Ooh, good question! OSC has been very diplomatic but positive about the film, and I'm very curious if that's 1) contractual, 2) going to continue until the film comes out (and hopefully not after [Smile] ?

Is that an opinion that can be quoted in other places, or would you prefer it to be kept to this thread?

Also, thanks for letting us know! It's nice to have a place (so far) that isn't quite disappointed about the trailer in the forums.

How do you guys feel about the final shot with the planet? Do you think it gives away too much? Personally, I think it's fine for people who haven't read the book, but fans of the series might be annoyed.

I can't wait for November!

Yes, I was a bit annoyed. Though perhaps I shouldn't be - as people say - if you haven't read the book, it's not really a spoiler, it's just a boom - and it's good to know it'll be in the film.

Also, I'm so extremely thrilled that the Ender and Valentine scene at the lake is in the film (at least in the trailer) - that kind of scene would only get in the film if they really wanted to be respectful to the book, and not if they wanted to conform to Hollywood action cliches. [Smile]

I think it was a mistake. People who haven't read the book don't know about it now, but many of them are going to figure it out during the movie, at the very least in the last battle scene where Ender is presented with a seemingly impossible fight and he hasn't blown up a planet like they've seen in the trailers. Even if it doesn't give away that it's not just training (and I believe that for many people it will), it's still going to kill any suspense as to how he's going to win.

Also, if the bit in the trailer is as it was filmed, the emotional tone of the scene is very wrong. This wasn't a "Heck Yeah!" moment done by a resolute Ender.

I'm not convinced Asa was projecting "Heck yeah!" It's hard to tell, but my impression was more intense seriousness, that might be commensurate with the desperation he felt in the novel.

When I saw the planet explode, my jaw dropped. Like... you're going to just give away the ending?

But, hopefully non-readers won't remember it.

Well, apparently people who haven't read the book have no clue what's going on.

I remember the Avengers trailer, where they spoiled the ending in regards to Iron Man. So spoiling endings is definitely a stupid trailer thing that doesn't necessarily mean the movie will be bad.

Just saw the trailer at Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Unfortunately, all my previously stated fears were confirmed. I was screaming at the screen. My wife has not had such an adverse reaction to a trailer since the awful bastardization that was I, Robot. I will have to find someone else to take me to the movie due to my disabilities. They didn't do this much harm to Jumper.

This is the wife: When the trailers inform you that the movie has departed from the book in fundamental ways, you need to decide if you will vote with your money for future assaults on your sensibilities or if you will drop the hubby off at Ender's Game and go watch another movie.

I will be very interested to see if the ways the trailer seems to indicate the movie will depart from the book are actually ways the movie departs from the book. [Smile]

That... I didn't see much of the plot of the movie at all. Mostly just shots of the Academy Award Nominated/Winning cast... seems like they were pimping the cast much more than the plot, so, too soon to tell.

Well, I mean, everyone is aged up but we knew that already.

I'm extremely excited too, Kelly! I just started my reread of the book (I'm hoping to read every Ender book and short story in the six months we have between now and the movie). It's just as good as I remember, though wow the first and second chapter are amazing foreshadowing I've never caught before.

I have to admit, the first two times I watched the trailer, I didn't even see the planet exploding near the end. So, I'm not particularly worried about it being a spoiler, since I might be surprised if most people even remember it from the trailer at all.

In general though, it's a bit like showing the Death Star exploding at the end of the trailer for Star Wars or something. I found it odd.

Just popped my head in to say my son works at a movie theater and as an employee contest prize, he just won an Ender's Game one-sheet! How cool is it to have a movie poster already? [Big Grin]

Now, I just need to find a place where Scott is doing a signing and get the one-sheet signed!

Amazing Trailer! I've only waited for this for a decade and and a 1/2 .. LOL

I will have to wrap my mind around the characters being older than the written characters but I'm quite excited to see this and anticipating the release of the movie!

Yeah, he rarely, if ever, does signings anywhere near me either. But I'm in a fly-over state, so what are ya gonna do. He once did a signing near my parents though, so I do have a signed copy of a book they bought me. And he sent me a signed copy of a book once, but I've never gotten to meet him.

