Boxing champion Sam Boulder is tricked into leaving Earth. On sports promoter Johnny Stello's planet, he encounters an alien species that is repulsed by the barbaric behavior of humans, yet fascinated by their warrior culture. Johnny's species has an aptitude for technology, but not an aptitude for fighting. Nor do they want to risk imitating negative aspects of human behavior. So they recruit humans and use technology to protect them in the arena. For 3000 years, they have brought swordsmen, martial artists, athletes, and commandos to their planet to perform combat as entertainment. Humans are on the verge of self destruction. Gladiating has become so integrated into the culture, the leadership worries about the impact when the gladiator harvest dries up. ......... Looking for feedback about the premise. It's original, for sure.. Couple of questions. Are there three different species right off the bat? Humans, Johnny Stello's species and another alien species? Or is it just the two? What is going to drive the story? Character or plot? It reminds me of some of the earlier Harry Harrison stuff, where there is a conflict, the humans are prevailing but just barely and the continued survival is well.. questionable. I enjoy that kind of book so if the writing supports the plot I would read it. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Some things don't quite make sense to me, but I found it made more sense if I tried to read it as a back-cover blurb rather than anything else. It had a vague sense of familiarity - the premise is quite different, but I read Matthew Reilly's Contest last year which also had the alien-abduction-and-use-as-gladiator motif. I'll try and put my finger on what I felt were issues to me... Boxing champion Sam Boulder is tricked into leaving Earth. Humans are on the verge of self destruction. So they recruit humans and use technology to protect them in the arena the leadership worries about the impact I think that posting a small synopsis like this is a great idea, and probably also great practice for honing a story or backcover blurb or query letter. And I am looking forward to more info down the track [This message has been edited by BenM (edited November 05, 2009).] IP: Logged |
