This just reminded me of Ender's monitor, and I had to post it here.

I think we are actually really close to some of the tech in the Enderverse (maybe even less than 100 years away). It's kind of scary when you think about it.

I'd say that the only Enderverse tech that's far beyond our reach at the moment are interstellar space flight, the Little Doctor, and the Ansible, all of which came at least indirectly from contact with the formics.

If Moore's Law continues long enough, those may not be all THAT far off...maybe less than a hundred years.

We don't yet have even a theoretical basis for the Ansible. Biological immortality (agelessness) is much more likely to come within our century, but I wouldn't bet on faster-than-light communication.

The Little Doctor does exist now.

Wow, that was a waste of my time.

I'd say the programming on Jane is actually kind of far off now. I know theoretically, we basically have the programming knowledge to do it, but to actually do it in a practical sense, I don't see it happening soon.

I'm not so sure. I always thought the monitor actually picked up on brain waves and thoughts, not JUST the sights and sounds surrounding the person. After all, doesn't it say at the beginning of the book somewhere something like, "I'm not used to seeing his facial expressions, I'm used to feeling them." That seems to imply a level of neurological understanding and technology that I don't think we're even close to reaching!
