Actually, the title of the post is a bit misleading because this is not my theory. I am merely reposting an existing theory posted by a user called "The_Observant_Child" here. The trolls will never truly be gone, and there is a reason why. Trolls generate traffic, more so than normal users. They cause all sorts of drama and raise hell for attention, which causes traffic and traffic sells advertisements, which makes the hatrack money. Thus, actively hunting down trolls is not in the favor of the admins. All they have to do is delete occasional ruthless amount of spam to keep disgruntled users from leaving, but spare the real master minds like droog alive to give them traffic. Thank you.- Dr. Ray Borin

That's very stainless steel rat of you. Too bad you are wrong. Non-trolls do not need trolls to create interest and traffic for them.

Fundamental flaw: It only works when the site's purpose is to make money. This site's purpose is not that. Therefore, increased traffic for traffic's sake is not a goal.

LOL! I missed the recent Droogness, but he has been amusing. Sure, he's danced the naked rumba all over the ToS, but he hasn't managed to offend me (which in certain lunar phases should be really easy to do *snarl*).

I wonder how many people who read this thread are trolls... Trolls are trouble-makers, right? I'm not up on this forum lingo.

Moreover, as I understand it, Google ads do not in fact pay out based on traffic -- ESPECIALLY not traffic from the same users refreshing over and over again, which is what you'd see from a forum dealing with a troll.
Since Hatrack is an AdWords customer, tempests in this particular teapot don't make OSC any extra money unless they somehow inspire people to buy related works on Amazon.
