Why does it need to be classified?

If you come at it from a classical perspective/background, I would say it's a folk song.

As a folk singer, I would classify it as a ballad. It tells a story.

From a Balladier perspective/background, I would say it's classical.

I teach an 8th grade music class elective. I try and describe the style of each song we study. This one has been rather difficult to label, making the discussion rather interesting in class. But to answer White Whale, it does not need to be classified to enhance its enjoyment.
