Well, I wouldn't say "In the Vault" is typical of Lovecraft. Try "At the Mountains of Madness" or "The Shadow out of Time" first, then delve into some of his short works. There's a lot of Lovecraft around all of a sudden---he lapsed into public domain, in 2007, I believe---I'd recommend a Barnes & Noble volume that collects all his horror work (not counting his ghostwriting and revisions). I still remember reading "The Colour Out of Space" in high school. OK, I'll admit it. I don't scare easily, but that story creeped me out. It was a different kind of creepiness that's hard to describe, but 35 years later, I still remember the feeling. Very similar to the way reading Stoker's Dracula made the skin of my neck unusually sensitive for about six months afterward... IP: Logged |
