So here is my problem… In school I was given a “vehicle” and it has met my needs thus far. I am able to make my daily commute with nary a hiccup. But lately I’ve had the urge to leave my normal route and I’m afraid my “vehicle” is not equipped for off road use.
So here is my question… What type of classes are a good start for enhancing general and creative writing skills?
I started a few full length stories but I felt that I was not effectively communicating my ideas with my readers so I switched formats to short stories and found that worked a little better but still not as well as I hoped. I then switched formats again to song writing and found “success“, reaching my audience with mixed results but I did wind up getting a song published. Oh yeah, Howdy ya’ll

No answers about classes, I'm afraid. Sometimes the best way to improve your craft is just to keep writing.

I'm not sure about classes either, but boards like this one are a good way to share ideas and learn from other writers. There are some great topics in the Writing forum, for example.

Welcome. The water is warm and there are very few sharks. The only way to learn is to do; and then learn from others what they think you've done wrong. That's not to say 'they' know what they're talking about, but it gives you somewhere to start.

I am also clueless as to classes. It is all in how you learn. I learn best from books (reading by myself) And writing (and being critiqued here). Nothing beats doing, and here at hatrack, we are all about that. I have those writing book titles if you want them, just email me and ill send 'em your way. Be welcome here. This is an ongoing class where you can eventually learn about everything about writing...until we learn something new that is.
But the benefit of scholarly classes can be and are debated. Some pro writers gave up on them early on but others found some benefit with a class or two.
Grammar could be a good one. Creative writing too.
There are various writing workshops online and life you might also find worthwhile. Not to mention books written by the pros.
However as you go though the learned corridors of the Ivy Treehouse do be careful, my good man. There is this roughish unicorn that shows up now and again. Do be careful with her, sometimes she can be on the mean side.

The "Ivy Treehouse"? Since when did we have ivy? Guess I need to get out there and cut it back. Ivy isn't quite as bad as kudzu, but it can still cover and choke a treehouse.