Great interview about the movie, OSC's involvement, and the Ender's Game Alive audio drama.

http://universe.byu.edu/2013/07/16/1orson-scott-card-praise-for-work-of-enders-game-director-movie-executives/

What he said about the core of Ender's Game, and how he translated it to the audio drama, makes me EVEN MORE excited about that.

The audio drama news is really comforting to me. Even if the movie disappoints, we'll still have the audio drama. It will be interesting to compare Hood's and Card's different approaches to adapting the novel to a medium where you can't, as they say, "get in the character's head."

It's interesting how Card selects his words to describe the film. In the interview, he says he has seen a rough cut, which is a significant step up from when last we heard from him, when he said that he hadn't actually read the whole script, but rather trusted his family and friends to vet it and give him a report (something about blood pressure and referring to his stroke).

Now, having seen it, he chooses to use the words "sharp," "tight," and "emotional" to describe the movie. And he admits there are changes that "will annoy some fans," but that's true of any movie adaptation I've ever seen. Perhaps most tellingly, he says the movie contains "much of what works in 'Ender's Game'" (emphasis added). This begs the question of what that worked in the book was omitted in the movie.

I wonder if I'm one of the fans that will be annoyed by the changes. I like to think of myself as tolerant of pragmatic adaptation (after all, I survived all eight Harry Potter films), but Ender's Game is pretty dear to me. I'm trying to imagine what would be a dealbreaker. I'd probably put a romantic subplot at the top of that list.

That's pretty much my hope too, C3PO!

I'm really with you on the romantic subplot. I know I'm overreacting to the EW shots of Ender and Petra holding hands...but then I think back to Prince Caspian, when they threw the idiotic romance in there, and it was a huge secret because they knew how fans would react.

But OSC has been pretty up front about how a romance subplot is ridiculous in Ender's Game, so I'd hope that unless his NDAs are incredibly hardcore, he wouldn't refer to an added romance as "annoying."

There's a neat new survey you can take to be assigned to one of the four armies - Dragon, Asp, Rat, and Salamander (I got Asp!)

The video introduces the recruitment story, and has a link to the survey site.

Anybody see/read any of the cool Ender's Game film stuff coming out of Comic Con? The passion the cast and crew seem to have for the book is really hopeful, I think.

Also I'm interested in the speculation regarding who actually wrote this film. I'm perturbed that the Transformers guys might've penned it, but the screenplay credit goes to Gavin Hood. What's the deal?

Yay!

I'm a bit irked by Valentine's dumbed down "If you don't try, we all die" comment - Ender knew the stakes at the lake, it was helping to care about them and hope that his soul could be salvaged that was important. Maybe that's the point of the scene, and they just didn't have any context for "You're not like Peter."

Looks like Chamrajnagar will be in the film!

The formation for the final battle looks pretty good. And Mazer seems to have a Kiwi accent, quite appropriately (I don't know if it's a good one, though).

Still inist on putting the ending in the trailer, though.

Kind of odd, that the portion of the book I always found most boring (where Ender commands the fleets and saves the world) is the exciting action-packed portion that the trailers constantly show off. In fact, I think showing actual fleets flying around as Ender commands is the bigger spoiler. Based off of the footage we're seeing in the trailers, I'm having a hard time imagining that they'll pull off the big surprise in the movie.

And I second that orchestra comment.

I think what most of the people following the movie have speculated is that we, the audience, will know the truth - the impact at the end will be seeing Ender's reaction to learning it.

So for all the complaints about showing the world blowing up at the end as a spoiler, has no one noticed that the poster has "This is not a game" printed across the middle of it! Talk about spoilers, they just gave away the whole thing.

It's no speculation, millernumber1. The fact that Ender's "game" is not actually a game is revealed to the audience very early. There is no surprise twist in this version of the script.

New clips - and they allay the fears raised by the trailer that the final battle will be a "heck yeah" moment, since the "NOW" shout is from a different section.

Recruiting Ender: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFnrG4WvzQo

Ice Battle (with "NOW"): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYsZMzsnpjA

Mazer berates Ender for losses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohU8bFaOVF0

I am heartened by these clips!
