From everything I've read on the subject, Scarlet is not only the most attractive person in Hatrack, but also the most scandalously flirtatious! I'm not sure how she would hold her title against a certain actress who used to live in town, but I bet it would be a run for the money!

I liked the idea of your Bounty hunter...but I just wish he said more, but then again, I wish everyone would say more...lololol.

I do believe ,also ,that if the great Lady Hampton were to wisk back into town , Scarlet would have a run for her money..lolol

As per your request, Scarlet's description:

Height- 5 foot 2 inches
Hair-Long black hair
Eyes-Ebony
Weight-115 pounds
Skin tone-Olive

-Very curvey in all the right places(if ya
know what I mean...ehemmm.)
-Very bright white smile
-She is as temperous as she is beautiful.
-The youngest of six children
-5 older brothers
-She is also highly into fashion
-Her mother died giving birth to her and so she was raised by her father and five brothers. This fact lends to the reasoning that she is a little rough around the edges : She swears, drinks, does heavy work if she thinks she can and... she always thinks that she can.

I've been re-reading the series and trying to do some research on my characters. I'm just waiting for The Crystal City to get back to the library, and then I'll be able to put together the profiles for my new characters. Can't wait!

At any rate, as I've been doing my reading, I've been wondering about what date it is here in Virtual Hatrack. So far I know it's winter and a Saturday. Hatrack 18 *30s* , I know, but which year exactly is it?

That's all I was wondering for now. That, and where is everyone? hee hee

Ciao,

I think that traditionally (very likely by the express wish of Mr. Card himself) the Hatrack 1830's board is just that. Always Hatrack (except in the rare occasion when someone posts a specifically foreign topic) and always 1830-ish.

Time doesn't march onwards here, and the town isn't tied closely enough to history to notice particularly whether a certain event has happened yet or is about to happen. It's been generally up to the individual authors as to whether their characters age, grow-up, or even notice the passage of years that don't really affect the calendar in any way.

Maybe this means you can't make a meaningful reference to finding the new 1832 penny on the street, but there are plenty of benefits that more than make up the difference. For instance, if you decide that it's absolutely necessary for your story to discuss something that wasn't invented until the end of the decade -- go on ahead. Anything within those ten years is surely fair game.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Tansy!

I guess I was also wondering if this meant we could reference things that happened in Crystal City, but I know there's a time lapse of some sort. Would that be a no, then?

That's a most definite no. We're not allowed to reference anything that happens in any of the novels because they are protected by copyright and we want to honor and respect those rights.

History is fair game, but it's wisest just to believe that the people and events of the series are beyond our ken.

Right...but people talk about the Tippy-Canoe thing and not being able to go west. That's part of the universe. Is that wrong to reference, because that's part of Ahavah's past (as I've created her). So we can't talk about the slaves getting set free? Or the mexican volcano? I'm not talking about aquaintances with individual characters, just 'news' of what's happened in the stories.

Thanks,

Hi all,

Just a question/comment. Is this site just not very active anymore? I've read through a lot of the old stuff, and it seemed to be a pretty happenin' place. Are people just busy, uninterested, what? Admittedly, I do have a lot of time on my hands right now so I'm able to check and post often, but I was just wondering if everything is always this quiet. Don't get me wrong, I love this site and have really enjoyed all of the wonderful writing and characters on it. It just appears to have a very different vibe now than the one I get from reading some of the older stuff. Now, off to do some research since I'm the potter but don't know that much about it!

I guess the interest in Uncle O's Hatrack books has waned. All the old timers have just passed away with a sigh of regret and now press buttons on their t.v. remote instead. It is up to you now, young blood. Invite all your online friends to come on over. Ever faithfully, ever distantly yours in Hatrack where the locust are about to rise up out of the ground and consume the place.

I am one of the old timers...I guess. Not the oldest of the old...but pretty old. Life happens and time flies by. I think several of the "Old Timers" visit and read.

