I've recently learned to behave a bit better with my books. My boyfriend is Hindu, and one of the, well, suggestions of Hinduism (there aren't any set rules to the religion, really...) is that one should respect books, as they represent education and learning. This doesn't mean worship--one should just be careful, and not throw them around or step on them.

With the mess that finals always wreaks on his room (mine as well) stepping on a textbook or novel is certainly a possibility. When Abhi does this by accident, he'll make a short puja to the book (hands together and slight bow from the head/upper body). It's a reminder, of sorts, that he is lucky to have access to this knowledge, and that he should respect the learning that the book represents. I've gotten into the habit as well, at first just to respect his beliefs, but now because I think the sort of mindfulness that these customs of Hinduism lead to can be a good perspective on life.

Lucky for us, there's no particular problem with wearing a book out with love. [Smile] That's better than just letting knowledge go to waste by leaving the book on the shelf.
