Out of consideration for TomD (vocal) and others (not so vocal) who get frustrated with the number of "Dobie" threads out there, I was wondering if we might not confine all our "Dobie thread" titles to a single thread. We could post what the title of the thread would be, and the link if applicable. Responses could include Dobie-ratings, if merited. This would help to avoid having "real" threads bumped off the first page so quickly, also.
Frequently, I just come up with the title for a Dobie thread, but am unable to find a suitable link. That could be another function of this thread -- someone posts a Dobie title, and someone else can provide a link. Right now, for example, I'd love to have come up with a good link for a "Bad Day for Humus" thread.
Whaddya all think?
--Pop
<Suspects that someone will "Dobie" this thread soon anyway, just for the sake of having done it.>
*Edit -- definition, for the underinformed. Dobie was a Hatracker some time ago, who had an uncanny knack for comedy by posting new topics that varied only slightly from other current topic names. He would then include a link as the body of his topic. He is gone now, but the legend lives on. A "Dobie," therefore, has become the Hatrack term referring to this particular type of parody thread. When one is posted, it is often rated (anywhere from zero to 5 Dobie points seems fairly standard). Some Dobies are linkless (only parodying thread title and/or content), and may often go unrecognized. I'm sure I am leaving something out, but there you go.
Also, as we move forward, it might be good to include the title of the original threads along with the Dobie titles, so we know how clever you were. I think I'll post this idea at the current end of the thread, too.

We could consolidate all the serious topics into one thread, so that those of us who enjoy humor more than kicking dead horses don't have to worry about the funny stuff being dropped to the second page.
I'm just too lazy to look for something, even if it interests me. Hitting the Page 2 link is exhausting.
I don't think the couple in that picture feel very guilty. Maybe they should call that number. For only $2.99/min - why, that's cheaper than joining a religion!

By the way, apparently today, August 17th, is Dobie's Birthday. Let's hear it for him! Post your Dobie thread here today in honor of the man!
Edit -- apparently this information may have been incorrect. His birthday is listed at another site as August 17, but I didn't notice the year was 2002. Probably a glitch in that site, and if nothing is entered it shows the current date. Well, here's to Dobie anyway....
Sidenote -- it's my half-birthday. So that's something, at least.

<Trying to bring back this thread, because I saw a number of Dobies while I was catching up from being sick.>
And going forward, it might be good to include the title of the thread you're Dobie-ing, perhaps with a link to the original topic. Then we know whether or not we've been highly clever.
As a slight aside, one of the things I wish you could do on this forum is to make sticky threads--like this one.

Hmm...the guy who wrote that article probably got a lot of hate mail. Dave Barry wrote an article about US/France relations that was really hilarious. Wish I had a link.
But the gyst of his opening remarks were:
The French think Americans are loud, overweight, and all drive SUVs.
The Americans the French are cowards, rude and smell bad.
We're both right.
Then he gives some handy phrases in French that an American can use to break the ice with a French Person.
My favorite was the one inviting them to visit the nearest mega-mall with you. Then you tell them that they can surrender to the Security Guard -- no no, just teasing you there, buddy...

Nick, you need to post a link to some site that gives a humorous twist to your "dobie." Otherwise you are just mocking the title of another thread.
And while I'm at it, is it just me or is posting in this thread far less satisfying than actually creating the Dobie and posting it as a new thread?

Two things, Erik. Well, three, actually. One, thanks for bumping and using this thread. Two, I'm not sure you get the idea of a Dobie. You're supposed to link to something having to do with the new title. Linking to the original thread just didn't make sense. Three, a crucial aspect of Dobies (in my opinion, anyway) is timing. Dobie-ing a thread that is two days old, even if it's still on the first page, is an uphill battle. If you've had two days to think about how to make a joke of something, it better be really good.
I think maybe you were funnier when you were a girl. I mean, when people thought you were. I mean, when people kept thinking it and saying it and you had to keep denying it. Yeah, that was pretty funny. Um.... San Dimas High School Football Rules!

(Welcome to 2004, Dobie Thread Thread)
Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
One of the problems when one Dobies a thread that's six months old is that whether one's link is funnier or not doesn't seem to matter. There should be a rule that any Dobie must be posted within a specific time-frame from the time the original thread is posted, and at the rate this forum moves, it should be a short time. Maybe a few hours.
But I still think you're among the funniest on the board, Jeff. Possibly in the number one spot, in fact.
Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :
Okay, so this one's a little low-brow, and the thread is an "old" one, but I had to post something so that I could say a few things:
Good rule, Papa Moose. Woops on my part. T. Analog Kid's was actually a little more artful than mine because he used the thread that he was Dobie-ing as the url for the Dobie. How often is that possible?
And Jon Boy, I woulda done the same thing except I couldn't find a good picture of Rosie ODonnell. You know, the one where she's got that butch haircut and she looks angry and hungry at the same time. That would've been pretty funny too.

I have to reformat this one to more thoroughly Dobie the target thread:
Dobie thread title: Will breeding save the masses? Dobie thread post: Mexico City thinks so.
A little while ago, I realized that I use the phase "roly poly" to refer to isopods, and since then I was curious I looked up pill bug.
quote:NOUN: Also called wood louse. also called regionally Regional doodlebug. 1. A small terrestrial isopod crustacean of the genus Armadillidium closely related to the sow bug and having a convex, segmented, flexible body enabling it to curl into a ball when disturbed. In this sense also called roly-poly. 2. A sow bug. In both senses also called slater.
USAGE NOTE: Many people, especially science teachers, like to make a distinction between pill bugs and sow bugs. According to this usage, a pill bug, or roly-poly, is a terrestrial isopod crustacean whose segmented body gives it the ability to curl up into a ball when disturbed. A sow bug is any of several similar looking creatures that lack this ability. In popular usage, however, the names pill bug and sow bug, along with a number of other popular names, are used to refer to any of these tiny segmented crustaceans that are often mistaken for insects.
Anyone else have fun entymology stuff to share?

I momentarily considered creating a dobie for the "Semi-Nude Gardening" thread entitled "Semi-Nude Gathering." It would have suggested going swimming somewhere in Wisconsin during the late spring/early summer (possibly in a quarry or something), but better sense prevailed and I decided against it.

Another idea:
"The internet makes you stupid" to "The intent makes you stupid." It's subtle and would have been great if I had dobied it early on. If I had actually gone through it, I would have made it a true dobie and had it a parody of the original thread (with a funny link of course). I might even do it if the initial post weren't so long on the original thread. It would take me faaaar too long to dobie that sucker.
