John Mayer is an incredible musician. He is an amazing guitar player, and plays "for real," not just in the studio.
Sorry to disappoint, but I am not jumping on the anti-John Mayer band wagon. I heard a live show of his before he hit the big time. He deserves all the fame, fortune, and all that goes along with it, that he has earned, and that he wants.

I dislike all the John Mayer I've heard (I just don't enjoy his music . . . nothing more than that), but I do really like his song "Comfortable" when sung by the Rice Philharmonics.

I think he's actually pretty good. He's no Dave Matthews in terms of guitar skills, songwriting, or in general sound, but I like much of what he sings.

He was in a pretty funny skit on The Chappelle show, so I can't hate him. But I do like your description of the way he sings.

I really like listening to him on cd's or the radio, there he doesn't bother me at all. But on the live clips I've seen of him (crossroads guitar fest, some other PBS special) watching his face was nearly painful, moreso than most violinists I know when they are really into it.

Basing an artists's skill and talent on what the radio decides to play leads to a very limited scope of most musicians' work.

Bleck. I hate that "Your body is a wonderland" song. Does that mean I lack a sex drive? If Mr. Opera sang that to me I'd be seriously creeped out.
quote:No, he is no Dave Matthews because he is not really a rocker. He is more of a blues-soul-folk singer-songwriter.
And he is one hell of a blues guitarist.
You've never heard Dave play blues music on the guitar? He's a lot better than John Mayer. Many of Dave's rhythms are South African folk inspired. Dave isn't really a rocker either, at least not by the standards set in the last...20 years or so. Dave is amped up folk. Just because he usually isn't as mellow as John Mayer doesn't make him that much more rock than folk/blues.
I put him in the same category as Dave Matthews because they belong there.

I think a lot of people are "better" than John Mayer, mainly because I like them better. Really, though, I was just trying to defend the poor guy, because, though he may be playing certain publicity cards right now, he is a good musician.

I like a few of his songs, am indifferent to most of them, and really hate a few. Which puts him about par as far as musicians go in my favor.
I like the acoustic version of "Your Body is a Wonderland" but not the regular version. I like "No Such Thing." Can't stand "Daughters." And so on...

As several people have said, it's foolish to judge any artist by what the radio plays. The singles are intended to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and usually aren't very good.
That said, I love acoustic guitar and anyone who plays good music on it. I think Mayer is a complete bad***, and is a much more skilled guitar player than Dave Matthews. I like Dave Matthews too, but they're totally different artists.
Put DMB songs next to John Mayer, they have almost nothing in common. John Mayer writes a lot of love songs, DMB writes a lot of altered-consciousness songs.
Before I really listened to John Mayer, I had a problem with the breathy vocals. But now, it's not that big a deal. I think he's a phenomenal songwriter/guitar player, and a good singer.

I don't hate him, but I hate the whiny no-talent poser boys who invariably cover his songs at talent shows.

I actually have no idea what the man sounds like, but anyone who titles a song 'Your body is a wonderland' is a dork.

Jason Mraz's new song is so completely self-referential that it makes me want to vomit. John Mayer's "No Such Thing" was pretty good, but I can't stand anything else.

I didn't like John Mayer when I first heard him. A friend made me get his first album, and I listened to it a couple of times and was thoroughly unimpressed.
Later on I gave it another chance and ended up not hating it. By a couple more listens I became a fairly big fan. I've since bought his second album, and both of them are among my favorites.
I can see where the haters are coming from, but I'm no longer one.

"Bubbly toes" I was just going to say that it was Jack "surfer Boy" Johnson.
I think people can get Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and John Mayer confused at first listen.
And anyway, the world's best guitar player is upstairs in bed right now. He just turned nine.
Edit: Speed, I have some live John Mayer. Shoot me your address again. Well, let me see if I still have it.
