I am building one for my senior project, and having a fun time at it. I am winding the coil right now, and was just wondering if any of my fellow hatrackers had any experience with them.
Or that they knew Nikola Tesla is the coolest guy ever.
So.... Do any of you?

My dad really considered building a Tesla Coil once about ten years ago for very little reason at all. He read every book he could find on him around that time too.

Most screwed over guy since the one who invented sex. So smart that people still think he was recieving his ideas by telepathic contact with aliens. Probably created the first 'new' tools in several thousand years.

I will attach pictures. I am really enjoying how amazing he was, I mean, he made computer monitors possible, and if you have a wireless mouse or keyboard, he made that possible, and so many other things.
Edison and Marconi were worms compared to Tesla.
Right now I am filled with that happy tired feeling, I just got back from a practice house burn. I am volunteer firefighting and fire is really amazing, much like electricity, thus like tesla coils.

I am scheduling the utter destruction of Siberia for about mid April. Although Canada is looking mighty fine about now. (less distance for my killer death zap to travel)

Yeah, I was indoctrinated into the school of Edison when I was young, too. Tesla was amazing. Anyone seen The Prestige?

I remember reading that his documents that were taken after his death are still held as top secret by the US government today. I'd love to get a look at them.
Tesla is also one of the reasons I'm going into electrical engineering (though with a biomedical slant, because I also <3 cyborgs).

First, Edison the Saint--see the movie staring Spensor Tracy.
Second, if it wasn't for Edison's attempts to monopolize the movie industry, Hollywood would still be an orange grove. Edison is not my favorite person.
Third, Tesla is great.
Finally, Don't blow up Siberia until much later please. I plan to be there a couple of times between May and August.

Something you may not know about Tesla, he developed a way to transmit electrical energy through the ground. That is, his method did away with powerlines. He successfully demonstrated his method, then disassembled it and it was never heard from again. Not sure why though. Tesla swore his method was safe and efficient.
Think what this might mean, you could be out in the middle of a wilderness, and simply plug your receiver into the ground and draw electricity to power lights and heat.
I suspect one of the problems was that once the power was in the ground, how could you control who tapped into it. If you can't control who, how, and when people access your product, how can you charge them for it?
It is true that after Tesla's death, his house was ransacked and all his papers were taken away. Most people, an probably rightly so, suspect the government took all of Tesla's writings and stashed them away some where, or possibly destroyed them.
As has been referenced by others, Tesla conceived of a 'charge weapon' device that could direct an immense charge of electricity with high degree of accuracy. It is suspected that a massive explosion in Siberia that leveled a large section of forest was the work of Telsa, and it is likely for this reason that his records were seized after his death.

You're referencing the Tunguska event here, I assume? While is has been suggested that Tesla was responsible for it, saying that "it is suspected" lends this theory a bit more credence than it deserves.

My favorite thing about Edison was when Tesla championed the superiod AC (alternate current) as opposed to Edison's DC (direct current), Edison started a big marketing campaign where people were told that they use AC to power electric chairs for executions and that if they employed the deadly AC in their homes they risked being killed whereas DC was completely different and 100% safe.
Edison was a very interesting man and definitely a work horse, but he was definitely not a man of unscrupulous principles.

Also, how come this thread is always returning to that area?
-And I have heard of energy transmittance, Tesla used his Magnifying Transmitter to conduct through the ground 40 kilometers and lit up fields of light bulbs ala The Prestige.
