"Do what you want." Big Lizard said, smugly.
Indiana frowned. bent down and pulld Troy with him, knowing it was pointless. He knew very well that bots came in each our and cleaned.
He needed to prove to Lizard that he was worth it. He needed to.

Troy grabbed a napkin and bent down next to Indiana in the liquidy mess.

"Could've been worse," he said, trying to lighten Indiana's spirits. "Jab could have had us spit-shine the whole school." Of course, that was only half jokingly--there was nothing he didn't think Jab wouldn't possibly do to them--and they had humilitated themselves in front of the commander. He sighed, and started wiping.

When Faye, Bird, and The Commander (Faye could only call him by that by impulse)entered the Mess Hall, they walked into the remnants of a recent food fight. She exchanged a humorous look with Bird, then looked at The Commander for his reaction to this. By doing so, she reasoned that she would be able to find out how strict he was, or wasn't, depending on his reaction. Secretly, Faye wished that she could have been part of that food fight, but fun had to be weighed in accordance to punishment, which she waited to see if it would be dealt.

As Bird entered the Mess Hall he found the remains of a food fight and glanced at Faye with a smile. He could tell she wished she was in the food fight but Bird sure was glad he missed it. He glanced around the room and saw the who beat up the boy in the barracks. Bird had sworn to the boy she beat up he would teach her a lesson, but after seeing her he wasn't sure he wanted to mess with her. He followed Faye to get in line for food as we worringly looked at Lizard and hoped she didn't come over...

Breakfast was almost over so Bird quickly got in line and was served his food in perfect proportion to what he needed. Faye was served her food but got a lot lease then Bird got. Faye was smaller and skinner so it didn't surprise Bird to see less food then most got. Bird looked around the room for a spot to sit, but since most were already gone it wasn't hard to find a spot to sit at. "Lets sit her" Bird told Faye and they both sat down to eat their fast meal. Bird glanced at Faye and saw her eat small dantity bits with her hand under her mouth to catch stay food. 'She eat's weird' thought Bird as he ate his food by shoving it down his throught and eating as fast as he could. They were in a hurry to get to class, they didn't have time to take their time. "So" Bird started as a piece of somthing chewed up shot out and hit Faye on the chest. She looked discusted as Bird said "Oh, I'm soooooorrr". Bird started choking and coughing as he fell backward and tried to start breathing.

"Oh, I'm soooooorrr". Bird started choking and coughing as he fell backward and tried to start breathing.

Faye looked dumbfounded for a second before regaining her composure. She strained to remember what she was taught in school about situations like this. It just wouldn't come to her. She strained harder and harder. She looked down and saw Bird's face turning a sickly color. Then it hit her, the Heimlich Maneuver. She quickly went over to Bird and performed it. After a few unsuccessful tries, the food became unlodged. When Bird was back to normal, Faye looked at him and said, "You IDIOT! Don't talk with your mouth full! Didn't your parents teach you ANYTHING! Or are you just too thick to remember it!?" Faye automatically felt sorry for saying that. Whenever she was nervous or afraid, she tended to explode at people, losing her usually unfaltering composure. She smiled at Bird and said, "Sorry about that...you okay?"

Bird blacked out for a few seconds before he woke up with Faye’s gentle hands around his waist. 'What the @#$% happened' Bird thought to himself. 'Ok...this is weird. I black out and wake up with Faye’s arms around me. I must be in heaven.' Bird smiled and then when Bird felt something shoot out of his throut and hit the wall he remembered what had happened.
"You IDIOT! Don't talk with your mouth full! Didn't your parents teach you ANYTHING! Or are you just too thick to remember it!?"
'Some heaven' Bird thought as he stopped smiling and remembered what had happened.
She smiled at Bird and said, "Sorry about that...you okay?"
"(GASP), ya, (cough, cough), thanks...for saving my life." Bird smiled, leaned into Faye and kissed her on the cheek. It was a 2 second kiss on the cheek but it felt like a lifetime. Bird slowly turned his head to the clock for an excuse to not look at Faye. “OH MY GOSH! We’re supposed to be at lunch duty." Bird found the door he was supposed to go in and walked away from Faye. He didn’t see her expression and didn’t turn around to see it. Bird walked into the kitchen and hoped Faye didn't his guts.

