out irritates me. I do realize that it might not be necessary anyway, as there are about four active members here right now. [This message has been edited by *Elanor* (edited November 26, 2002).]

Hmm... I count five: Myself, Jeff, Emma, Jane, and Miss Margit. ;) Oh, and Wendy's been posting for the little firestarter over at the Doc's, which brings the count up to six.Jeff, I'm probably not the best person to give advice on how to stay within the PG-13 bounds. I write what I want to write, which usually tends to stay within the ratings. I've never been asked to edit a post, anyway. That could change in the near future if certain events take place that I've heard hints about. (Don't hit me, please...) I'll send an email with a proposed outline of possible outcomes of our collaboration later this week. For the record, I've done the "romance-novel-adultery-thing" in a short story. I didn't like it. It turns out that most people that read it like the way I write the scenario, but I feel it's a been-there/done-that event. Only so many ways to make an adulteress interesting. Long way of saying, that while I'm not above putting my poor characters through the motions, I have no desire to write the scene. Should make our moderators happy. As for Shen coming back to murder the shapeshifter, not to worry. While he has no qualms about the deed in and of itself, he's on his last leg (sorry for the pun) and without the use of firearms, I don't see him able to pull the deed off. -C Lynch

Miss Scarlet, Is there a problem with our characters being about 13 and 16? Will we have to go to the P.O. first for fake I.D.'s? Perhaps I'll just invite my pretty little jewl over there and see what happens.

Not a problem at all, Jeff. My pub is for eats too. If it was just for drinkin' and ...other bad stuff, I'd have named it a bar or a saloon....(sheesh, what's a character gotta do around here to get a little action...lol).-Maria/Scarlet ps.Lynch, you are still in the dog house

LOLLOLOLO....ahem...aaahhhh...yea...well... that action was ALL the way back in October for cryin' out loud. I believe once every two months is NOT nearly enough..tee hee hee. On a cleaner thought, I don't think you kids will interupt what's going on in the kitchen. I haven't seen a post from Brad for months, so I'm not even sure if he and Scarlet are even really still in the kitchen together...I think I'm in there myself. Now I'll have to write myself out of it. Sheesh...I hate when writers get cold feet and leave poor, dear Scarlet panting....hehehehe. Not a man alive that can handle that girl !!!! Maria/Scarlet

Maria already has me in the dog house, so what can I say? Charmeine has barely come of the age to produce milk, so it may not be wise to to curdle the ubiquitous one's milk. Philippe is the one that proclaimed himself to be inferior to Charmeine to the kind hostess, so I would hardly be surprised at any turn of events at this point.

An Alvin movie? Didn't I hear a song from the soundtrack of that just this morning?Okay, Simon?" Simon: "Okay!" Dave: "Okay, Theodore?" Theodore: "Okay!" Dave: "Okay, Alvin? Alvin? ALVIN!!!" Alvin: "OKAY!!!" quote: Christmas, Christmas time is near, Time for toys and time for cheer. We've been good, but we can't last. Hurry, Christmas, hurry fast! Want a plane that loops the loop. Cute, Jane, but I don't think that was the "Alvin movie" she was asking about.Seriously, I don't think there are any plans for one. Uncle Orson is working on the Ender's Game movie, which finally! has a studio backing it. I'd like to see it made, but I have a personal preference for the Alvin Maker series over the Bugger series. My worst fear with the Ender movie is that the plans are heading toward a series following the "Shadow" books. While this isn't entirely a bad thing, the original series (Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide) were much more powerful and spoke of serious issues surrounding humanity, particulary bigotry and genocide (or any other -cide). Especially in this post WTC environment, I think the messages in Speaker and Xenocide are more pertinent. Although the latest Shadow books deal with this message in a more modern setting, I think this is the very reason why they won't come over as well. Particularly the critics will bash the movie for trying to sell the "message" instead of the "story." Anyway, didn't mean to rant, but as far as I know, there are no plans for an Alvin Maker movie any time soon.

I hate double posting, but the stupid security feature (for whatever reason) won't let me edit my previous post. Ah, well.I had a little free time so caught up with the storyline from where I (thought I) had written myself out of the story. Should have known it wouldn't be that easy in Hatrack. I got a disturbing glimmer of pride that my Ice Princess (?) had left the poor doppleganger conflicted. Jeff, where do you see this storyline leading? I'll have a couple days per week max to post, but I tend to check my email from work on a quasi-regular basis. Send suggestions my way, and I'll reply with suggestions from my end. Be warned, the Ice Princess isn't going to be too happy about being snubbed for an older, white woman. She may just jump the shapechanger (in a good way) to prove to herself that she's desirable... could be interesting to write the unpredicatble aftermath of something like that. Good thing her husband's a cripple. -C

Two things:Rant about general OOC: if you are finding yourself constantly using OOC in a post, use the OOC folders. It's hard enough to watch a story unfold when you only get a handfull of sentences a day. It's harded still when you have to skip over just as many OOC comments. To Jana: Don't worry about a character getting frozen. Each folder acts as it's own environment. I recall only two instances when every folder (about two dozen at the time IIRC) was aligned to the same story, The Fire (a few years ago) and The Fair (about a year after the forums switched to The Big Lion). It can be storming in one folder, and sunny in another. Jana can be talking (or 'frozen') at the inn, be talking to someone on main street, and having dinner at someone's house on the same RL day, though they may be weeks apart in Hatrack.

