Caroline entered. She went over to the not-so-long yet line forming along the food dishes. She scooped some salad, some bread, and took a glass of water.

Finally, alone with her food, Caroline had some time to think over today's events. we really don't operate that well yet as a group. I hope we won't have a battle soon...

Selet was a small boy for his age and he ate very little, but the nutritionist seemed to think that if you gorge yourself you get taller. selet ate alone because he was a loner, in no ones jeesh. Selet ate as much as he could and got rid of the rest, the nutritionist said that he should finish his food but selet walked away.

Constant entered the mess and took his food.

He was so excited about this army - it is going to be the best army ever! Constant would work out his best for Spider. They would have steady practice every day. And the kids that won’t like it will happily be transferred.

Constant came back from his thoughts and noticed that he almost finished the food on his plate. He grinned. He finished the rest in a bite, and headed out of the room.

Peter entered the mess and recieved his food. Some people were already there. He looked around for a familiar face.
"What took you?" rob's voice sounded out. Peter spun around to find Rob gobbling down his food.
"oh, hi Rob," Peter retorted.
"What's wrong?"
"It's just that Alicia kid."
"Ya, umm, just let it go. Guess what. I'm recording whatever the nutrisionist says on this tape recorder. trying to get her fired."
"Ya, umm, that's just fine Rob." Peter proceded to finish (or start) his lunch listening in on other people's conversations.

Spencer walked into the mess and grabbed a tray of food. His eyes searched the crowd for someone he knew, they fell on two boys who were wearing centipede uniforms. Might as well since we will meet sooner or later. he thought to himself. Armies did not have to sit together but they usually did anyway. He made his way over there and when he got to them he asked "So this is where centipede sits?"

A boy sat down and interegated him asking where centipede was.

"I guess we just sat here," Peter replied. Rob got up and walked over to the boy. "Do you like peas?" he asked. Peter laughed to himself and then told Rob to lay off.

"So far centipede is going well. But besides stupid armies, do you ever think about anything else? Like where do you come from, what do you think about academics?"

"Look kid I just want to eat my lunch, I thought an army was suposed to sit together if I knew we didn't I wouldn't have approached you so save your homesick complaints for someone else." Spencer said. Spencer hated being bothered about stuff that didn't matter.

"Okay," Peter replied calmly. Ooo.. an enemy! Good, time to have some fun. Back to old times where I was free to out-wit other people. Peter was almost halfway through his lunch. He slowed down and chewed as loudly as he could, but pretended it was accidental by stopping and adding in comments whenever he hit a particularly load note. Rob was on his left and Spencer on his right. Rob chewed quickly, but only took a bite every minute or so. He wiggled his feet in glee of the food like he was some sort of 3-year-old. Overall, Peter kept quiet so the time would pass by as slowly as possible. He wondered if Spencer was annoyed yet. hmmmm.....?

The kid was tampering with his authority! That's it!

"C'mon Rob!" They stood up and walked to another table with some other boys at the other side of the room.

"Mind if we sit here?" he asked. They didn't argue. There. See if he enjoys being with himself. And if he does who cares? He wouldn't have a life in that case anyway.

Flawless Victory, Spencer thought to himself. He was glad to know they didn't have to sit together at lunc, it would be a waste of energy, pretending to care when he didn't.
Spencer had long since finished the food he planned on eating but, sat there trying to see how long this kid could attempt to be annoying before annoying himself.
Not as long as I could go, but then again Spencer would never be as immature as to try and do somthing like that in the first place.
Why should he waste his time trying to piss people off when he did it so good without even relizing it?

"Hi," Jod said as he sat down next to Will. Well here's Will and here's, what's her name? I might just be making some friends after all. Jod positioned his plate and began to eat.

"By the way, I never did catch your name," Jod chimed. Usually there are people to sit next to and people to stay away from. Lately, everyone has been someone to sit next to. Am I missing something here? Where'd Koi and fig go anywayz? They were right behind him and Will before. Jod looked up at the scoreboard, squirrel was'nt doing the greatest. What could I do to help our army out? How can I become a toon leader? All these thoughts ran through Jod's head as he sat there, still waiting for the name of the girl.

