The first installment of the weekly submittal challenge!

For full details, go here.

The nutshell version: Each week, you will write a story and submit it. Or each week you will submit a story. So, here's how you work. Sign into the challenge by adding your name to the list and pledging your intent to write and submit a story this week.

At the end of the week, check in by telling us the title of your story and where you submitted it to.

I'm in, though I don't know if I'll be able to get the motivation to start until next week.

Okay, I plan to get a new story submitted this week. I have the idea, now all I have to do is write it.

I feel bad that I won't be following up on this. I've posted the reasons elsewhere. I just want all of you to know that I will miss those of you who have taken part in this thread and wish you the greatest success possible.

What I've learned from this is that I can't write and submit a story in a week, or even two weeks. This challenge has provoked me into inventing a new story, and a new--for me--way of telling a story. But I have to do some research on, get this, the life of spiders, and then some thinking, and some experimentation with a new-for-me way of handling POV, to tell it properly.

If I were to stay with this challenge I'd suggest revising it along the lines of finishing and submitting one story a week, but allowing one to have several in the pipeline, in the way that Star Trek used to have several episodes in various stages of production at any one moment.

But I've decided to leave Hatrack, for reasons I'll mention elsewhere, so, sorry Anne, I'll not be contributing to this challenge further.

Cheers,
Pat

I really would have had it done on time, but this is the first time since last Saturday that I was aware enough for rational comment. It has been a week of needles, IV's, dehumanizing treatment and, invasive proceedures-- maybe next week.

Ok, good story or not, I'm in. Sad to hear Bent Tree is sick and Tale Spinner is leaving.

Welcome back, TS! As for this submittal challenge, I think I realized I can’t write something so quickly. I’d like to get to that point. At the same time, I think I have to respect the process. And if my process tells me I have to mull, well, then, I have to mull.

I wasn't sure if I could do this, so I didn't commit to it at first - I tend to shy away from commitment (I waited until I was 30 to get married).
Anyway, I actually started a story on Monday 8/11 and finished it yesterday 8/12. I know I haven't "proven" myself yet to many of you, but I feel it is quite good (very little narration and a bit of a crowd pleaser).

I have three questions:

1 - Where are we suppose to post the title?
2 - The story is about 2100 words - is that too short and what's a good length? (I know - that's 2 question - sorry)
3 - What do I do now that it's done - where do I send it and how? (I've really blown the whole 3 question thing - can anyone help)

Not trying to hijack Anne here, but I suppose you could post the title here in this thread with the date you submitted and to what market.

2k is a fine length for a short story. Some short story markets won't publish much over 2-4k not to say that is the norm. Most Pro markets print anything from 500-40k

Duotropeis a good source to search a large database of speculative fiction markets. There are others but I have yet to feel compelled to use them as Duotrope is pretty thorough.

Congratulations on your story. Best of luck submitting. Be sure to check out the individual submission requirements of each publication. There is almost always a clear submissions guidelines link associated with each publications homepage.

you are givin me some inspiration. I have been lacking this week as I am nursing a malady, but that is no excuse. I can still type and think clearly.

LUCK!

No worries, BentTree!

You can put the title in this thread, listed by where you end up submitting it to.

And Duotrope is just about the best resource I can think of. Most venues will list how short a story they will consider. Usually there's a hard upper limit, but it seems many of them want shorter stuff.

Bent Tree

Thanks for the information. I hope you feel better. About five years ago, I ended up in the hospital with IVs and invasive procedures at the hands of doctors who must have specialized in archaic torture devices. It was quite painful and humilliating. I hope you faired better than I did. Good luck on your writing.

Chuck

I shall now throw down the gauntlet!

My short story is called "The Trade-in"
I am submitting it to Asimov's Science Fiction - Why not aim big? What do I have to lose?