Hate to be a nag, but local jails aren't likely to be used for long term holding. That's what state prisons were for. Also, rape was a hanging offense in the nineteenth century. Depending on what the theft was for, public display/punishment would be the most common sentence. The idea of long term sentencing (ie for years) is a modern idea. If you were sentenced to long term you were likely being rehabilitated which basically meant being treated like shit if you were lucky enough to be considered sane. The 'insane' had it much worse. -C

Hey everyone.Life has jumped out and bit me on the ass. Between my regular job, my part-time computer repair, programming, pre-med classes, and rock climbing I just haven't time to post in a timely manner on a consistent basis. Posting activity is picking up, and I hate to leave now, but for now I haven't even time to step back to lurker status. To all of you I've written with over the years, thank you for the experience. I've learned more from you guys than I'd ever dreamed possible, and you all know I'm not just talking about writing. I'd list everyone, but I'm sure to leave someone out. You all know who you are. So, this is the third, and probably the last time I say goodbye. The lessons I've learned here I'll remember forever, and I hope everyone finds their dream, whatever it may be. My AIM is buried in the contact folder. Feel free to send me a page whenever I'm on. Keep in contact so I don't have to miss you guys too much. Love you all. Sláinte, Chris Lynch For reference to the newer folk, so you don't wait for a response from me, I write the following characters: Shen Brack Conner, Charmeine Conner, Ariel White (owner of the general store), Thomas White, Louise White, Prentice Birley, and Motherbird Black. If there's a reponse waiting, I request you write me out of the thread. Do whatever you want to 'em, I suppose. I ain't going to be here to say anything to the contrary.

That Hatrack 1830's Forum is a place for fans of Orson Scott Card's alternate America stories (Seventh Son, Prentice Alvin, etc.) to try their hand at writing fiction in the same style and along the same themes. Anyone is welcome to join in, but there are some basic (common courtesy) rules that players must abide by.For a look at these, as well as some helpful hints about how to research the alternate America, or what to write about, check out the Hatrack River 1830's Guidelines discussion folder in this same section of the board! do all of the topics such as smithy and the pub have to intermingle realistically or can different topics be different times or even different stories?

posted October 15, 2003 07:36 PM
I'm a little confused, but will answer as best I can.Ideally, each discussion topic (Smithy, Main Street, Pub) is meant to be a location. If the world were perfect, all the topics in each discussion would make perfect sense and fall in chronological order that somehow matched with the rest of the discussions in the rest of the folders. That doesn't happen. The fluidity of "Hatrack Time" is pretty famous. Because some people post once a day and some people post once a week and some people post once a month, there is no way to make everyone keep to the same schedule. Therefore, if you're a fast and frequent poster, your character might have stories brewing in several discussions at the same time. If someone were to draw out a timeline of Hatrack events, these stories would be taking place days, hours, or even months apart, but as the author, you could write them at the same time. What is considered polite here at Hatrack is to treat the discussion topic locations as consistantly as one can, and (of course) to stay true to 1830's history. So if at all possible, avoid posting stories about Ice Skating in the Pub, and avoid posting stories about robot alien hunters from space in anything but the Out of Character Topic. Hope this helps!

You can post under whatever user name you choose. Some people prefer to have one name for all their postings, and some prefer to post with a user name for each character.Go with your own preference! Just remember to include your e-mail address with your user name or names (the way you have as hatrack yan). The reason is so that other posters can contact you if they have questions about your post, or want to your help in working out future plot lines! Enjoy posting! I look forward to seeing you around "town!"

Begin with the General Guidelines discussion here in the OOC folder. You can find the answer to all sorts of questions like:What is Hatrack? What kind of characters are appropriate? What is a knack? What should I write about? If you'd like more specific information, feel free to e-mail me and I'd be happy to help you out. Welcome!

I don't have time to resume posting just yet. I had my baby. She's the prettiest little girl I've ever laid eyes on. She's also a HANDFUL! And I've had to go back to work full time. Egads! It kills mine heart. Anyway, I don't know how well I'm remembered, since I wasn't actually here for very long. But I've just finished The Crystal City and I missed this place. I'll be lurking for a while, until I get the time to post. I would also like to reread the series one or two more times before I devote myself back to hatrack fulltime. So thought I'd drop a line. I'll be around. Ciao! Amanda

It would be my pleasure. I could take to posting now, if no one minds the fact that I usually only get one day a week to get to a computer. I've found that most boards keep a certain pace, so I'd hate to slow things down. But I figured while I wait, I'll be better 'researching' my character. Starting with reading the books over! And learning a bit o cherokee lore.Anyways, glad someone missed me! § A §
