Because I thought people might find this interesting (a snippet from my MA thesis):

quote:
Helen does not perform the role of dutiful wife by spinning the wool into yarn, but instead she takes an active role in the male-dominated dinner and conversation. This distinction between the role of a woman and the role of a poet highlights Helen’s assumption of the latter. Since she here eschews the role of the woman in favor of the role of the poet, the contrast between the two is highlighted. Though her presentation has been foreshadowed, this dramatic contrast between the roles of woman and poet emphasizes Helen’s poetic nature in addition to her female nature.
