My little girl adores Kipper the Dog and Curious George. She is also very into Tom & Jerry so I get to watch something I like too. I don't mind most of the stuff, it's the repetition that starts to make me nuts. Personally, I like Jack's Big Music Show and The Backyardigans. They are pretty cool!

I just don't get how anyone can enjoy the Wiggles. That show is like shoving my brain through a cheese grater.

I liked Backyardigans when it first came out, but they only have about a dozen shows, so at this point I'd rather see Dora than Backyardigans. I'm just sick of them.

But Blue's Clues beats them all.* The old Steve ones. I could watch those by myself.

(*except Sesame Street ... who could beat Sesame Street?)

My four year old's faves (We only have PBS) are Caillou and (Heaven help us) Big Comfy Couch. Barney's got nothing on Big Comfy Couch when it comes to annoyance. Clowns that rap? She eats it up.

You mean Square One TV. 3-2-1 Contact was good too, but it was science based more than math-based.

Barney has never been allowed in my home. (As in, I refused to allow a relative (more than once) to give my kids anything Barney-related.) Had Dora been around at the relevant time, she probably would have been banned too.

We do one 10-minute segment of Peep and the Big Wide World per day (sometimes 2 if Momma is sick or Daddy is on duty). It's strange how they air them - it's one segment of Paz, which we all hate, then one Peep, then a couple minutes of kids doing activities that involve the lesson or subject of the previous Peep, then another Peep, then more kids. Joan Cusack is the narrator and the characters are so funny. There's no commercials, which is great, and we just tape them to our DVR and fast forward through the non-Peep stuff.

We've also started doing snippets of Sesame Street. My favorite is when Praire Dawn tries to do the letter of the day and Cookie Monster eats it. There's also a neat animal birthday song sung by a nameless muppet guy and various animals that we like. I hate Baby Bear, though, and I never let Aerin watch him. Our developmental specialist also told us not to let Aerin watch him at all. Or listen to him, to be exact. He has a speech impediment and it's not good for speech development to be exposed to that.

I watched about 5 minutes of Dora a couple of years ago and the lambs haven't stopped screaming yet.

My daughter has become entranced with a Dora the Explorer DVD we got from the library.

I'm hoping that she's absorbing Spanish, Latin culture, and basic navigation skills.

And not, say, yelling everything five times at the top of your lungs.

Good God, that show is like being asked to save Tinkerbell every thirty seconds...

Hmm... Sesame Street, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Lamb Chop's Playalong... I'm trying to remember what others I watched when little... Mathnet was definitely one of them. Ghostwriters was for a while too I think (I think that's what it was called). When I hit elementary school (and even beyond, while I had time), I used to watch Wishbone and Bill Nye when bored after school. Even when I was probably too old for them I still loved them [Smile] Probably still would... hmm... maybe I'll go dl em.

My son loves Bob the Builder and Clifford.

I just have to bite my tongue about all of Bob's poor building techniques. I would be scared to set foot in a building he put up.

I loved ALL of those. And I watched Wishbone even when I was probably too old for him too. I used to have a crush on that kid.

I loved Ghostwriter! Oh, man. I wish I could watch it again; I bet I'd still love it..

Oh, Bill Nye, I miss him.

PBS aired an Electric Company special a couple months ago ... we recorded it, and now our kids have been exposed to the hilarity that was Electric Company. Once again our halls are ringing with, "Hey, you guys!"

Alcon, did your school do the Bill Nye program? We were all given a survey in 6th grade (so you would have been in fifth) asking if we liked Bill Nye. Then everyone who did got about eight episodes on VHS, a few bill nye experiement kits, and candy. Then we had to review the videos and kits. It was lots of fun, I'd guess you guys probably got it too because Brancolini's went to your school.

Mr. Rogers, Sesame Street, Electric Company. That was my triple feature on PBS. And for excitement, there was Cartoon Town (with BJ and Dirty Dragon), Speed Racer, and Prince Planet.

We don't have cable. My daughter is allowed to watch some shows on PBS and then we get her Blue's Clues, Max and Ruby and the Backyardigans and the occasional movie from Netflix. It's great because it offers the illusion of choice and control.

I can't imagine life with cable. I already watch to much TV.

