The first 13 of a 2,550 word short story, fiction. Let me know if you would like to read more. Thank you.
Joseph killed himself Thursday morning at 6:00 when he should have been leaving for work. I worked with him for fourteen years, liked him, considered him a good friend, didn’t see his suicide coming at all. None of us did. We were all in shock for weeks. Only gradually, and in my case also grudgingly, did we come to accept it.
A month later I was scanning a document on the printer. I noticed that Joseph’s name was still on the scanner address list. It gave me a crazy idea of scanning a letter and punching his address button, then seeing him in some afterlife paradise, receiving and reading the letter. It made me feel strange to think about his death with humor, but we don’t always control our thoughts as well as we might wish.