Bird walked into the kitchen. Faye quickly followed, and was quite angry at the kiss. The fact that she saved his life was beside the point. The point was that he kissed her without even getting her consent. Faye was angry. She was really angry...

Faye entered the Mess, noticing no one from the Flame army there yet. 'Oh well,' she thought. She grabbed her food and sat down at an empty table, making up a random song (a pastime of hers) about the Holocaust; for that was her last unit at her old school...

"Let's see, what should be the chorus lines?" Faye wondered quitely to herself, as it formulated in her mind, "I'll try this for size...

Was it the Aryan pride,
Or the Aryan guide,
That led us to be so wrong?
.:Repeat verse:.
I don't know...(I just don't know)"

Meanwhile, the food sits, forgotten, in front of her.

She sat at some remote corner and started chewing offhandedly the spaghetti on her plate.

Faye kept noticing again and again that Bird hadn't come to enough to walk yet. Not only that, but she just noticed that she was offhandedly stabbing her food. "Ah, whatever, I can't eat; I'm going back to check on Bird." Faye said. She disposed of her food and set off.

Jab entered the mess-hall. Just in time.. it took him 3 more minutes to get there from the Flame Barracks, being stopped at several points by either Flame soldiers asking something, or people he knew - and that knew him and knew he was iced. He was starting to get sick of the ever-repeating - or so it seemed - question of "Jab! Weren't you iced?!" It was getting tiresome.

Entering the mess-hall he did spot some Flame uniforms. Having not won any battle yet, he shared a mess-hall with his soldiers. So, he did what any proper commander would do. He hid from them the best he could, praying they won't notice him. Or perhaps that they will not care. Either way, he wanted his quiet 15 minutes for eating.

He was just starting on his dinner, when he felt a hand upon his shoulder. Great, he thought bitterly. What now?! But a familiar, even welcomed voice, came to his ears.
"So, Jabal-san, may I sit down?"

Diana, the former Toon B leader of Tide, sat in front of him, not waiting for his approvel. He didn't mind - Diana was fun to talk to, amusing most of the time, generally a good spirit - though somewhat self-absorbed, and they shared a lot together. They shared Tide. They shared Dal. Right now, it was enough for him.

Diana. Tall, thin, long, black hair tied neatly behin her head, a constant sneer on her face. The Japanese girl was obviuosly not named Diana: born as Saito Hiromi, she was called Diana by her fellow Battle School students because she was "as beautiful as a goddess, as quick as a huntress." She now stared at him, interested.

"Rumour had it you were back here. It's a wonder - the day you left, Farrell-sama was furious. I never saw that mad before - or again, for that matter. You're in Flame now?" Diana herself was wearing Dragon uniforms - but she was a Toon Leader there for the past 6 months, ever since her transfer from Tide. Sometimes it seemed like a differnet life.

"Yeah," he acknowledged shortly. "They gave me Flame. Farrell just wants to see me fall."
Diana laughed.
"I have to admit I was hoping they'd put you in command of Dragon - Scott-san graduated yesterday. You'd have been the closest commander to Dal-sempai I could ever get."

Jab sighed to this. He wasn't Dal. He wasn't anything near Dal. He was grateful Diana believed in him so - he respected the girl and respected her opinion, as well. But he knew he was a long way off from being as good a commander as Dal.

Diana kept on talking to, switching to different matters.
"Everyone keeps on guessing who's that high-ranking officer you're relaetd to that managed to get you back. Some even claim it's Chamrajnagar-sama!" She gave him an amused glance, then burst in full laughter. "Oh, Jab-san, you really have to see your face right now!"

Finishing his noodles, he gave a quick glance at the clock on the wall and gave Diana an apologetic smile. "Hey, look, I gotta run. See you soon." He got up and left, leaving the black-haired girl sitting behind.
"Yes, Jab-san," she mumbled. "See you soon."

Leon had been sitting much like his commander had, not near anyone from Flame, nor anyone he talked to.

Jabal stared up at the clock and began to leave, Leon was really just sitting there so he began to follow his commander, he knew about Jab's history at the battleschool fairly well, so he also knew that the boy was iced. Everyone else was probobly wondering how the boy who was iced came back to command flame, hah, sounds funny, they put him in flame to melt his ice. He walked up behind the boy and tapped him on the shoulder.

