Introduce this ancient water ,
The smell of dirt, nature's sad refrain.
Reintroduce two things that really matter
And all of the corresponding pain.

Introduce the birds that fly,
The rain and snow that fumble to the ground.
Reintroduce the questions why
Storms are blowing all around.

Over time, over distance,
Over hills so far and wide,
Overjoyed with mere existence,
Since you've come to life.

"Come to Life" (Jeb Puryear)

If I could throw this
Lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you walk, walk away
Into the night
And through the rain
Into the half-light
And through the flame

-U2, in my favoritest U2 song ever - Bad

(p.s. MattB - there's a band called Alphaville? That is my favoritest foreign film ever! Are they good?)

Love Is A Burning Thing
And It Makes A Fiery Ring
Bound By Wild Desire
I Fell Into A Ring Of Fire

CHORUS:
I Fell Into A Burning Ring Of Fire
I Went Down, Down, Down
And The Flames Went Higher

"Ring of Fire"

written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore
performed by Johnny Cash

You're out on the town, safe in the crowd
Ready to go for the ride
Searching the eyes, looking for clues
There's no way you can hide
The fire inside

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, "The Fire Inside"

About Alphaville: Like the film, European, but German rather than French. Kind of like a German Depeche Mode. They appeared in 1981, and everything about them screams the fact, from the techno-dance music to the circa-1987 Billy Idol look. You've probably heard "Forever Young" or "Big in Japan," and now you know the band. The key album is also titled "Forever Young," and was released in 1984, but they're admirably still working.

The fox went out on a chilly night,
He prayed for the moon to give him light,
For he'd many a mile to go that night,
Before he reached the town -o, town -o, town -o,
He'd many a mile to go that night,
Before he reached the town -o.

This is the night
Of the expanding the man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be

I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whisky all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

The candle burning over your shoulder is throwing
Shadows on your saxophone , a surly lady in tremor.
The stars that climb from her bowels,
Those stars make towers on vowels.

Bitter taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out

You got to cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice

When Black Friday comes
I'll stand down by the door
And catch the grey men when they
Dive from the fourteenth floor
When Black Friday comes
I'll collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out
I'll be on the road
When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be
Don't let it fall on me

Monday you could fall apart.
Tuesday, Wednesday, break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start.
It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday waits,
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday never hesitates...

Be creative, people. No "Except For Monday", "Come Monday", "Ruby Tuesday", Tuesday's Gone", "Wednesday", "Friday", "Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting", "Sunday, Bloody Sunday", or "Easy Like Sunday Morning". [Wink]

Why does nobody ever sing about Thursday?!

Seven days, was all she wrote
A kind of ultimatum note, she gave to me
She gave to me
When I thought the field had cleared
It seems another suit appeared to challenge me
Woe is me
Though I hate to make a choice
My options are decreasing mostly rapidly
Well, we'll see
I don't think she'd bluff this time
I really have to make her mine
It's plain to see, it's him or me

Monday , I could wait till Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine
Thursday 's on my mind
Friday 'd give me time
Saturday could wait
But Sunday 'd be too late

Yes, everything is catching on fire
Everything's catching on fire
Everything is catching on fire
Everything's catching on fire

And the battle's just begun,
There's many lost, but tell me who has won?
The trenches dug within our hearts,
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn
apart.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.

How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, Tonight we can be as one.
Tonight, tonight.

You caught me lingering
In another girl's paradise
The way she paints the world --
I want that in my life
Emeralds, you should know,
Are renting in her meadow
With a stroke beauty lives
How could I resist
You are Desire

Get your ticket to that wheel in space
While there's time
The fix is in
You'll be a witness to that game of chance in the sky
You know we've got to win
Here at home we'll play in the city
Powered by the sun
Perfect weather for a streamlined world
There'll be spandex jackets one for everyone

On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
(More leisure time for artists everywhere)
A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision
We'll be clean when their work is done
We'll be eternally free yes and eternally young

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

You stung as if you knew I'd sting right there
And you shouldn't know these things about me

Abused as if your pain would quench my fear
How could you know these things about me

You shouldn't know these things
And be this awfully well intune
Go as if not aware
Be like those others that assume

You knew and still you managed to find my stare
And you shouldn't know these things about me

sky apart...

