I have an idea about a computer book on a topic/level that I don't see any books out there. I'm qualified to write on the topic and think I can. Where do I start? Do I start and then send a sample to a publisher in hopes to get published? Do I "pitch" the idea to somebody and get accepted before starting? Should I try to roughly write entire book first then try to get it published? Part of why its confusing, perhaps, is that I assume that there are more professional ways to do screenshots and diagrams that *I* could do and I know a book like this would have LOADS of figures and screen shots. Any thoughts to send me in the right direction? IP: Logged |

My understanding of the way non-fiction book publishing works is that books are sold on proposals, not completed works. So you'd need a good pitch, an outline (chapter titles and brief summary), and the first three chapters (so they get a sense of your writing style.) My understanding is that you can directly query non-fiction publishing houses, though some people will work through an agent. I hope this helps! I'm sure others will have more info. IP: Logged |

Thanks for tip, Kay Tee. It sounds like I should have a good chunk written before taking next step then. I wouldn't want to write a small amount and then be given a crazy deadline for the book when I work full-time. LOL thanks. IP: Logged |
