Caro, Capt. is right. It would slow down in the summer due to vacations, summer school, summer jobs, etc. Don't worry...I have just been tied up in some of life lately and I am still trying to find some character to write that I feel comfortable writing. We used to have a Deed Office and I have been reading back through some of the old copy I ran across after getting out of that assisted living place. Maybe I will just open the Deed Office back up...I think MA had a few broomsticks left...I'm not sure why she just had the broomsticks and no brooms on them...maybe I will dig out some more memories...don't give up...people drift in and out...keep on keeping on and don't forget two important thoughts in mind: never spit into the wind and keep all skunks down wind

Ma! My goodness, it's great to hear from you. I am sorry to hear about your stroke, but I certainly hope you can write a bit here. It would certainly give me more incentive to stick around.I had thought that all the old timers had up and left. I saw that John Binder posted here a while ago but that was only one or two posts, and I really just stumbled across the site by accident. The only one I kept in touch with off-line was Melyn and I haven't heard from her in quite a while either <sigh>. I just wish I had kept all of those old transcripts. Be sure to let me know if you start writing! Take Care Rick

HOLY CRAP, Ahavah. I finally got Seventh son and i was reading it all last night. It's good. But the question that Rowdy asked has me STUMPED... the only city i can remember BESIDES Hatrack River is Camelot. And that's WAY too far away for me to be from... I remember there was a two CLOSE to Hatrack.... and then there was one that was WAY out west that was a City. It even had City in the name. I lent the book to my buddy and won't get it back for maybe a month.... WHAT DO I DOOOOOO????

Sounds good to me. In all honesty, it's been so long since I read the series, I wouldn't know any better myself. If I ever get some free time, I'll try to brush up a bit.

I want to make sure I understand "Hatrack time" correctly. Each folder is a seperate timeline, correct? This means that Caro can be working in her shop on Main St. and also visiting the charm school on Hometown Hatrack at the same time. Please tell me if I'm right or not - this has always confused me.

This is correct. Each folder contains its own time frame. However, if at some point we all begin to start intertwining our plots and stories, then the timeframes may converge as certain storylines may take place across many folders and for continuity's sake you want to try to keep it all consistent. I know that Jessica and I have some huge plans for the Bakers and the Charmings and we'd love for others to get involved in our story when it takes off and we'd love to be part of yours as well. Thanks, Ben

Its time for a major event of some sort. We've done a street dance in the past, parties and such. What bout some kind of festival? Ideas? It can get confusing...when there were few of us before I kinda remember new characters showing up while people were out of town...they would stay a while and then go away when the old timers showed back up...some wrote several characters during the lean times.I am ready to start the Deed Office up, Ben. I will get it posted in a day or two. Capt., I don't remember "Melyn"...will go back to the few old notes and refresh myself...wait, I got it now! She was your wife...right? MA Guys, the way "MA" ("Ma") came about was that I goofed when I started writing in Hatrack and signed my screen name...MABartlett...at the bottom of my first post. It was picked up and continued as my character name. My name is MaryAnn Bartlett and that led to "MA". In real life some still call me MA...that's okay or you can call me Ann

By the way, Ben...where was the Deed Office? Main Street? That was why I was waiting to post Deed Office and then I got side-tracked Mr. Eddings who enticed me into re-reading all his books again. One upside to having a stroke...the harder you work at it, the more of your memories you can recoup...not all...but some...mainly it means you get to read your personal library of books all over again from start. My friends had to sell my homes, cars and property to put me in that Black Hole of Calcutta but, thank the gods, they kept all my books...I guess no one wanted my books...

This is as good a thread as any to comment on Black Shep's reactions in the Inn. Capt Harriman's writer - Sorry for tossing in the military reference. From your char's name I figured he had some uniform or hat or something. Just chaulk it up to the idea that in addition to a knack (baking) Shep also has a handicap - He can't remember anyone's name. He'll be calling your character Colonol, General, Admiral, and just about anything except by his actual name. To MA - This looks like it will be fun. Feel free to let Shep have it with both barrel's. Through his size and rough language he tries to bully everyone he meets. (I still don't know if Ben's forgiven me for some of the things Shep said when he first arrived.) Shep is also . . . well, he's a slop. He's got a bushy beard that is disgustingly filled with bits of food and drink. He hasn't bathed since he was baptized as a young child. But, I fully expect that MA will let him have it. Just don't have MA go off in a huff. It's really hard to write an obnoxious character when everyone keeps avoding him. And, of course, understand that *I'M* not Shep. I'm a very nice person who tries to speak kindly and find the good in people. Shep's not. Rodney

Use the name "Shep" for this character. The name is short for "Black Sheep Baker." He is a vile and disgusting person who was mostly disowned by his family. So, he became the Black Sheep of the family. He is not a black person. Also, Ben Whiley was the writer for Pleasant Baker. Pleasant left in the great Baker exodus last year. I see Ben is back on the forum. Not sure if he plans to bring Pleasant back or not. MA, I just read the post in the Inn. It's perfect. Go ahead and take a swing at Shep if MA's so inclined. Don't do anything drastic like knock him out or anything. BTW, he's about 6'4" and almost 300 lbs. (Being a baker means you always eat well.) BTW, I also write Amos Tinkerer. However, I decided long ago that my Hatrack characters never meet each other. I'm not a good enough writer (IMHO) that anyone wants to read long exchanges between my characters. Besides I like the unexpectedness of interacting with other writers better than simply writing to myself. Rodney [This message has been edited by Black Shep Baker (edited September 01, 2004).]

