I watched an episode of House last night where House pronounces "blood" to rhyme with food. It got me wondering... how would one spell that phonetically?

Just write it in IPA.

|blud|

My IPA might be rusty, hopefully if it's wrong Jon Boy can correct me. [Smile]

No, that's right. Of course, I'd use slashes instead of vertical bars, but the characters themselves are correct. Oh, and it probably needs a long vowel mark.

This is one area where English spelling makes it difficult to distinguish between the possible different pronunciations. You could try forms like "blued" or "blude" or "blewd." But then those don't look like a mispronunciation of "blood."

I considered that one, but it looks to me like you're just drawing out the word, not changing the vowel.

Is that the IPA for Singers? Or just IPA in general. [Big Grin]

(sorry. I took a vocal pedagogy class where I had to learn the IPA for Singers, so...I always wonder how different the two actually are, but never bothered to find out for myself)

I've never heard of the IPA for singers, but the Wikipedia article on the IPA says it's also used by singers. Do the symbols there look familiar?

I'm fond of the mixed vowel /blyd/ in case we're mispronouncing it in German or French.

I dunno about Hugh Laurie and "blood" but the way Ewan McGregor says "Moor" in Othello is a thing of great beauty.
