I hope this is the correct forum for such questions. I've looked around the internet for a possible answer, however, after not finding much I decided to come to the source.

I'd like to know if there is a foundational rule for the magic system in the Mithermage series. The best I can surmise is that a Mithermage could not summon something out of nothing. Near the end of The Gate Thief, Danny tells Wheeler that the magic isn't spells, it is more persuasion.

That leads me to the problem I'm running into. How, as a Fire Mage, is Bexsoi able to cause self immolation. Is she able to harness the power of the naturally occurring electricity in the human body? To me that is the only explanation -- if it is so, does that mean Danny's own mother and her affinity for electricity allows her to do the same?

I know this might sound dumb and over thought, but I'm really trying to get my head around the system and where there may be overlap.

Hmmm.

Never thought of that.

From what I recall, the mage "works with" what's already there in general-- the stone-mages work with existing stone, seamages on the water already in the sea, etc.

With Bexoi I was thinking that it's not just "fire" that she's working with, it's "light"-- wasn't "lightrider" something like that? Just like Ced could use wind carrying dust to slice through rock if it is focused and strong enough, maybe Bexoi can focus and strengthen light to the point of burning a specific thing.

I dunno, lmao.

Maybe, but the description seems to indicate it started within the body and burned outward. Would love a companion book or site describing the archtypes and their sub types