"So... why did they bring you back, and more importantly, why did they bring you back to Flame ?

ooc - no prob. technically jab was s'posed to already have left the mess-hall, but i wanna give everyone a bit more taime before starting practice so why not [Smile]

Jab felt another tap on his shoudler. Diana, still having something to say? He looked around with a smile - but, no, it was a Flame soldier. Damn! He almost got away. he didn't really want to see his army at the moment. But the kid seemed harmless, so he smiled at him as he asked his question.

Of course. His icing. It seemed the entire bloody Schhol knew! And, obviously, the entire bloody School did know. A kid getting back after icing was a big deal. Especially Jab, who was known to most soldiers as Jab's Toon A Leader. Even these little kids kenw about it.

But he was one of his soldiers, and Jab wasn't going to spill his heart in front of a sabordinate. Nor was he going to tell him things that were not meant for telling. For that he had his friends here. He was quite certain that whatever he said, it would reach teh rest of Flame soon enough.

"I don't know myself, to be honest. I think someone decided Farrell has made a mistake." He didn't know if this kid was aware of the scene in Farrell's office, after the lights-out, after they caught Silk in Tide Barracks, Jab helping him to hide. How angry Farrell was! He didn't care too much, though - it would have been best if the story didn't circulate all through the School - too many soldiers knew it, already.

He also wasn't going to offer any ideas about who that someone was. For one thing, he had no diea who the senior officer who interferred on his behalf was; for another, it wasn't really safe to speculate. He'd just leave it at that. If the Flame soldier would let him.

Mick wandered into the mess hall and looked around. He noticed a few other flame uniforms including his commander talking to another soldier, but the clock on the wall showed that he didn't have much time. He grabbed a plate of food and sat at a table without seeing who was sitting near him and began to bolt his food as quickly as he could. He was nearly finished when he realized he wasn't even sure what he had eaten. Philosophically he was opposed to eating right before physical excercise, but he was not prepared to miss a meal, with out convincing himself of the need to. Besides he'd be the slowest guy out there in practice anyway, at least he could eat before he made a fool of himself.

He saw a few Flame soldiers eating and sat down amongst them, turning to the nearest he said: "Hi I'm Mark, just transferred into Flame."

"Hey Faye, what's up, and who's this newby?"

Mark smiled at the girl, she was pretty enough; about his age, maybe a little older.

He sensed someone coming up behind him before they spoke: "Hey Faye, what's up, and who's this newbie?"
Mark disliked the tone in their voice, he sensed some unfocused agression and turned round, the boy was younger than him with red hair and a distinctive birth mark on his neck. Still, at least he knew Faye's name now.
"Oh, hey Bird! This is Mark; I just met him. He just got here and is in the Flame Army too!"

Bird? He wondered how someone got a nickname like Bird.
"Ho Bird" he said: "Why don't you pull up a chair, join us," Mark knew he shouldn't tease with people he didn't know but he hated the idea that someone younger than him would have the gall to describe him as a newbie, the word was just too close to Launchie.

Leon paused for a minute, "You know this is their last resort training. This is the hell for us, but for you, you get another chance to start. But if you're going to keep BSing about things like that because you're too afraid to face your own soldiers, I don't know if I can trust you to be a commander, more over, I don't know if I can trust you at all," he said coldly, walking away.

Jack came into the Mess and sat down at the Dragon table. He looked around but didn't immediately see anyone he knew. He was alone for now. He hated being alone, it allowed him to think and he hated thinking. His thoughts always went back to the same topic: The day his parents died. The same 5 questions always came up.

Who was the stranger who killed them?
What was that person doing there?
Where did he come from?
Why did the man kill his parents?
How did Jack survive?

Answers he didn't think would ever be answered. Jack put his heads in his hands then remembered that he was hungry. He got up, got some food and came back. He sat there wallowing in his own haunting thoughts waiting for someone to come and break them.

"I was wondering where you were," Troy replies, glad that Indiana wasn't going into detail. He doesn't sit down, just grabs some foods of choice from his tray and throws the rest away. "You'd better eat quickly; we have practice in four minutes," he continues, mouth full.

And with that, he ran outside.

