This is something I have written recently based on what I understand about people. It can be applied to any situation in life and sometimes I even have a hard time grasping the trueness it embodies.
There are two paths that we each follow everyday. Both paths lie nevxt to each other. At any point we can instantly jump from one path to the other and we all do it constantly. One path is negative. One Path is positive. One path brings dispair. One path brings hope. One path leads to fear, pain, hurt, and loss. One path leads to love, goodness, justice, and holiness.
The negative path is very treacherous. It contains many pitfalls that destroy any hope of ever stepping off of it. It feeds on our fears and failures in order to keep us forever plodding, forever trapped on it. As we are moving along the positive path, we can stumble, be pushed, or give up and instantly touch any point on the negative path. For you see, the nagative path is not really a path at all but a deep dark, bottomless abyss. Each step we try to take in the abyss sinks us deeper making it harder to get out.
The positive path is similar to the abyss in only one aspect. From any point on it we can reach any other point with just a step. The positive path is a long and winding road. However in the light of the path points can be seen. All points must be achieved in order to suceed. If any point is missed you will find yourself falling back into the abyss.
From the abyss the light may seem impossible to reach. It is not. When you first touch the negative, as long as you don't try to struggle forward(downward) against it, you can easily step back to the light. Once you have begun to sink you must have the courage to overcome the fear and leap out of the abyss.
Sometimes we can do this on our own. Sometimes we need a swift kick in the ass and the lack of stubborness to realize what this kick is for.
There are three sources for this kick.
As your struggle to keep from sinking farther, a kick may come from someone in the light. You may also receive a kick from someone in the abyss. This may be a kick from some poor soul who is so mired in the darkness that they want to have company. Don't let their kick drive you down farther and don't kick back. The poor lost soul find the courage to follow your example and leap out if you don't add to its misery. The third kick also comes from the abyss. It may be a kick from someone who is struggling towards the light with you.
Work together. Make the leap back into the light.

Umm, are you sure you aren't setting up a false dichotomy?
It's easy (and common) after the fact to claim a series of decisions were good or bad, but it's always hindsight, and it's almost always done in such a way as to exagerrate the goodness or badness of each decision, depending on the current mindset of the decision maker.

I have thought about it and fined tuned it for over a year now.
I have watched two people i love very dearly hit every step of the wrong path and never attempt to step to the positive. I have even been dragged into the abyss with them while trying to dragg them out.
I failed. I failed them. But most of all I failed me because I couldn't accomplish the greater good.