In my dream I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows, they learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me
Spilling over the brim
Waves of regret and waves of joy
I reached out for the one I tried to destroy
You...you said you'd wait
Until the end of the world

Forty Days & Forty Nights

It rained and rained just like cats and dogs
Drowning humans just like rats
Is a parable for an angry mob.
Joined a group for a militant peace
But violence as an issue was purely mute,
Laid around drinking tea
Waiting for God to tell us who to shoot.

With a love so real
Change the way you think and feel
With a love so strong
Flick the switch and turn me on.

With your life fully deployed
This kind of love can never be destroyed
In a dream so beautiful
Could you dare to be another miracle

Take me to the magic of the moment
On a glory night
Where the children of tomorrow dreamaway
In the winds of change

Walking down the street
Distant memories
Are buried in the past forever

I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

Beautiful rocks -- beautiful grass
Beautiful soil where they both combine
Beautiful river -- covering sky
Never thought of possession, but all this was mine

When you know even for a moment
That it's your time
Then you can walk with the power
Of a thousand generations

When you've got a dream like mine
Nobody can take you down
When you've got a dream like mine
Nobody can push you around

Hey what do you love more than love
Hey what do you love more than love
When you question what your desire is for
When you don't just figure that you just want more
Hey what do you love more than love
Hey what do you love more than love

Well I love the way the world is your garden
And you plant your seeds and you let them grow
And you take things out of the ground just like
You take what comes, but you never know

I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this : the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Oh, a man is placed upon the steps, a baby cries
And high above you can hear
The church bells start to ring
And as the heaviness, oh the heaviness, of the body settles in
Somewhere you can hear a mother sing
Then it's one foot then the other
As you step out onto the road of hope
Step out on the road
How much weight? how much?
Then it's how long? and how far?
And how many times oh, before it's too late?

Calling all angels, calling all angels
Walk me through this one
Don't leave me alone
Calling all angels, calling all angels
We're tryin' and we're hopin'
But we're not sure how this goes

Why do all the rules I make
About how to act around other people
Like don't write them private notes
Trying to explain your foolish actions
Like not hanging around
For hours after it's obvious
That your presence ain't desired
Like names are not important
So if someone forgets your name
They're forgetting something intangible
That has nothing to do with you
So it's stupid to feel bad
If someone forgets your name
Why do all the rules I make
About how to act around other people
Always fall by the wayside
When I get around you

Just then he came upon a young man sawing on the fiddle
And playing it hot
The devil jumped up on a hickory stump and said
Boy, let me tell you what
I bet you didn't know it,
But I'm a fiddle player too
And if you'd care to take a dare
I'll make a bet with you
You play some pretty good fiddle, son
But give the devil his due
I'll bet a fiddle of gold
Against your soul
'Cause I think I'm better than you.

Why won't you ever be glad? it melts into wonder
Well I came in praying for you
Why won't you run in the rain and play?
Let the tears splash all over you.

The ants go marching one by one
hurrah, hurrah
the ants go marching one by one
hurrah, hurrah
the ants go marching one by one
the little one stopped to go for a run and
they all go marching down,
to the ground,
to get out of the rain, rain, rain, rain...

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do.
Two can be as bad as one--
It's the loneliest number since the number one.

No is the saddest experience you'll ever know
Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know

'Cause one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
One is the loneliest number, whoa-oh, worse than two

It's just no good anymore since you went away
Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday

One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

One is the loneliest
One is the loneliest
One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

"It's funny how life turns out
the odds of faith in the face of doubt
Camera ONE closes in
the soundtrack starts, the scene begins

You're playing you now."
