He's a good teacher. Tonight at fencing we finally got to start bouting, right after we did some more parry/riposte drills.

We'd just learned two new parries for lowline attacks (7&8 if you're curious) and I got partnered with the instructor to practice the new parries.

APPARENTLY, I do this correctly and fast without thinking. He asked, "Are you SURE you haven't done this before?"

Hee. Friggin awesome.

So THEN we got to do a little round robin.

And I find out--I have speed. Not just speed, but SPEED. And grasp the mechanics of the strip.

Anyway. Many many thinks to Ken (psychotriad).

I've been tellin' ya all along you've got what it takes to be awesome in the sport. Just keep up the hard work and you'll be kickin my ass soon, kiddo. Just wait until you figure out that all your energy will give you a hell of an offense. Speed plus the gusto to use it makes for a great combination.

Glad its going so well for you.

So what happened to all my other people who were going to begin fencing??? I seem to remember Jamie being one of several at wenchcon who said they planned to go on in fencing.

My very own "Ken is cool" thread. [Blushing]

I have to agree. Ken IS cool!

Plus, he's a redhead... major bonus points in his favor! [Smile]

I took a fencing class once. Good times. I'd take it up again, but turning sideways to minimize damage area doesn't really work for me. It's fun to watch, though.

BTW, Psychotriad, you're still awesome! I'm sure your fencing would beat my iaido in a fight [Smile]

well.. i'm pretty sure a katana would pretty much trash a fencing foil.

Do you practice with actually sharpened weapons at all?

What kind of waiver would they make you sign for that, with fencing already having the "right to die" form.

In the beginning, you start off with an unsharpened practice katana called an iaito. At some point, when you're good enough, you can switch to a live blade. Note: easy to hurt yourself.

I only started this semester, so I'm at the very beginning of it all. Really quite a cool martial art.

here is a photo gallery of the katas (forms) we learn.

My pictures got my little sister (16) all interested. She and this guy she likes are considering signing up for fencing classes. I, on the other hand, have had to settle for mental fencing with insane second graders.

aww.. come on andrea! you were doin awesome.

But seriously, if you need help finding a club in their area, just let me know. I can look it up on the US fencing site ( or show you how to ) so you can see where the clubs are in their area, and learn a bit about them so that you can choose the right group.
