I'm a seventh grade English teacher. I get to talk about reading and writing all the time.
I read a lot.
I talk to my husband a lot. We like to hang out.
(No, we don't have any kids yet. I understand that that changes.)
My husband and I also lead the youth group at our church. And it turns out that we really like the kids (as friends, not just youth) so we spend a lot of time with them.

I was just scanning through old posts and I thought this was interesting enought to bring back. I am still new here and am interested in what you people do when you're not here.
I am a bookseller at Barnes & Noble and a sometimes student thinking about becoming a nurse, but we shall see.

Thanks Farmgirl. I never make it to "the other side" so, I didn't even know that thread existed.

The other side's thread is long enough as to be unweildy, though, and after glancing at it, I can say that I've never seen a good number of those people post on this side, which to me is the heart of the forum. Nothing wrong with having such a thread on both sides.

I'm working as a network administrator, and have specialized in Lotus/Domino administration since about 1999 or so. Before that I was a vanilla NT admin for about a year. Before that I was learning how to be an NT admin. Before that I was doing data entry, grading papers, etc. Before that I was working as a temp at an H&R Block. Beofore that I was looking for a job in Thailand. Before that I was learning Thai in preparation for the job I had lined up in Thailand. Before that I was getting my MA in Teaching English as a Second Language. Before that I was getting my BA in Classical Antiquities.
Periodically, while doing the network admin stuff, I've taught ESL in community outreach programs.

And the other thing wrong with both the thread on the other side and this one, is that mostly the "old-timers" and those who are most regular, didn't ever post to it -- so newbies know very little about the people who post a lot.... (Like Papa Moose, Hobbes, Lalo, dkw, etc. etc)
Unless, of course, they mention their career in their profile..
Valentine, I was curious whether Barnes & Noble hires people at 16. Do you know? I don't care what I'd have to do or not do.

Actually, I was hired (the first time) at 16 and then I just recently went back to them at the age of 23. Go for it but be advised it took one of my friends 13 applications to finally get hired, so don't give up if you don't get a quick response. Good luck!

Okay. The reason I was wondering is that they sell PA CDs and R-rated movies and some unmentionables that only people in long raincoaats would buy, and I thought there might be a law against me handling such things, since it's illegal for me to buy them 'til I'm 17/18.
The one in Prescott is pretty new, and they often have certain stations unmanned. I think I could get accepted pretty readily if I can be hired at all.

I say, do it! I know selling R-rated movies is no big deal and as far as selling porno mags and copies of "High Times", it hasn't been an issue at my store. We card anyone who looks under 25 and try to keep the teenage boys away from the sex books. If you can handle that, they you're good to go!
And I hate to burst your bubble, but the people who buy "that kind of stuff" look just like everybody else....usually without the trenchcoats!

Oh, yeah, forgot about the PA cds-it's the same as with the magazines. 25 is just an age that most places use to judge on when to card. You'll notice that grocery stores use that age too when carding for alcohol. When in doubt-card. No one is really that hard up about it at my store but I'm sure it would depend on your state laws.

Ohh, and I fight criminal ignorance by avoiding the other guys on my dorm floor. In my spare time I try to do productive things like go to school at Purdue.