Indiana unbelievingly stared at Troys back as he quickly wondered away.
"Four minutes?!" he whispered.
He looked at his tray and walked over to the machine that took emty trays. He shoved his food into it, mad at not getting to taste it.
"This food is specifically suited for you." the machine said in a metallic voice.
"Shove a cork in it." Indiana frowned.
"You need to eat more of this food." The machine continued.
Indiana walked away. Jabal sure did have a way of making his army hate him.
Indiana decided that, this guy was either a genios.. or a total wacko.
He sauntered out of the mess hall and back to the barracks. He needed to get ready for his first battle.

Balin jogged through the halls, ignoring the taunts of "Dragon, your ass is draggin'!" that came from soldiers from other armies. He had been in Dragon long enough to tune them out.

He made his way into the mess and scanned the room for any Dragons who might already be there. Jack was the only one, sitting alone at a table in the corner. He ventured through the meal line, exchanging pleasant nothings with the kitchen staff who served it up, and grabbed a carton of orange juice at the end. Twisting his way through the maze of tables and chairs, he ambled over to the back table.

"Hey, Jack-o!" Balin called pleasantly. He always felt a little bad for the kid; he seemed so sad all the time. Maybe now was his chance to find out why, and maybe to cheer him up a little, too. "What do you think of the delicious breakfast with which we have been provided this fine morning? That is, if it even is morning. Seeing as there aren't any windows, nor any way of contacting the outside world, the sun could have been sucked into a black hole for all we can tell." He grinned broadly, knowing full well the impossible implausibilities of his theory, as well as the fact that it's always morning somewhere, so that the whole topic turned out to be completely moot.

Done with his pointless ramble, Balin grinned again at Jack and stuck a spoon straight up in the mushy gray stuff the staff called oatmeal, then pulled his hand away and watched as the spoon... did nothing. He shoveled some brown sugar into the mess and ruthlessly hack at the lump until it was soft enough to allow him to break off a mouth-sized chunk. "Yeah, nothing like a big bowl of oatmeal in the morning! It really sticks to your ribs, it does."

Jack heard Balin coming into the mess. Jack turned around and saw him coming towards him after getting some food.

"Hey, Jack-o" He called.

Jack had always like Balin. He was obnoxious in an ammusing sort of way. Jack waved at him and Balin came and sat down.

"What do you think of the delicious breakfast with which we have been provided this fine morning?" He said. "That is, if it even is morning. Seeing as there aren't any windows, nor any way of contacting the outside world, the sun could have been sucked into a black hole for all we can tell."

Jack chuckled at this. That was Balin for you, rambling as usual. Balin shoved his spoon into his oatmeal, or the so-called oatmeal, he wasn't sure if that was in fact what it was. For all he knew it could be grey glue. Very bland but hey, it was better than the scraps he had to eat on the street. Now those had flavor but he didn't want to think about why that was.

"Yeah, nothing like a big bowl of oatmeal in the morning! It really sticks to your ribs, it does."

"Well, it's better than nothing." said Jack. I should know. He thought and took another spoonful of his oatmeal/glue. He turned back to Balin. "So, what do you think of our newest commander? Think she'll actualy take us out of the hole we're in?"

Katriana arrived at the Mess Hall with a bang. She ambled through the line.

"Prettier and prettier every day," The young man at the counter smiled at her. "No kiss today, Kat?"

"Maybe if you lost a couple pounds," She snapped, and took her tray and carton of milk. She found an isolated seat in the corner, and pulled out her desk. She always read during meals- reading was a sure sign, she found, of not wanting to be disturbed. Usually, people stayed away when she was reading.

But today, she couldn't even keep her mind on Cervantes.

She pushed the desk away, picked at her food a little bit, and then pushed her tray away and buried her face in her hands.

"Well, yeah, anything's better than nothing." Balin stared meditatively at his bowl for a moment. "But still, what I wouldn't give for a heaping plate of mango right about now. And kahvah. I can think of no better breakfast than kahvah and mango." He could almost taste the sweet, succulent yellow fruit and the salty tea as he said it. He sighed then shrugged and dug back in, washing the oatmeal down with big swigs of orange juice. "How about you? What's your favorite breakfast from back home?"

