I have to run stats on an informal survey I created, but my sample is too small. The topic is chocolate vs. vanilla and there's only 6 questions. Anyone want to help?

Chocolate vs Vanilla Survey

If you're not in school, please just select one of the majors listed (to make those numbers higher... I know this isn't good research, but I just need practice numbers)

Asking you to do this requires the disclaimer that this is just for my personal homework and results won't be published.

I do encourage posting and discussion of the topic in the thread [Smile]

edit: disabled link as survey is closed. See below for details.

Pretty cool.

It got me thinking, though. I always choose vanilla over chocolate for ice cream; but choose chocolate over vanilla for pudding (which was not on the survey). I wonder why?

It made me laugh!

FG- a comment to that effect from a classmate is exactly why I thought it would be a fun survey.

When you get done with this you should post all of the made up majors and let us guess who came up with what.

I did it. And I chose "Early Childhood" for my major, because I'm living it...

I eventually want to go into counseling (myself as the practitioner although receiving it for myself wouldn't be too bad either) so I marked that.

Farmgirl:

That is an interesting observation and one that I believe that I can shed some light on.

Chocolate is much better as a topping or mix in to vanilla ice cream. Chocolate ice cream is okay, but there's something about the texture (and perhaps temperature) of ice cream that diminishes the experience a bit.

Pudding on the other hand (and its hoity toity cousin mousse) is the perfect medium for pure chocolate taste because of it's consistency.

Incidentally, that's why chocolate shakes are better than a plain scoop of chocolate ice cream. It's all about how texture affects taste, I think.

Edit to add: I think that the reverse is also true. The vanilla flavour is a better experience in the form of ice cream than pudding. Or at least, it is for me.

Absolutely.

I answered "chocolate" for almost everything except for which ice cream I'd choose ... because you can put so many more things on vanilla ice cream, depending on your mood. Including chocolate syrup ... or fudge ... or oreos ... etc.

But chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and vanilla ice cream ... MMMMMM.

I did it, and chose "Family Therapy" because home life and Hatrack both feel that way sometimes.

I had trouble with part of it, though -- I prefer chocolate frosting, unless it's chocolate cake, in which case I prefer vanilla frosting. Since they asked my preference for cake first, should I assume I got what I asked for?

And does the ice cream have the real vanilla bean specks? *smile*

I answered half and half. It's much harder to make really good chocolate ice cream, (impossible in soft serve), but that's closer to what I'd pick.

I agree with pop -- if it is chocolate cake, then chocolate frosting seems like too much, and I'd opt for a different topping. But if it is any other kind of cake, I would go with chocolate frosting.
So I also hesitate on that question, because I had already marked "chocolate" for cake, but it didn't say whether the frosting question is directly related to THAT cake or any cake.

Thanks to everyone! I'm over my target number already. I'm going to let it run until I reach the max (Survey Monkey is only kind of free) so feel free to keep on taking it.

Good question about the cake and frosting. It's not a well-written question on my part, but for now we'll say that you get the flavor you marked on the cake. [Smile]

I will choose vanilla over frosting, almost without question.

Except white chocolate, but that wasn't an option (and is usually vanilla flavored anyway).

All offices should stock an emergency chocolate stash that is given out free of charge to any employee who comes charging in with that look in their eyes. You know -- that look.

LOL--anyone watch "The Closer"? In the season opener the main character declares she is giving up candy, and at a tense moment towards the end one of the men gives her some chocolate and says something like, "Please, do us all a favor and eat this."

That look?

I was the same way, Teshi--I managed to stretch my undergraduate career out to 6 and a half years taking loads and loads of anything that looked interesting to me. I had a ridiculous number of hours accumulated by the time I finally gave in and graduated. Zipped right through my graduate degree, though.

You are sick and wrong. Chocolate frosting can go on vanilla cake, but vanilla frosting on chocolate cake is blech!

You know, kq, you've pissed a couple people off in the past with the manner by which you indicate your preferences when it comes to food (or more to the point, the manner by which you express your opinion of others' preferences when they don't match yours). I'm assuming you're attempting the funny here, and inasmuch as funny is in the eye of the beholder, I'm not beholdin' it so much here.

Y'know, just sayin'. And yes, I grant that over the past few days my funny beholding abilities may have atrophied a bit.

I'll put in a vote for chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. Ice cream doesn't matter...chocolate or vanilla. It's the icing on the cake, that's important. [Smile]

I agree about the ice cream. I think it's the process -- I can stir up my own vanilla/chocolate combination (be it syrup, fudge, or Nesquick) with nothing but a spoon, and it turns out great. Pre-mixed chocolate ice cream I tend to turn my nose at.

And I think chocolate frosting on chocolate cake (esp. Devil's Food cake) is awesome. Though I'm not a fan of normal frosting anyway.

I was indeed. I'm sorry you didn't see it. [Frown]

Does anyone really think that I would think someone was sick and wrong for their food preferences? I was using hyperbole to indicate that I was trying to amuse.

The smell of vanilla (like a vanilla scented candle, not like smelling vanilla ice cream) is incredible. I don't really like vanilla as a flavor. Too boring. The smell of vanilla doesn't seem to resemble the flavor at all.

I know you were kidding, kq, and I know you wouldn't think someone was sick and wrong for their food preferences. It's just that hearing it stung anyway. And I know I'm guilty of it at times, and there's a big fat beam in my eye, and I was just really sensitive to it today, and at the time I posted I just wasn't prepared to suck it up. And I can even (from a logical, removed position) recognize that it's a fairly ridiculous thing to get upset over in any case. Maybe it was just a straw that broke this Moose's back. After I posted it I had to leave for a few hours, during which I thought a lot about it, and I'm really, really sorry I posted it on your anniversary, which I hope was otherwise happy.

I think I need to go to sleep. G'night.

I've had days like that, Pop. Heck, I was just pregnant, I had a whole lot of them. And don't worry, one comment is not going to ruin my day-- 2 sick kids and vomit all over my bed and no quarters to do laundry this morning kinda did that as much as it was gonna be done. [Wink]

The survey is closed as it has reached the maximum number of participants that SurveyMonkey will allow on a free account.

In case anyone else is curious, the questions are as follows:

1. In general, which do you prefer- chocolate or vanilla?
2. If you had to choose between chocolate or vanilla ice cream, which would you choose?
3. If you had to choose between chocolate or vanilla cake, which would you choose?
4. If you had to choose between chocolate or vanilla frosting for the cake, which would you choose?
5. Are you male or female?
6. What is your major?

Many thanks to all those who participated!