The day was still young and there still be time to plan something.

"Rob, I'm bored," Peter yelled at Rob. For the first time that day (that Peter actually noticed) Rob smiled.

"Let's chuck some food around, huh Peter?" Rob blurted out.

"Sounds fine to me Rob. hmm.. how should I go about doing this? Peter slowly slid his plate so a fifth of it levitated over the side of the table. Caching! Peter slammed his fist down and moved to the side so he himself wouldn't get hit. Some sort of concuaction of egg fleww over their heads in a neat glob. Rob watched. Slap! It landed. Oh, crap!

"You just hit Spencer in the back!" Rob said too loadly. They quickly ducked and moved across the room out of Spencer's sight before he turned around.

"Now what are we gonna do?" asked Rob.

"I don't know! He's gonna kill us!" Peter replied. Soem of the food contents had also sprayed a clumpy spray on some of the other kids.

Silly little kid Spencer shook his head, well he had two options he could join in the food fight and have fun(yeah right), or he could go beat the little bastard to a pulp.
Instead of doing either of these Spencer got up and walked over to them, "I believe this belongs to you," spencer placed the egg on Peters tray, and then added, "does everthing and everyone you come in contact with flee? Well either way I have returned it to you and hope that you will find a way to keep it under control" and with that Spencer turned to leave.

"Oh, I'm Caroline. Or rather, Carrot. And you are... Jed, right?" Caroline was so proud of her name-remembering skills. She could possibly name half of the Squirrels from her memory right now.

Caroline finished her food, and looked at the fellow Squirrels, who haven't said much more. "I don't know about you," She said, while rising in a yawn. "But I'm going to sleep now."

She walked out of the mess, hoping that she would find someone in the barracks already asleep, and not be the first one.

As they'd exited the Commanders barracks another new kid had shown up to speak to Cross. "Not more transfers," thought Beck as they passed by. Then Sasha answered her earlier question by stating that he was hungry and so she turned in the direction of the nearest chute down to the mess. Something odd about the kid they'd passed niggled at her but as he'd seemed more than a bit annoyed so she didn't worry about it. She'd get to know who he was later on anyway.

As the chutes down were pretty close together she didn't say anything else to Sasha until they were down to the mess level.

"So how long you served in Rabbit for?" she asked as they entered the mess and headed to the serving hatch.

"Since I was nine. Three years," Sasha answered promptly. He looked around the mess hall, but he didn't see any other Centipede uniforms, nor Rabbits. They'd been held up talking to Cross beyond the normal mealtime, and they would have to be quick if they wanted anything to eat. He suspected that Cross would have something in mind as soon as his army could assemble, even if it was no more than introducing himself.

"How long have you been in Centipede?" he asked in return, stepping smoothly into line behind her. "What're the soldiers like?"

"Well," said and thought Jod,"I've narrowed it down to a list in my head, but I don't know names." You are on my list . Jod glanced over and saw Carrot just exiting the Mess. Well, that was quick! Jod was kinda ignoring Will. Jod saw some kids playing games, some normal conversations, and then food flying across the room. What's it good for anyway? Jod looked back at Will wondering if Will would give him any valuable information.

"You were saying?" Jod said back just in time. (Just in time from Will to think Jod stopped paying attention to him for the quick moment)

"Since I was nine. Three years."

There was no-one else queueing anymore so Beck grabbed a tray and went straight to the serving hatch. The food that was doled out looked even less appetising than usual, then again it had been sat there for a while. She was just about to comment on three years being a long time when Sasha asked,

"How long have you been in Centipede? What're the soldiers like?"

Beck thought for a moment and calculated just how long she'd been in Centipede.

"I've been in Centipede for just over 9 months I guess, its seems longer some how. The soldiers were ok, but you're not the only new transfer. I reckon more than a third - maybe nearer a half have been replaced, including all my previous Toon. A lot of kids new out of launch too."

