Nope, not spam this time. A picture of HSM star Vanessa Hudgens has been released onto the Internet and the assorted media is abuzz. (Link is to the AP story, work-safe) What I'm wondering is, what happens now?

This could easily damage her career. She's working with Disney, a company understandably cautious with its family-friendly image.

But so far I think she's handling things (or her people are handling things) exactly right. The photo was verified to be authentic immediately, no hemming and hawing and stalling. It has been explained as a private thing, meant to remain private. No word yet on how it got out. And Disney has not said anything one way or another.

But so far public sentiment seems to be less "oh no, another teen tart" and more "that poor girl, who would do that to her?" Rightfully so, I think.

What do you think?

*snort* If you say so....the movie The Rescuers" comes to mind, and I don't care what Snopes says, I know what I saw on the cover of that Little Mermaid video.

Please. Hidden "find the phallus" images spliced into features by mischevious animators is not in any way comparable to releasing soft porn. Unless you're a teenager/adult looking for it, you aren't going to see it.

I hope that if it was indeed a private photo that she not be professionally disciplined. And yes, if someone took something private and passed it out for public consumption, they deserve to have their kneecaps shot.

"That's her private life, not her public life. That picture got leaked by somebody who broke a trust with her," said Michele Smith of Westborough, Mass., whose 8-year-old daughter Kathryn is a devoted "High School Musical" fan.
I agree with everything this Smith lady said in the article. I also think that the less a big deal they make out of it, the quicker it will go away.

I think nudity and sexual themes have long been a part of Disney Productions you just need to look hard enough. [Razz]

But seriously, I hope this whole thing just dies so that she can get on with her career. This really won't matter if she and most people just ignore it. I'd be sad if it ended her career. My sister is a huge fan of both High School Musicals, she will be a little sad if she finds this out.

Disney's Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures brands have featured lots of adult-oriented material over the years...but High School Musical is definitely aimed at the 6-12 crowd.

I was referring to the adult themed easter eggs in some of their family targeted animated features.

No, the Rescuers one is definitely real. I have the Naked Woman Edition, and I have verified it.

IIRC, though, the shot was not in the theatrical release.

-o-

As for the Phallus Edition of Little Mermaid (which I also own), I seem to recall the artist admitting it was a phallus (or maybe just that it could be?) but claiming he drew it unconsciously. In any case, it looks extremely, uh, phallic. With veins, even,

Haven't a lot of actors from Disney's live action crap gone on to porn?

Edit for grammar

Get the DVD version of "The Wizard of Oz", look closely, it is an osterich. We always thought it was someone hanging themselves, but with the DVD (and a big TV) you can see it is an Osterich.

Now, there really is a ghost in "Three Men and a Baby". [Razz]

Oh I didn't mean it in a negative way, I just meant I didn't have time to acknowledge what he was saying when the thread turned into a debate about specific instances of the easter eggs I was talking about.

By the time I could get around to saying what I did in my previous post it sounded a bit out of place.

For anybody sensibly not keeping tabs on this story, Disney's not firing Hudgens.
quote:
"Vanessa has apologized for what was obviously a lapse in judgment," said Disney Channel spokeswoman Patti McTeague. "We hope she's learned a valuable lesson."

She said negotiations were ongoing to land all the actors for a "High School Musical 3" feature film — including Hudgens.

How the photos got out in the first place remains unknown.

At some point she needs to transition from being well known amongst teenage girls, to being well known among adults in general.

This was probably an excellent way to do this. I had never heard of her before, now I have.

I hope people will start to learn that privacy is becoming null, and you really just shouldn't trust anyone with a camera when you're naked, especially if you're young [Frown]

brojack, thanks so much for posting that Snopes link on the Wizard of Oz. That weird bit was pointed out to me on a VHS version years ago, and it does look like someone hanging themself. I always wondered about that. But looking closer you can see the ostrich spreading it's wings.

I'm glad to hear Disney's being reasonable. Of course, I'm sure they already have money sunk in High School Musical 3, and it's pretty much a guaranteed hit, so . . .

I believe the original High School Musical garnered the highest ratings of -any- made-for-cable movie aimed at kids, ever.

It's spawned highly lucrative merchandise, smash-hit traveling shows, and now a possible blockbuster motion picture.

Yeah, I'm not thinking they'll be in a hurry to replace her.

The premiere of High School Musical 2 was the highest rated basic cable show ever, bar none. No "aimed at kids," no "made-for-cable movie," no qualifiers. It was the M*A*S*H finale of basic cable.

Anne Hathaway of "Princess Diaries" fame did a pretty racy movie about 2 years ago called "Havoc". It's not really very good, I'm not sure why she chose the role.

I saw both HSM movies last week for the first time, wasn't even sure what they were until part way through, and I have mixed feelings. The kids were all pretty good singers, and it was neat to see a musical for kids, maybe it will set them up to want to see bigger better musicals when they get older.

But the lyrics, dear God, horrible, horrible beyond measure. With the exception of maybe one or two songs they lyrics could have been, and maybe were written by a 10 year old.

The second one was alright, too, for what it was. More good singing, but they jazzed it up with all their electronics stuff and it sounded way too fake, it lacked the real singing quality of the first movie.

I won't buy any of the merchandise, I won't buy the soundtracks, I won't get the DVD, but it was worth watching on a rainy afternoon on tv. It's the first new musical, and yeah, I'd qualify it as a real musical, of the 21st century that I've seen.

I just hope kids raise their expectations when they get older.

I feel sorry for her. It was a private photo; it's not like she posed for Playboy. Just because her fans are young doesn't mean that they can't grasp that an actor is not the character she plays.

Parents might not like explaining that some 18-year-olds make choices that they (those parents) would not like their own kids to make at 18 (or any other age) but after all, they are only explaining reality. It's okay to have a fictional character as a hero, but don't expect the actor playing the character to be as flawless as only a fictional character can be.

Since according to the descriptions she seems to have deliberately posed for the photos, I think Disney would be within its rights to get rid of her for conduct unbecoming a Disney employee. Yes, they're private photos, but they can still hurt her and Disney's image, because once the public knows that Vanessa likes to pose like that they can't un-know it.

But I hope that the public sees it as a stupid thing that a teenager did and doesn't stop seeing her movies because of it. If I was in charge of keeping her or letting her go, I'd wait until I had some proof that this incident would hurt sales before doing the letter.

Well, since Britney Jean Spears is a Disney prodigy and has stumbled through a pop career and the VMA awards a few times and has made about a billion bucks, I think Vanessa will do just fine, especially if she can keep her sanity.
At the moment, can you really use Britney Spears as a great example of success?

Psssst! Don't tell anyone but right now, at this very moment, underneath my clothes, I'm naked.

Has anyone actually seen these photos? I saw a TV gossip report about her being nude, but they were showing a picture of her in a bikini. That's not nude.

Another report indicated the the photos in question were photos of her walking around her bedroom at home. I think a better question than why was she naked, is why and who was taking photos of her in her bedroom. I think if anyone should be in trouble, it should be the person who took the photos. I think they should be in even MORE Trouble for RELEASING these photos.

This seems, like so many tabloid scandals, to be an utter and total NON-Story.

Just my opinion.

I've seen the photos. She is in a bedroom, in various states of undress, and the final one shows her standing, facing the camera, naked. It is obvious from the poses and facial expressions that she is aware of the camera. The poses are also fairly innocent, sweet rather than slutty.

And many cameras have timers. There may not have been anyone else there. The question is, I think, who leaked 'em.
