McGavin is best known for plaing the father in A Christmas Story.

He was also awesome as Kolchak in the original Night Stalker TV series.

Also had a great bit on The X-Files, and was in a film called Hangar 18 that precluded Chris Carter's show and Independence Day by about 15 years.

He will be missed...
