I saw this couple on PBS doing all these groovy kid projects. One recipe/experiment was a homemade version of silly putty.
*Mix 2 Tbs white glue and 2-3 drops food coloring together in a small bowl. *Put 1 Tbs liquid starch in a second bowl. *Slowly pour colored glue mixture on top of liquid starch. *Let the mixture stand until the glue absorbs the starch, about 5 minutes. *Remove mixture from bowl & knead it until it doesn't look like you've made a mistake. *Store finished putty in plastic egg or Ziplock bag.
Anyone else have fun and easy kid projects to share?

I think that Liquid Borax also works. We made that stuff for years in nursery school, its close but not quite the same as silly putty, it stretches and makes really cool stringy stuff and then will just break, and it bounces back. I don't think it picks up newspaper as well but it might. The borax or starch should be available in the laundary isle somewhere.