She scanned the tables but couldn't see anyone she recognised from Centipede so she went over to one of the nearest empty ones and took a seat. She began to eat trying to ignore what she was putting in her mouth. She knew by now that even if it didn't taste that great it kept you healthy.

"I sure wish they'd transfer in a new Cook."

SQUIRREL ARMY

Fig burst into the mess, gasping for breath. He stopped suddenly, not knowing what to do next. He cranes his neck and tried to scan the enitre mess, his face distorted with the effort of trying to see someone with Squirrel colors on, but it was impossile to see everyone. He needed a faster, more efficient method.

Fig placed his hand on the table nearest to him and used it as leverage to jump onto it, causing some boy's food to splatter into his face. "Sorry about that," Fig muttered. "It's an emergency..."

With that, he turned to the rest of the Mess, now a great deal taller than everyone else in the mess and obviously demanding a lot of attention. Fig placed his hands on his hips and shouted, " SQUIRREL ARMY MEMBERS! REPORT TO BATTLEROOM FIVE IMMEDIATELY! WE HAVE A BATTLE WITH SQUIRREL IN FIFTEEN MINUTES!"

Fig turned and hopped of the table, immediately leaving, not caring to notice whether any Squirrel members were in there to begin with. He had a job to do.

"I sure wish they'd transfer in a new Cook," Beck commented.

For the first time that day, Sasha laughed, even as he was about to whistle sympathetically at the idea of half an army of transfers. "Agreed. Then again, it would probably be a cook fresh from whatever they have instead of Launch, so no guarantee that the food would be any better."

A younger boy in Squirrel uniform was actually standing on a table, shouting something about a battle. Sasha nodded in his direction. "Sounds exciting."

He glanced up at the army scoreboard on the wall. Sure enough, Squirrel's score had begun to flash. So had Hydra's, as he had known it would. No one could stay at Battle School for six years without knowing the standings well enough to guess which two armies were "due" at any given time. Commanders and toon leaders determined strategy based on it. The exact timing of the battle would, of course, be less predictable.

It occurred to him for the first time that Centipede was higher in the standings than Rabbit, so that he was effectively under more pressure to perform than he had been before. That could be a temporary condition, of course, since neither one was particularly consistent... and both had a number of transfers over the last few days... but he didn't let his calculations of rank go much further. One surefire way to go crazy was to obsess over advantages for the standings.

He had finished his food without even really knowing what it was. He thought it had been tomato-based, but beyond that, he hadn't been paying attention.

Sasha laughed at her comment about the Chef and added that they'd probably be the equivalent of a launchy transfer and Beck nodded her agreement trying not to laugh and spray food everywhere. This guy seemed friendly which made a nice change. Suddenly, a kid started yelling about a battle between Squirrel and Hydra in 15 minutes, and when Beck looked up from her food found that he was standing on a table.

"Sounds exciting," Sasha added as he glanced at the scoreboard.

"Uummhh," said Beck managing at last to get herself under control and swallow. "Yeah, I'm surprised it's such short notice though, that's unusual."

She noticed that Sasha was still looking at the board and guessed that he was checking out Centipede's standings. Beck glanced quickly at the board and was pleased but also pretty amazed that they were above Rabbit. Beck ate the last mouthful of her food and sat back a little.

"Well I guess we won't have a battle for a little while, what with our new Commander and all the transfers. After so many ex-launchies turned up in the barracks earlier on it was a relief to see someone with experience though."

Joe slowly entered the mess, angry about his pittiful performance in Lucas's quarters. He had expected it to be different, after his apparent change.

He got in the line and noticed Beck and another Centipede soldier in front. How did she get there so fast? He took his food. He searched for the Centipedes but couldn't see them. At last, he found them, the new Centipede giggling at something.

"Hullo" he said, placing his dish next to Beck, and sitting down. "I'm Joe" He added.

(ooc: cochick - yes, just wasn't going to comment on the merits of Launchies in front of Joe. I'll fix)

"Well I guess we won't have a battle for a little while, what with our new Commander and all the transfers. After so many ex-launchies turned up in the barracks earlier on it was a relief to see someone with experience though," Beck said. So he'd been right when he guessed the commander was new. That meant a month, he supposed, in which they'd have only formations to memorize. He didn't know what to say to the compliment about experience. He knew that some of the Launchies were no doubt more valuable to Centipede once they knew what they were doing; and they would know, in a month's time. Besides, here was another soldier sitting with them.