Edit: I should say though that we can't escape Dora because the merchandising is pervasive. Luckily, although aware of Dora's existence, my daughter doesn't ask for the show.

My daughter was solidly in the Blue's Clues camp. She also liked Magic School Bus and Clifford. We didn't allow Barney or Teletubbies.

My son loves Lunar Jim. He also likes Dora but we don't have cable so he rarely sees it.

Are you talking about Tiny Tov, on Magic Door, Sunday mornings?

It's funny, but I first discovered Sesame Street and Speed Racer by turning the TV on early for Mr. Rogers and Cartoon Town, respectively.

Do you remember FrankenWeird and WolfWally? And the Lemon Joke Kid?

When I have kids, will there be any way to avoid children's programming at all? Because that'll be my goal. No cartoons--just boring and educational. That way they're used to learning without all the flashing lights and colors. And they'll probably be so bored with TV that they choose to read instead.

I just got cable because my reception was lousy. Channels would just cut out completely and I had to fiddle with the rabbit ears all the time. I just got the basic, though. No new channels unless you count public access.

We don't get anything if we don't get cable. But we have cable internet and phone service, and to add cable in a bundle costs $1 more a month ('cause they charge you a $10 fee if you have cable internet but no cable service and basic cable is $11/mo.) But "basic" cable just means "not digital, no premiums"-- we get Disney, Nick, Discovery, Animal Planet, SciFi, all that.

Yeah, that's Enhanced Basic if you have Digital here, but they just have Basic or Basic Plus... (with HBO, Showtime, etc. added) as options for non-digital.

Kids shows are annoying, but the kids like them and many teach the kids lessons. There are worse things for them to be exposed to. That being said, I can not stand The Upside Down Show.

I actually like Dora, though I haven't seen the show in ages; I no longer have Nickelodeon.

Aside from those shows already mentioned, I liked Zoom and Powerhouse. (And I'm glad I found that link, 'cause it's the first evidence I've seen in a couple of decades that this show actually existed and anybody else saw it.)

I also liked the Villa Alegre theme song, though I don't remember much about the show itself.

(Wikipedia links replaced with TinyURLs because they include parentheses, which UBB chokes on.)

I loved that show! I was so sad when they didn't make more episodes. (And unlike 3-2-1 Contact, that decision was not reversed after a year.)

On the wikipage, there was a link to this site, which has episode summaries. I remember these! Especially "You Make Me Sick"! Oh, and the one with the machines that did the exercise for you!

My house is all about Little Einstein (rocket), Blues Clues (blue), and Dora (Back Pack)--in that order. (in parenthesis is how Toshi says the title).

Dora annoys me.

The most watched video is an old VHS called Shapes and Colors (shapes) that also has a lot of counting in it and another one by the same company about the alphabet.

Toshi turns three in a couple months and he can spell his name and identify every letter on a keyboard.

He also knows all the basic shapes, plus trapezoid, ellipse, oval, hexagone, pentagon, et cetera. He can count to 12.

He seems to watch a lot of TV, but my wife is really good about taking him to the library every other day and checking out books. We have to read about 7 books before he goes to sleep.

I keep him drawing and building things or playing outside, but he still watches about 2 hours a day.

I watched Sesame Street when I was younger, as well as Today's Special and a few others. I still enjoy the Magic School Bus, and I can handle Arthur, Pingu, Kratts' Creatures, and not a whole lot more.

It's all just too... frenetic.

lem, my daughter turns three in a couple of weeks, and she knows almost all the letters (upper and lower case) and numbers to about 50. Some of that is Sesame Street, I'm sure. A lot of the letter stuff, though (like finding them on the keyboard and pointing them out wherever we go, and knowing their sounds) is Starfall, which Boon linked to a while back and which we LOVE. You might check it out. [Smile]

Tova loves Little Einsteins. But she's almost 7 years old, and it's ridiculous for her to be watching it. It's almost as annoying as Dora and JoJo's Circus. They're all the same kind of thing, with exclamation points at the end of every sentence.

Not only did he actually sing in at least three sketches (the SN song I already linked, the -ly song, and the wonderful Silent E), but he wrote many others (such the Menu Song).
