Hatrack Utility Belt, writing toolkit, temporal transrelocation tacklebox, name your poison, how many writing tools do you have at your writing disposal and use?

Of course, there's the actual physical tools: paper and pencil, pen and ink, typewriter, wordprocessor app, audio recorder, marker pens, crayons, storyboard, notebooks, ad infinitum.

Shelves loaded with reference books? Ready to hand and resorted to eagerly or gathering dust? Rhetoric texts (rhetoric is the top tier cataloging category for writing how-tos and poetics and etc.), novels, short story collections, poetry and creative nonfiction maybe. They're the hard copies ready to hand. Internet and library resources too. Digital resources.

But what about the methods and techniques tools? There are six million available, the total word count of the English language. Every word is a tool. Many directly relate though they might have come from other disciplines' usages first. Narrowing down to just what applies to rhetoric, the count still runs into the ten thousands. Narrower still, the basics for creative writing, what, setting, plot, idea, character, event, and discourse? Too basic? Where's your happy medium?

My tool warehouse overflows with tools.
