Wow, I just came on here not too long ago, and it seems like everyone knows each other. I'm a 17 year old girl living in Ohio... but I have no idea who anyone else is! How do I manage to get to know people? [Confused] [Confused]

Tinros... it's like real life.. just slower. It takes time to get to know everyone, their names, their personalities.

Have you ever been on a BBS before?

Tinros, we all know you. We've been watching you for some time. We have judged that now you are worthy to be among us. Soon you, too, will discover you can see into the mind of every person who has ever read a book I wrote. We are trying to expand this ability to allow reading the mind of anyone who has ever read a book at all. And someday: Everyone who can read.

Run, Tinros. Get as far away from this place as you can, as quickly as you can!

Save yourself while there's still time.

No, I've never been on a BBS. I'm just really lost trying to figure all of this out. I'm really the only major OSC fan of my age that I know in my area, and I'm a little dazed.

Just give it a little time. I'm 15, I joined in April, and I'm still learning. Read posts, respond, and relax. Already people know you (although you might not know them) just from your posts on this thread.

The only difference between forums and real life is that you can think about what you say a little longer than usual. (In theory of course) This is at the cost of seeing expressions, though emoticons are pretty cool [Smile] .

Speaking of emoticons - the traditional ones like [Smile] - is there a standard one for puking? It came up in an email correspondence just a few minutes ago.

Nope...doesn't look like it.

Tinros, I am a seventeen year old female from Southern California. I am LDS and I love to sing, read, write, act, and basically be crazy. I rant about the so-called "individual anti-commercialist punks" at my school because they laugh at anyone who is a little bit different (I'm basically a hippie without the drugs and sex; my best friend is an anarchist that knows anarchy will never work and therefore is looking into ideal socialism.) and these "punks" cry when their fathers won't gett them the brand new IPod mini because they already own one. My mom says that I march to the beat of a rather strange drum that no one else can hear...but that she likes the way I describe the beat. I put everything I have to help those I love. I want to help everyone and do whatever I can. I want to be a film director or an advanced English teacher when I grow up and therefore will be doing a double major in both.

And now you have me in a nutshell. I'm a rather open book...

Ok: Name's Erin, I go to Springboro(in between dayton and cinci), I love music(first chair flute, section leader for pit percussion during marching band- can't march, bad knees), I read A LOT(favorites- OSC, of course, and Terry Brooks, also the His Dark Materials trilogy). I plan on going to Ohio State fall of '06, as a major in mechanical engineering. um... I can't say I enjoy long walks on the beach, cuz I've never been there... but anyway, I'm happily... dating. Too young for that whole marriage thing. Anyway, music has pretty much taken all of my time(marching band in the fall/winter, winter percussion in the winter/spring, then summer rehearsals for marching band start in June), but I'll be done with that May 20. I'm counting the days, trust me. umm... anything else you want to know, just ask me. I'm open for emails too- ask me for my address if you want it.

I'm fairly new meself, so I'd probably benefit by an introduction as much as you, Tinros! Nice to meet you, btw. I'm an English major in the middle of nowhere, upstate NY, which I absolutely love. I'm Catholic. My passions are Arthurian legend (the classic stuff - Geoffrey of Monmouth, Chretien de Troyes, the French Vulgate Cycle, Malory, etc), ice cream (I think about the subtleties of ice cream a lot more than most people), Gilbert and Sullivan, and writing. I have a few rough drafts under my belt, and I hope to be a published author someday, possibly with a job as an English professor to pay the bills, although at some point I want to get married and be a stay-at-home mom. I'm a total geek - I love fantasy and sci-fi, I dabble in classic comics, and I watch a healthy amount of anime. As far as what I like to read, OSC ranks way way up there of course (favorite currently living author), Arthurian stuff, C.S. Lewis, Neil Gaiman, Lloyd Alexander, JRR Tolkien, etc. Also, I'm very conservative (the very emphasizing my views, not my amount of political activism, which is basically none), but somehow most of my friends are raging Democrats. I'm one of those people who thinks out loud (which is talking to yourself, but sane [Wink] ), and I have a tendency to burst into song at random intervals. I ooze the three CHs (charm, charisma, and chutzpah). (And I'm modest too! [Razz] ) My favorite OSC book is Ender's Game (with Speaker a close second).

Well gull durn, I might as well hop on the "I'm new so I'll introduce myself" bandwagon. I'm a 25 year old California boy, live at the beach, Port Hueneme, I'm a security guard by night, going to be going to ITT tech in a few months, enjoy getting dressed up and hitting my friends with swords (otherwise known as the SCA), reading, gaming (with real and pixel people), I collect weapons and books, I have a big mouth and a quirky sense of humor, an eclectic taste in music and generally dress in black sleeveless tees and BDU shorts. Long walks on the beach are okay too.

Stone Wolf I just welcomed in another thread he started.

Welcome to the rest of you! : wave:

Tinros, it takes time to develop relationships. I made mistakes of my own getting to know Hatrack (this is an understatement, trust me!!)

Just go with the flow. It takes time, and it's different from normal interpersonal relationships. I've heard it said (often) that normal human interaction is 80% non-verbal--assuming that's true, it puts internet relationships at a distinct disadvantage. We try to get around that in a piece-meal manner with AIM messages, e-mail, phone calls, and the occasional face-to-face meetings, but basically forum's are new form of human interaction, and your generation will have to deal with it. Good luck!! (sincerely meant, not ironic)

Sounds like your dreading another year devoted to band. Don't take me wrong, I envy your talent with music, yet you seem to be looking forward to when your commitment to some program is through, and don't seem to be looking forward to your senior year in HS for that reason?

Perhaps you're devoted to music but not the program??

Guess I'd better hop on too before the bandwagon leaves! I'm a 24 year old theatre girl - technically, a dramaturgy grad student working on my MFA. I just moved to Long Island, NY, a year ago from the vast cornfields and sprawling suburbia of Illinois. I'll be teaching my first class ever this fall, which I'm both terrified of and excited about. When people meet me in person, I tend to be reserved and do more thinking than talking, but once I get comfortable with people, I have a rather satirical sense of humor. And besides theatre and performing arts, my passions include collecting a magpie assortment of knowledge (mostly history), traveling, reading lots of fiction (mainly fantasy, and of course OSC), and scheming to manipulate my career so I ultimately end up living in the UK. Yeah, I don't enjoy marching band because of one of my instructors being a real jerk... that's why I'm not doing winter percussion again. However, my senior year itself is going to be great. Physics, French 5, Music Theory, Calculus... It's going to be awesome. Yes, I'm incredibly passionate about music... but I'm going to be a mechanical engineer. Fancy that.