Hatrack is a great place and a lot of fun but it is like anything else that involves creativity...it takes time and hard work. We all invested a good bit of time in creating our characters and interacting with each other. Writing is work and takes thought and planning...it's just that some of us enjoy doing the work and putting in the time and have the time. When we don't have the time, we may drift away into life until we fall into another pocket of time.

I have spent a month or more just reading the previous posts and trying to get the feel of the stories and characters. I know what you mean about there not being a lot of people in Hatrack but it shouldn't keep you from writing...to be corny...write and they will come.

Don't give up...one of my E-mail groups has several of the "old timers" in it. We have been together for 9 or 10 years and some of us still have never met in person. Go to the weekly chat and you will find some of the old timers...but don't tell them MA called them old timers!

OSC's writing is not as died out as you might think. Many people still read and enjoy his works. And I actually studied Ender's Game at school with my English class. People just aren't as fanatic about the books as the members of the forum, so they don't spend time creating their own characters to live the stories.

I taught ENDER'S GAME to my gifted students. Scott and his work will never die...somewhere someone will always being reading his works. It is just that time has a way of passing and people go different and/or new ways.

I still read and re-read his books and stories. People will come back to Hatrack...just have patience...they always had a way of finding us...they will again.

We actually read "Ender's Game" in a Science Fiction class that I took in college. It was used as the intro to SciFi b/c the prof felt that it was something that pretty much everyone could relate to. I think it won a lot of people over to the genre.

Shhhhhh ... don't tell. I haven't read it. I own a copy of Ender's Shadow, though, which I haven't read either. I have two books I'm reading now I have to finish before I can start another - C.S.Lewis' "Out of the Silent Planet" and a little book called "The Valiant Papers". Why am I reading two books at once? I don't know. I earnestly await your info, Ann.

Well, since you're making your own story, most of what you need is a very creative imagination. It also might help to read The Tales of Alvin Maker since this part of the forum is based on the series. And... it's "Hatrack 1830s" if they had Burger King back then I shudder to think how fat this country should be right now.

Hi John,

Something I found helpful was www.connerprairie.org. I used to live in Indiana, so I knew to check this out; it's a "living history" place. Their website has some easy-to-digest info on life in the 1830s. Welcome to Hatrack, and feel free to swing by the pottery shop. Caro might be persuaded to give you a job of helping to keep her kiln going.

Welcome, Friend. not *just* live as if it's 1830s. As someone else mentioned, this board is based on Orson Scott card's Alvin Maker series. The first book is Seventh Son. Start with that.

Caro and John, I live in Indiana just a couple hours north of Conner Prairie. Here is an addres that might take you where you want to go. www.connerprairie.org/ Being at Conner Prairie is kind of spooky. I was talking with one of the traders at the Lenape Village and told him I was from Fort Wayne and he said "oh, the Miami village." The Miami being an Indian Tribe of the day. They have since been pretty much killed off and the government nolonger recognizes them as a separate people group. Anyway, I have read up on the Miami since I live in their hunting grounds along the Wabash River and the trader and I went on just as if it were 1816.

Don't you just love that place? I'm hoping my kids will be old enough to appreciate what they're seeing if we take them up there this summer. We used to live in Greenwood, south of Indy. Are you familiar with that area? I'm told there is a Shaker village somewhere around Louisville; I can't wait to check it out!