Tree meandered in, grabed every possible peice of food he could ram on his tray, sneaking a few more morsels when his alloted portion was already served them...looking remorsefully at the meager amount he cheered himself up with the thought that perhaps there would be some leftovers from some other army members, usually someone would give him the rest of what the didnt eat...as much as Tree did eat he seemed to gain no weight, only height I swear I will never stop growing! he thought with some worry for already he stood out as being taller than practically everyone at the school and the lankness did nothing to help curb his kluz tendencies....

Scanning the tables he saw Balin and Jack and started toward them when he also saw the ice queen in a corner with her head in her hands- despite the fact that he always got his head ripped off in any conversation tree still always felt sorry for her to be that angry all the time she must have had a terrible time at some point He starred at her for a moment before giving a sigh at his idiocy- she would probably eat him alive for even asking but....

"Katrina do you want to join us?" he gave her an apprasing look and realized that as usual she had been reading, "Not that I want to disturb you or anything" He hastily amended- Tree had always been a little afraid of the ice queen, he swore the girl could faitally stab you with her eyes....

Quickly he moved on to the table with Balin and Jack, heck maybe the ice queen would unlikely enough take him up on the offer... and took a seat next to jack across from Balin "miss me boys?" He asked in his typical trademark greeting.

Kat looked up at Tree's voice. "Katriana, do you want to join us?" He'd asked. The offer took her so much by surprise that she responded with hostility before even thinking about it.

"No, thank you," She said, giving them a Look that said, I know you're only pretending to be nice to me- don't think you can fool me. She returned back to Tolstoy, even though she couldn't read a word of it, and kept on rereading the same sentence over and over again.

Stupid, stupid stupid, Katriana thought, You complain to yourself about not having any friends and then the minute someone's nice to you, you're Miss Ice Queen again . . .

Jack noticed Tree walk in even before he came into sight. He saw how the people who were leaving looked up quite a bit and knew it could only be one person. Once Tree did walk in he stood out in the crowded mess hall like a sore thumb. Jack turned back to Balin and plopped some glumeal on the table and spread it around. He then put his bowl on top of it and pushed into the glumeal. Tree started to come towards them but then veered off and went over to Kat.

"Katriana, do you want to join us?" Then without waiting for an answer he quickly moved over to where Jack and Balin were sitting. "Miss me boys?" He said.

Jack smiled at this and turned back to what he was doing. "Hey, Tree" He said. "What do you guys think are the chances that the janitors will have to pry this bowl off the table with a crowbar?"

Javil walked slowly into the Mess. He couldn’t stand noise, and there was a lot in there. People chatting about irrelevant matters, kids yelling, proud to be the first ones in the scoreboard, as if that was something important. Well, it was. After all, the scoreboard ruled over them. It was the principle director of their lives. It determined how much you valued, how much efficient you were, how you were treated by the rest of armies. If you were at the top, then you’d be feared, respected, envied. If you were at the bottom, then you’d be rejected, mocked, ridiculed. Dragon was there. But Javil couldn’t see that name, the only name he could see at the bottom of the scoreboard, at the bottom of the panel that represented his success, was his own name.
It might be an egoistical point of view, since the others were part of Dragon just as himself, and they might feel just as frustrated as him, but after all their talks in the barracks, Javil knew he was the one that hated the most to be in this situation, or at least, one of those who hated it the most.

After taking his tray, without even bothering to look to the kitchen staff, he scanned the room, looking for a place to seat. He had two options: The first one was to seat with the team of buffoons, who’d be surely joining the whole of battle school’s brainless soldiers which most important chat subject was the food or their useless jokes. The second option wasn’t that great either, the Ice Queen. Well, she would probably yell something at him, but if he ignored her, she would end up getting bored, and then shut up. That way he wouldn’t have to hear any dumb things, and he’d enjoy his meal in peace. He walked towards her, sat in front of her, and started eating.

After some minutes without saying anything at all, he observed her, and asked: "What're you reading?"

Kat sighed inwardly. What was it today with people trying to be nice to her? She considered ignoring whoever it was that had spoken to her, but when she saw that it was the pessimist, Javil, she decided to respond.

"Cervantes, Don Quixote. In Spanish." She said shortly, glancing at him, then back at her desk, though she still wasn't absorbing a word of what she was reading. "I can't absorb a word of it. Too much noise in here. And Don Quixote is crazy." She mumbled.

