I've never played Go before, but I've always wanted to learn. I've been reading up on the rules and I have a nitpick question. Wouldn't Xav's handicap be two stones?

You can make the handicap whatever you want, really. In a 19x19 board, he probably would have given me more .
Edit: Punwit, you are speaking of the handicap for white against black aren't you? Yes, that is two stones. But, its factored into the final score. It doesn't effect the initial stone placement.
The three stones he gave me was to make it a more interesting game, since I am a beginner, and him quite good. Its pretty traditional to handicap games in this way. The handicap stones are always on the marked intersections.

Hmmm, I was thinking about what I said, and remembered that the handicap was a fraction...
So I looked it up. Its usually 5.5 on 9x9 games, and usually in favor of white, since black usually moves first. Its called Komi.
We probably aren't using it in this game, since there's the existing handicap, and because after the handicap, white moved first. Plus, I don't think either of us care about who wins. Furthermore, it usually doesn't determine the winner. Almost always it seems (when I play) that someone wins big, and the other guy loses big.
And thanks, I will probably need it .

Vadon, I looked into the Dragon Go Server once a while ago, but it was a little confusing. I might take another look. Though, usually I prefer playing in real time. KGS is my server of choice (my handle is ibis).
Komi in handicap games is usually 0 (or 0.5, for tie-breaking), so we'll go with that. It's true that three stones like this is really only two extra stones for black, since white goes first, but it is traditionally called a three-stone handicap (there is no one-stone handicap).

Alright, that is a better server. (It does update real time which is nice.) Signed up as Vadon.
The convinience of Dragon Go Server is that you don't have to be playing at the same time, kind of like what you're doing here.

I guess I have conceeded the top right corner . I think I have a pretty good start on the rest of the board though (which I'm sure you will take from me ).

I love go! I have little idea how good I am at it, since not many people around here will play with me and I haven't tried online games. For some reason, this is one game I have an aversion to playing without the physical board and pieces in front of me. The only other game I have that issue with (that I know of) is blackjack.

Enig, I am not very good, adn to be honest I have no idea how they are getting the "board" up there is the first place, but if you would like to use a site that would allow us to play, I will give it a shot...

There is something undeniably appealing about playing with real slate and shell on a good board. But online is better than nothing at all, and there aren't too many go players nearby. Of course, that'll change when I move to San Francisco this month.