Just go ahead and take the Inn completely over. It needs a good owner. I was writing Pleasant Baker but I had too many characters to keep up with and so when I pulled out for my hiatus he left too. As far as I'm concerned Ben Baker can stop in at the deed office and make the arrangements for you. :-) And to clear up any confusion...you can all contact me at benwhaley@hotmail.com or benwhaley@benwhaley.com. Either addy will work. I moderate the forum under my characters name. Ben Baker. Thanks, Ben

Hey, guys! I saw James Peacemaker was back in town. Did he ever kill James X., his grandfather the assassin who went mad from a congenital disease? Is the disease ticking away inside his own body? I'm thinking of bringing one of my multiple characters back, at least for a visit.

Heck no! That sounds great...especially with the name Rowdy. Tell him/her/you to come help us dig it out and clean it up. Might need whoever is writing or said he might write a blacksmith to help repair the bars which I think used to be wood and make a lock and chains...unless you want to get the women together and crochet some "chains".When "Rowdy" is ready to take over the jail, we can get Ben (??) to put Rowdy's name on it...and maybe change the name to something else...whatever you want to do. It is hard to write so many characters but maybe we can get some new people eventually and let them take over some of the characters...that Miss Honey...I think...sounds a lot like her Ladyship did. I am not saying we have to have the same characters...we couldn't...but we had a music hall where this Lady...cough...put on shows and where the men would fight for front row seats and have their tongues hanging out and their eyeballs spinning. We had a post office and a post mistress that was the most evil, bad-smelling-ugly old skinny krone you can imagine. When she hit the street even the rattlesnakes sprouted feet to get away. She was so mean and ugly that ten year old road kill would come back to life so it could run and hide. And then we had some very gentle...GOSSIPS...it was a hoot and it IS going to be a new kind of HOOT. Let's just cut loose and we can always have a character go off to visit and not come back...one time all the outhouses disappeared in Hatrack...but MA had absolutely, positively NOTHING to do with that........it was someone else...we also need to find a sanctified and sanctimonious (SP) preacher to open a church of the grand high poobah....I'll hang in here with you...if I am a bit absent in the next few days it is because my little one year old kitten is very sick and probably wont make it. I take a cab over to see her off and on during the day...I can't drive anymore. I adopted her last year right after I lost my 20-year old Maine Coon and Siamese within a week or two. I have no family and all my friends are in nursing homes so my little cat is pretty special...I'll miss her but they are doing all they can...anyway...it may be late at night...and tell any new people to take MA with a grain of salt...she's just blustery so you wont know her heart is easily broken.

There is a Hatrack Jailhouse folder somewhere. I'll have to look around and find it. In the meantime I did notice you started a new folder, which is fine. Theres not a way to change the name on the folder by the way with the current software we are using. I currently write James Peacemaker..hes a very mysterious deputy. So whoever becomes the new sheriff I'd be looking forward to working for him. I don't think Jess has the time right now to work with Connor Nettles who is our current sheriff. Thanks, Ben

Maybe Rowdy could take the position, but he'd definitely be open to help. He's a big enough guy to maybe deter crime, but (shhhh) he's a pussy cat inside. His twin sister Riley's the preachingest one in town right now. She has dreams of grandeur to be a preacher, but she's always been a bit too black and a bit to eclectic in her sermons to find a church that would want her. She's planning on holding services as soon as their farm gets up and running, which I thought might be nice after the soiree.

I'm not sure who is writing whom...but how 'bout if we say whoever takes the Jail just writes as a deptuy sheriff??? That way if the person who wrote it wants to come back, he/she can make up a story of coming back to town. This way, we could always add deputies and take away deputies...does that make any sense? Is that okay with the SYSOP and writers????Do you think we should open up a zoo for that lizzard person...heh,heh,heh MA, being smartalleck...heh,heh,heh Ben, how should I talk about locations for people...like if someone opens a new place on Main Street...how should I describe it as up yonder; down yonder, over yonder, back yonder, in yonder, as the crow flies, as the snake slithers, as the fish flops. Another thing I remember was about meat...we just talk about fixing it and eating it without going into how we got it. I think the General Store owner would talk about getting it from that virtual town we used to go get stuff or in which we could "visit" to get out of town for a while. I also think we had a butcher at one time ?????????? and we just talked about buying from him or her without talking about <<killing>> anything. I'm not sure but if we had to talk about chickens...they were scared into the dumplings. We chased mice but they always got away. Sooooooo is it okay with everyone if we write deputy sheriffs and that way the sheriff can come back when and if he or she wants. Ben, is that old map of Hatrack still around somewhere? If not, can I draw one so I can describe places...like, "there's a building up Main Street, just three doors down from the General Store, that would be a good place for a mouse trap factory..." ???? <<just an example>>
