Enthusiastic, well-meaning, pop-culture-oriented, savvy at marketing, has probably done a whole mess of good for individual persons trying to lose weight during his heyday [and actually, through his ongoing efforts].

That the things that make him nails-on-a-chalkboard to me are probably the things that make him effective at what he does, so I should just turn the channel and move on.

My friends and I watch his Sweating to the Oldies tape at parties. There is this one hottie in bright yellow shorts... If you click this link and then go to the larger image of the cover, he's the guy on the left left left side who looks like he's doing the chicken dance.

I thought his stint on "Whose Line is it Anyway" is one of the funniest pieces of television produced in the past ten years or so.

He doesn't take himself too seriously, and he has a good sense of humor about his pop culture role.

My mom used to work at O'Hare airport as a passenger support agent (directing people to their airplane, escorting unaccompanied minors, helping disabled people, etc.) and met Richard Simmons there. He gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Anyone who would give my mom a kiss can't be all bad.
(Although, Mom mentioned that he was wearing shorts and tank top at the time, so I guess he really does dress like that!)

At first I thought Richard was the gayest man on 3 planets. Then I watched Strider's You Tube clip of "whose line is it anyway". Nope. He's the gayest man on 6 planets.

Theme parties have been huge off campus this year, and the best one all year was Richard Simmons themed (a theatre-major party). They bought a bunch of his old VHS tapes and played them the whole time. Everyone sported short shorts and a tank top, and boy was it fun.
Other fun ones: golf pros & tennis hos, anything but clothes, and a "redneck" themed party.

Because I'm sure you're totally interested.
I opened this thread earlier after reading the Romney thread, and then came back to it and forgot that I had switched threads when I read this post, so I assumed it was talking about Romney and thus I was very confused for a little bit.

I was watching something on Discovery Health about a nursing home/rehab center that caters to people too obese for other centers. One of the guys had a case of Richard Simmons hero worship, and Simmons came to visit the patients.
He took time to visit every single person there. He had a hug, some kind words, and plenty of encouragement for everyone he met. You could just see the love he had for all of them in his eyes and his smile.
He may dress like a nut job and behave all crazy, but I still think he's a good guy. We all go a little off sometimes. I think the good he's done outweighs his wonkiness.

I suspect what we are seeing is the difference between a celebrities public and private persona. Take comedians for example, in their public life they are making us laugh, but they are not our servants. They have a right to a private life, and you should not be disappointed when you meet them and they are not cracking joke for your entertainment.
On 'screen' Richard does have good sense of humor about himself. David Letterman is constantly making joke about him when he is on the Late Show, and Richard plays along nicely. But in private, I think he must be far more serious than he is 'on stage'. He is a shrewd business man and talented at marketing his business and products.
You have to admit that is was pretty gutsy of Richard to smack a guy who out weighed him by a 100 pounds. I'm sure the guy brought charge more out of being humiliate than anything else. He stricks me as a guy who has been smack many times in his life, and just walked away.
I have a certain compassion for celebrities. People seem to forget there are MILLIONS of us, and only one of him. So, they are dissappointed or think a celebrity is 'stick up' because they can't take time to stop and talk to us, or the won't perform like trained monkeys when we meet them on the street. Consider that this celebrity is stopped a million times a day and may actually have places to go and things to do.
Think what you may about Richard Simmons, but he's rich and you are not, and he earned every penny he has.
