Fireside Magazine is one I've been keeping an eye on. They're new but have already published the likes of Tobias Buckell and Ken Liu, and they have a good slate of well-known writers lined up for coming issues. They're opening to submissions for the first time Aug. 6 and pay 12.5 cents a word for stories from 2,000 to 4,000 words. Submission rejected. I know that is a huge part of writing, but it gets old all too fast. And Form Letter rejections are of no help. If I don’t know why, how can I learn?

Gregg L, just because it didn't sell doesn't mean that there is something wrong with it. A rejection just means that story wasn't for them at that time. There are people who reject bacon, so obviously, even the best things in life get rejected.
For the rest of us waiting on a rejection, when did you submit the flash piece?

I echo what babooher said. Oftentimes, a rejection is a matter of editorial taste. Several pro-paying markets accept flash fiction, so keep trying.

Thanks, I needed that. Fireside has rejected both of my flash submissions. The first one was bounced in less than 2 weeks, this second one at about 35 days. Fireside is in Boston so the editor was tied up with all that mess.
The first flash is rather dark and as my wife says grusome. I will try that one other places anyway.
This last one is a time travel bit with the main charactor discussing good and evil with Jesus back around 4BC. Given the setting I knew from the moment I started the story that it was going to be a hard sell. The story is good, even if it is only me saying so for now, so I will keep it out there hoping for the best.

A little insight into Fireside: Brian, the editor, likes plot-driven stories. Or so he told me when he very nicely turned down my flash today as not being quite right for the market.