I have not been to Greenwood, but.... There is also a place just across the border in Ohio called Souder Farm and Village which is simelar with replicas of a farm, Dr. office, school house, etc. plus a lot more touristy stuff like hand thrown pottery which you can see being made and I believe have a hand in making, a really big general store, and icream parlor. Then in northern Indiana there are two towns which are just wonderful. The town center of Shipshewana is like a throwback from the 1800's with plank sidewalks, antique shops, lots of victorian B & B's, and my favorite part is a huge flea market. It is a big Amish community, so you get to see lots of men in hats and shoeless kids and dowdy women in aprons and horse poop. Also, there is Grabill near Leo north of Fort Wayne which I would recommend seeing during the festival which is only arts and crafts, antiques (and junk food). Also, there is a festival in Fort Wayne called the Johnny Apppleseed Festival which is held outdoors over several acres around the Johnny Appleseed grave site. It is almost completely reinactment. They have a Native camp, Civil War Camp, settler's camp, and craftsmen making furniture of willow branches (it's something akin to wicker), tinsmiths making things you can buy, and performers such as a youth drum and fife corps, drum and bagpipe corps (marching around the grounds), and games such as a maze made of bails of straw, a merry-go-round made of logs and rope (you'd have to see it), a man operated bucking bronco barrel, and all kinds of food such as sasparilla, kettle cooked carmel corn, soups, turkey legs, and whatever 1830's people might have eaten at a festival. I just love those places.

Hello everybody! In the past 4 months I have become enamored with "Uncle Orson's" Tales of Alvin Maker. I bought the first book at work in February, because it was only 4 bucks, then found that I thoroughly enjoyed it, so I continued to purchase his books in the series. Mind you these are the only books by Mr. Card I've read thus far, but plan to read Ender's Game because I heard that was a trip from a buddy Anywho, I JUST finished reading The Crystal City today, and I must say that it was superb. I was completely satisfied with the way things ended, or rather, didn't end lol. I read in the foreword in Alvin Journeyman that there was an online community devoted to Alvin Maker fans, and thought "Oh cool". It came up again in the last section of The Crystal City, this time with a URL, so I thought "what the hay" and here I am. I plan on setting up a little background info for my newly fabricated character here soon, so that should be fun. Well, thank you for reading my long and...well, informational post, for those that did.

Welcome! Feel free to stop by Scarlet's pub. Ahavah's running it while she's away, and you'll probably usually find one of my characters hanging about.

One thing I learned here, it ebbs and flows. If you post and don't get an answer too quickly, don't give up. Some folks like me don't even have a puter. I check in at least once a week, more if I can.

Hope you enjoy Hatrack!

All that talk of "old timers" made my ears start itching. I doubt anyone except perhaps MABarlett, Tansy and Scarlett would remember me. I was part of the original group after Scott moved the forum from AOL to the Internet.

For those of you commenting that it's a little slow, I can attest to the fact that it does ebb and flow. Mostly it depends on the stories. Write interesting stories and people will be logging in multiple times a day to try and jump into the action.

I haven't been here in a couple of years. At one point we wrote a story that included nearly the entire town and took several weeks of furious (busy, not mad) writing to bring to a conclusion. The bad guy was named Jack. Tinkerer was the balance to Jack. We ALMOST got kicked off the board, and the lovely Kathy Kidd had to intervene and direct us to wrap it up quickly.

Well, I'll stop telling stories that no one but me remembers. <foolish grin>

I've had a cast of charaters over the years
Rev Sinner Church
Father Eglise
dog

But Tinkerer was my first and so I think I'll ease back into Hatrack with him.

Have patience as I get back into the swing. Nice to meet all you.

Amos, now would be a great time to surprise Honey in her own barn, if you're so inclined.

To all - Honey will be making the rounds in town soon, and is certain to make some outrageous claims - some of these will be untruths about her relationships w/ your characters. If this is a problem for anyone, just let me know.

Honey, feel free to make up all the stuff you want about Black Shep and Amos. (Just don't write for them, of course.) In the generally scheme of things, Amos is considered a "good" character. Shep is considered a villion(sp?) But a most benevolent one. Not sure either one will be very offended. Amos typically doesn't care what people think, and Shep's only reputation is bad! <G> Write away.

I guess I'm one of those old timers myself <sigh>, but I haven't stopped by since the old AOL days.

The volume of writing back then was pretty intense although it did slack off in the summer if I recall.

Hope I can be around here it post a bit - but what happened to the Boathouse?

Ah, memories of on-line chats with OSC and his sharing his books as he wrote each chapter.

Take care, Capt. Hope you make it back...