She wasn't used to holding conversations- she couldn't remember the last time she'd had a real one. It felt odd, sort of like . . . sort of like she was learning a new language and trying it out. She almost wished that Javil would leave her alone. The almost bit surprised her. Maybe she didn't mind him as much as she minded the other kids, who she thought were . . . well, too 'happy'. But then, he wasn't exactly the best company to have, either, being such a gloomy kid.

But . . . she glanced at him again, when she thought he might not be looking. Maybe he'd been through something that'd made him so disgruntled, sort of like what she'd been through that made her an Ice Queen. Or maybe not. Maybe he was just a pessimist.

"You ever read any Tolstoy?" She asked, surprising herself.

"You ever read any Tolstoy?" asked the girl, who hadn’t yelled nor sent him away yet, and that was pretty strange.
“No.” He answered. And then he didn’t say anything else.
What could he add? He had never had a conversation with Kat. He didn’t know what were her interests, nor the things she didn’t like. Well, he didn’t know much about the others either. They used to spend their days making jokes and such, that’s all he knew about them. And the only thing he knew about Kat was her nickname. But he had never thought about the reasons that had led her to earn that nickname. The truth is he didn’t really care about her, just as he didn’t care about anyone, but comparing her to the rest of the army, she looked like the only one with a brain.

The silence was the only thing they shared for some seconds. He nodded a couple of times, and then stopped. Oh, come on... he thought, before giving back some life to the chat:
“Umm...” He glanced at her again, and added: “I’ve tried many times, but... I’ve never finished. I’ve used it as a somniferous, though.”
He didn’t mean it like a joke. It was true. But he then realized that it was a funny thought, and chuckled. It was something he hadn’t done in ages, he was always too busy thinking about his own misfortune. He had almost laughed, but he didn’t do it because he couldn't remember how to.
He looked at her and smiled. Was it something spontaneous or had faked it because this was the normal thing to do? He didn’t really care. The smiles had been locked in his past, next to his memories, and bringing them back wouldn’t harm anyone.

He didn’t know if she would find it funny or not, but it would be the same to him. He wasn’t really sure to be smiling for her. He was smiling for himself. There still was a bit of light in his darkness. But sadly, he knew it wouldn’t last.

((OOC: Oops, I didn't see you had changed the title. Umm... Sorry to ask this, could you just put Tolstoy back instead of Shakespeare? Javil wouldn't use Shakespeare as a somniferous, and that would change all my post.))

<OOC- sorry! I only changed it from Tolstoy because I realized after I posted that I'd never read any of his works, so I wouldn't have had any idea what I was talking about, whereas, on the other hand, I have read both Cervantes and Shakespeare- though in English, not Spanish [Wink] >

Kat found herself giggling at Javil's comment, and tried to make herself stop. But she found that the harder she tried to stop, the harder she giggled. At last she picked up her carton of milk and took a swallow from it, as a last step towards ending the cursed giggles.

And sprayed it all over the table.

"I'm sorry!" She gasped. All her giggles were gone now. "I- I'm not used to laughing, I think." She finished lamely, and began wiping the table without another word, her cheeks burning.

Balin's eyes widened in disbelief as he heard Jack's answer. "Never... had mango...?" This was something beyond comprehension. The salt tea, he could understand, most white people, heck most Indian people outside of Kashmir preferred their Lipton chai, and in some places, people bypassed the tea completely and went for coffee. But mango? How could someone claim to have lived without tasting mango? The king of fruits, practically the national fruit of India... He shook his head. "Someday we'll have to find a way to fix this deficiency of yours."

Tree trotted up just then and slid into his seat beside Jack. Balin noticed with interest that Tree's tray seemed more than usually full. "What do you guys think are the chances the janitors will have to pry this off the table with a crowbar?" Jack piped up, having skillfully glued his bowl down with gray oatmeal paste.

Balin grinned, then poked and prodded at the bowl. "I think they may just have to throw the whole table out." He glanced down at his own "gluemeal" and scraped the remainder into Tree's bowl. "You can have this, but I'm taking your biscuit." He snatched the roll from Tree's tray, then hastily smeared it with margarine and jam and stuffed it into his mouth to prevent Tree from taking it back.