"Hi, Joe," Sasha answered. The other Centipede was small, probably only eight or so, and had a birthmark across his nose. Sasha blinked; he had seen the face before. "Weren't you just in the hallway -- when I went to talk to the commander?"

He regretted mentioning it almost immediately; Joe's expression had been so unhappy when he arrived, his own meeting with Cross had almost certainly not gone well. Sasha wondered if Joe had been announcing his presence as a transfer. He looked young enough to be one of the recent Launch graduates Beck had mentioned.

"Hey, never mind, my name's Sasha," he finished lamely.

Sasha hadn't replied as at that moment Joe walked up to them and sat down next to her and introduced himself to Sasha. Sasha said Hi and looked curiously at him as if he recognised him from somewhere.

"Weren't you just in the hallway -- when I went to talk to the commander?" she enquired, but before he could reply added, "Hey, never mind, my name's Sasha."

Beck was a little surprised at Sasha's u-turn and looked at Joe again who wasn't looking too happy. He was probably still worrying about the Third Invasion rumour but Cross had told them not to discuss it so she couldn't even try to reassure him.

"You OK, Joe," she asked with a smile and gave him a quick wink hoping Sasha wouldn't notice. It was the only way she could try and communicate that everything was cool and not to worry too much.

If it really was the Third Invasion starting it was worth worrying about. However, since being at Battle School she'd learned there was nothing she could do about information the teachers were keeping from her and worrying only stressed her out. So she'd developed the habit of not letting things get to her if they were outside her power to remedy.

"I assumed you'd already eaten and gone when we came in, I should have told you there was a quicker route down here from Commander Cross' quarters than going back via the barracks, sorry I forgot."

Something caught her eye and she looked up to see that the score board had begun to flash randomly. Armies stats would disappear and the reappear a few seconds later.

"What the heck....," she whispered.

"Hi, Joe," The new Centipede said. "Weren't you just in the hallway -- when I went to talk to the commander?"

Yes he was. And here's another first impression gone wrong.

"Hey, never mind, my name's Sasha," he finished lamely. Joe smiled.

"Hi Sasha." He said, trying to sound friendly. He heard Beck ask "You Ok Joe?" and add a wink. He didn't understand at first why she winked, but it felt good. Like both of them were together in something.

"I assumed you'd already eaten and gone when we came in, I should have told you there was a quicker route down here from Commander Cross' quarters than going back via the barracks, sorry I forgot."

Joe knew there was a shortcut. He just forgot to use it. He was about to say that when he heard Beck say "What the heck..." He looked at the direction of her gaze and saw it. Armies names and stats randomlly appearing and dissapearing in the scoreboard.

Then he remembered. The third invasion! of course. How could he have forgotten?

"Do you think it's the thir..." He caught himself in midsentence. "I mean..." He looked at Sash nervously. "You know..."

"What the heck..." Beck whispered suddenly, and Sasha followed her gaze: right back to the scoreboard. Every army's score had begun to flash, appearing and disappearing randomly. Sasha cursed under his breath in Russian. His parents wouldn't be happy to know that he had learned those words as a four-year-old, one day when the news was full of reports that the containment over the wreck of the old Chernobyl plant was about to collapse. He panicked for a moment, thinking that all the armies must have been given battle orders simultaneously. But that was ridiculous.

Sasha wasn't entirely stupid. He might have assumed that the wink was about a personal matter -- Beck had been in Cross's quarters at the same time Joe had, and could easily have been subjected to an explanation of whatever problems the younger soldier might have had. But then Joe blurted, "Do you think it's the thir..."

He stopped suddenly, as if he had said something he shouldn't have. "I mean..." He looked at Sasha nervously. "You know..."

"What is it?" Sasha asked urgently.

