I want to get AIM, so I can chat with friends, but when you downlaod and install AIM, it also installs a bunch of spyware.

Does anyone know of there's a way to do it without getting all the spyware, too?

(Edit: Instally is not a word.)

Yeah, but who uses Gaim?
Everyone uses AIM, so I wouldn't be able to chat with them. [Razz]

Yes you would. Gaim accesses the AIM network.

I prefer Trillian myself.

You still have to sign up for an AIM account, but both Gaim and Trillian interface with the AIM network just fine.

So can you sign up for an AIM account without downloading anything?

I was recently converted to Adium. Many moons ago, it sucked, but in the intervening years someone seems to have made it mighty good.

Thanks, Ela!

That's the only reason I'd sign up for anything with AOL in the name. [Big Grin]

Yep - you can sign up without any fuss and simply enter that login information into the Gaim, Trillian or Adium program as you prefer.

One more question:

If I download Gaim, it will only download Gaim, right? No other programs will be installed, right?

(I want to be really sure before I download anything, we've had really bad virus/spyware problems in the past.)

I believe Gaim is a freeware program and as such does not come embedded with spyware and assorted garbage.

I know Trillian does not.

Gaim is freeware and open source. And it's great. [Smile]

I've been using it for over a year -- maybe closer to two? -- and I love it. I hate using AIM when I'm on someone else's machine.

See, ketchupqueen, I told you. Join the bandwagon, download an open-source spyware-free AIM client.

that is AIM without the adds. It is a program that pulls out all the adds and spyware...and just installs the AIM program.

Both Gaim and Adium support Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and Jabber. (I may be forgetting some.)

I think Gaim also supports IRC, although I prefer mIRC for that.

While I use gaim for IM. I prefer irssi for IRC. (Then I can truely idle without ever leaving. Unless power strangely goes out at the datacenter [Frown] )

One thing that I dislike about Trillian is that it seems to ignore my IM block list. I have two people on there, one because she's a complete {bleep} and the other because she's obnoxious when I'm at work. If I'm using Trillian, they can get through to me. (and I leave it set for anyone can see me because of Hatrack, so there! LOL)

well which ever client you choose, i hope to talk to you, also if you do end up getting aim, don't install weather bug, that is spyware for sure, and slows your computer down an insane amount.

So.. if I installed AIM awhile ago. Do I have all this nasty spyware?
If so, how do I rid of it?

I'd uninstall AIM - I don't think it will run without the spyware.

But to clean up your system, I'd recommend downloading two different freeware spyware programs to sweep your drive.

http://www.lavasoft.de publishes Ad-Aware which is a pretty good program.

Spybot S&D is the other adware program I use in conjunction with AdAware. (linky takes you to Download.com's page on this program)
