My school offers free online training for various rinky-dink certificates. I have decided to do the A+ certification. I went through the online tutorials. I bought the Mike Meyeres Book (latest edition) and read it.
Everytime I take the practice tests, I only get like 70%. I have only studied 1 1/2 weeks, but I am surprised by how hard it is. I fear I have lost my academic edge and memory.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can prepare for the test? I want to walk in being able to get a comfy 90% on the practice tests.
Are there any online charts? I have gone through and feel I understand the relationship of how things work, but there are a lot of things to memorize--like how many pins are in this connector and what all the hexidecimals stand for. I am looking for charts of some kind that have all this information condensed for easy reference and study.
Thank you anyone who has been here and can offer support.
When I pass this test, I will next study for the Network+ exam.

Well, I have an A+ certification but it was like...ages ago.. when much of it was over DOS commands, etc. *grin*
And it doesn't really mean diddle-squat in this area, at least. I work in a tech support department that has about 15 employees, and very very few have any "certifications" -- although most are very good at what they do. Except maybe some have specific CISCO training and some networking training.
(and like I work on Dell computers all day, since that is what my company runs -- but Dell won't recognize your A+ cert in order to do warranty work for them -- you have to take their own "special" Dell test and get certified through Dell itself in order to do that)
But you have to start somewhere, I guess. Sorry I can't give you better advice, since the current test it nothing like the one I took years ago, I'm sure.

Studying for a cert is unfortunately the worst way to learn the material. Actually playing with computers for two or three years makes it much more likely that you'll pass the test without much study required at all.

Um, hexadecimals as in actual machine code? If so, you might want to try a bit of programming, rather than memorising. Actually using the codes is the best way to learn them. Try a simple 'Hello World' (which isn't so simple in hex!) first, then a guess-the-number game. Doing a guess-the-number in machine code makes you Officially L337.
