Diana Wynne Jones' book Howl's Moving Castle, on which I wrote a rather dodgy essay on two days ago, (and is one of my favourites) got me thinking.
If you could build a house, and, like the moving castle, have its door(s) open on four places in the world, where would those places be?
Mine:
1. Toronto (The city) 2. Sennen Cove or Cambridge, England (I can't decided between the sea or old memories) 3. Ottawa (the snow and mon famille) 4. New Zealand (somewhere ridiculously remote, but, see, that's the beauty of it: it's remote... but not!)
Runners up: Antarctica (just for kicks)
So, where would your four doors open onto?

Could this house move? If so, how fast can it move and what would its limitations be? Because if it could, it would almost be a waste to choose two places within "moving" distance of each other, right?
I don't know if I could narrow it down to only four places.

I started making a list, but I was just naming beaches of different parts of the world.
1) A pacific island somwhere, perhaps Hawaii. 2) Somewhere in the Carribean. 3) Somewhere on the Mediterranean. 4) A beach-house on one of the great lakes, probably Lake Ontario.
Can you tell I miss big bodies of water? Stupid Nebraska, no beaches at all .

1. Budapest. My favorite city. 2. Anywhere in the south of Italy. Napoli, Cesarto, Palermo...that would be my warm-weather fix. 3. Whistler. Year-round skiing/snowboarding. 4. London, my second-favorite city.

1. My work (no commute -- I can sleep later) 2. My son's school (so he doesn't have to commute, either) 3. My Mom's place (so I don't have to schlep so far in order to visit 4. My in-law's place (same reason)

I think I need to read that book. I've never heard of it, but the premise sounds fascinating.
Does one of the four places have to be where I live currently? Because I'm really not all that fond of it.
1) My parents' house in Illinois (also near a lot of my friends) 2) London (my home in the distant future, and my portal to the rest of Europe) 3) Leyte, Philippines (family & tropical beach goodness) 4) I can't decide on this one, so I guess I'll pick my current home after all: Long Island, NY
Runners-up are New Zealand, Brazil, Diwali National Park in Alaska, Yosemite, the redwood forests in the northwest, and Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. And probably more places if I keep thinking about it. Like Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
