If there is a steady source of pride in their military it is that their Navy is top notch. Assaulting it is likely to make the Briton's a bit more enthusiastic about round two with Iran.
I do not think it is 'the' provocation, but if it stands it will embolden Iran to make the big blunder, if they kill the sailors, as undisciplined troops are likely to do, they commit an act of war on the sea. If they give them back with apologies then they are surrendering a waterway they claim is theirs. It is a bad way for Iran to start the day.