Beck cringed as Joe blurted out,

"Do you think it's the thir..." Then remembering that he wasn't supposed to talk about it he tried to cover his tracks, "I mean..."

He paused and then lamely finished with "You know..."

"What is it?" asked Sasha, clearly intrigued by Joe's furtive behaviour.

"I don't know what's going on," said Beck quickly, pretending to misunderstand Sasha's question, "but I think we need to get back to barracks quickly and maybe Cross can tell us what's happening. Let's go."

She jumped up from the table and headed towards the exit before Sasha could ask any more questions. Just before leaving the Mess she glanced again at the scoreboard which was now completely blank.

"I don't know what's going on," said Beck, in a tone of voice that suggested a half-truth, "but I think we need to get back to barracks quickly and maybe Cross can tell us what's happening. Let's go."

She stood up from the table, and Sasha obeyed, but he was angered by her attempt to hide whatever it was.

"You mean, you think you know what's going on, but you want to leave it up to Cross to tell me? Look -- the scoreboard's blank! At least part of Battle School's computer system is down!" he said to her back as she hurried for the door.

It was all the more reason to return to the barracks. The soldiers from other armies had also noticed the blanked standings, and a murmur of confused voices was quickly rising into panic. There was no sign of the adults who had served their food only a few minutes before; it did not seem to be a minor problem.

Sasha thought of Chernobyl again, and shivered.

"Yeah, let's go." Said Joe, feeling like smacking himself in the head. "I'm sorry" he muttered under his breath, so only Beck could hear, and followed her out of the room.

//ooc-gotta bring Stal in too-ooc//

“What are you going to do now that the others know what you did?” Ryan asked Bree as he turned and entered the Mess?

"What do you mean?" Bree said as she adjusted the blanket around her and Stal and followed.

The mess was completely deserted chairs had been knocked over, trays of food were left untouched, and there seemed to be no sign of the adults who usually served their food. The massive scoreboard, which had shown every army’s standing, was now blank. Bree surveyed the room more closely, What are we going to need? What can we take with us?

“Who’s going to believe that a launchy, one who’s only been here for what a day or so, could ever get an entire army to do what they want? It just doesn’t sound possible. And besides, I’m done with that kind of stuff…all of it."

Tugging once more at her blanket, Bree ducked out quickly from it and hurried across the room. "I mean people deserve a chance to change, right?" she said as she gathered up some of the cleaner forks, knives, and spoons.

Ryan listened to Bree’s answer to his question in silence as she scurried around picking up table utensils. Was it possible that she hadn’t come to the same conclusion as he had? That the other members of the launch were not likely to buy into the story that they had concocted that was so obviously full of holes. They wouldn’t let a thing like that slide. At the back of his mind he also wondered what use they could possibly have with the tableware that Bree was picking up.

“I guess.” Ryan replied looking up at the blank scoreboard and the disarray of the Mess in general. He walked over to the drinks area and put his hand onto the hot water dispenser on the bench. Still warm. Jumping over the serving bench into the galley, he searched around until he found a cupboard with a couple thermos flasks. Taking these out he filled them up with hot water and scooped up a few sachets of hot chocolate powder. “Hey Bree, carry one of these will ya?” He said as he threw one of the flasks across to her.

Leaving his own flask on the bench, he looked around and saw a small cubical type office that was obviously the cooks. He stepped inside and tried his desk. As he expected it didn’t work. The screen was just as blank as all the rest. Pushing it to one side, he looked up and saw that Stal had entered the Mess after Bree and himself, and was now just standing in the doorway. Ryan left the office, picked up the flask he had left on the bench and returned to Bree. “There’s not much here. I saw a door out the back off the galley, but Abe’s still got the map and I didn’t think it wise to go looking my self. Open a door and we may get sucked out if one of the airlock doors had opened.” He laughed to himself at the thought of a couple other people he wouldn’t mind being sucked out, like those two Sphinx army buggerlovers Zeke and Tuck who had stuck a smelly sock in his mouth back in the barracks when he was tied up.

“What you planning doing with those?” Ryan asked Bree pointing to the knife, fork and spoons she had picked up.
