Because giving Superman a new costume 10 years ago was such a magnificent success.

But..... red and blue is Spiderman [Frown]

To be fair, this is -probably- temporary. Apparently it's part of another big Marvel crossover event in which a bunch of secondary characters will be killed off and a bunch of major heroes "messed up" in the name of short term sales boosts.

Still, it's pretty darn ugly. [Razz]

WRONG!! SICK AND WRONG!!! PERVERSION OF THE NATURAL ORDER!!!

He...he's blue and red... and humble and good! Not with the, then violence of the yellow...and the anger... oh dear.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I think that the standard blue-red Spider-Man costume is one of the lamest superhero costumes around.

Posted by Princess Leah (Member # 6026) on :

Please! That's what makes it so powerful! He's not Bruce Wayne, with the resources to get all sorts of nifty gadgets. Nor is he that macho man perversion called Superman. He's just a kid with greatness thrust upon him... it's fitting!

Has it really been ten years since they tried to make Superman white and blue?

And who knows, maybe this suit will ALSO be some sort of sentient life form, which PP ends up discarding in favor of the good 'ol traditional, that ends up making its way to one of Spidey's worst enemies, thus creating one of the greatest arch-rivalries ever!

Also, it's entirely possible they're doing another series (ala 2099) or creating a second Spidey (ala Green Lantern).

Oh, the envy. I didn't even know they made a complete collection - now I have to go find it and buy it and eat it with strawberries.

Posted by starLisa (Member # 8384) on :

Huh. Last time they gave Spidey a new costume, it tried to eat him eventually. You'd think he'd be a bit wary of trying it again.

And what is it, right after the most recent Secret Wars ended? Does he get a new costume every time they have a Secret War?

Weird...

What is C&H?

Oh, and he had 4 costumes at once during Identity Crisis. But I think most fans want to forget those 2-3 years surrounding that never happened.

Actually, you're right. Superman's new powers (that brought on the Blue and White look) debuted in late '96, but the costume/azure skin pallor didn't turn up until early '97.

So, 9 years. [Smile]

According to Marvel, the wearer of the suit will be Peter Parker, of the normal Marvel Universe, in the modern time.

The suit's designed by Tony Stark, or something.

(Right up there with the Iron Man suit that included a nose, design-wise.)

Everything is connected to Spider-Man!

Or to Batman.

Say, did you know that a recent Fantastic 4 story by JMS (the "Babylon 5" guy) revealed that the entire Marvel Universe was created by Reed Richards? Including the "accident" that turned Ben Grimm into the Thing?

He's also the guy who revealed Gwen Stacy was in love with the Green Goblin and bore his illegitmate children. [Eek!]

That was Venom Spidey. That's more a symptom of psychosis than anything else.

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

He doesn't wear that one because it resembles the alien costume that tried to take over him...and eventually became Venom.

Posted by Fahim (Member # 5482) on :

Well, given the whole The Other storyline going on currently and all the changes made to Peter's character, it was only to be expected that they were going to revamp the costume ... amongst other things. They are also talking about an "unexpected" new villain - don't tell me they're bringing Ben Reilly back from the dead as a villain a la what I believe is going on over in Batman with the Red Hood thing (don't know what that really is about - haven't read any of it [Razz] ) But if this is the final costume design, it's just too ugly ... and way too much like Iron Man's ... but then again, I guess that is the point.

Posted by Fahim (Member # 5482) on :

OK, for anybody who cares (is there anybody who actually cares about Spidey's costume that much besides me? [Razz] ), here's what Marvel has to say about the whole thing:

Word has been building for months now, and comic fans have been dying to know- what is Spider-Man’s new costume?! Well, folks, here it is! Recognize the color scheme? You should, it’s playing an important role in the future of the web-slinger!

After the shocking events in "The Other" storyline, Peter recieves this new costume to help him adjust to his newest developments, as well as giving him some added muscle! Designed by Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada, this new design has a few tricks up its sleeve. "The Iron Spider design- as I like to call it- came to me during a Spider-Man story meeting we were having, we were talking and I was involuntarily sketching on a pad. It's inspired by a sketch that Chris Bachalo did that showed a new Spidey costume with <CLASSIFIED>. I thought that was brilliant, especially since it echoed one of Spidey's greatest villains, and I took the idea and imagined it as though seeing it through the eyes of Tony Stark. The sky's the limit with respect to gadgetry when it comes to Tony inspired costumes."

Every "gift" has its cost, and this new look for Spidey will signal the beginnings of change, especially as it comes on the eve of the upcoming Civil War. Spider-Man has developed a growing trust and friendship with Iron Man, but how much in debt is Peter’s loyalty to Tony Stark going to cost him in the long run? If the color scheme is any indication, well... Joe Quesada says, "I imagined Tony presenting Peter with the new suit and Peter putting it on and saying that it looks great but that his colors are red and blue. Tony would simply respond, ‘My design, my colors!’"

What is it that Joe is talking about that’s classified? How will Spidey’s relationship to Tony - and the new costume- play into Civil War?! You’ll have to read the books to see! But, it is safe to say that when it comes to this new costume, there is much more to the story! Look for the new costume to debut in February’s Amazing Spider-Man #529. It will then be seen in the pages of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Marvel Knights Spider-Man in April. For more news on Spider-Man, the costume, and Civil War, stay tuned, True Believers!

Posted by Fahim (Member # 5482) on :

LOL. To be technical, I have a feeling that Peter's new costume is not going to be exactly clothing - it's probably a version of the armour that Iron Man wears ... yes, I know, way too much comics information for anybody [Razz]

Now does everyone understand my pathological need to use that axe I have hanging by the back door?

For some reason Fahim reminds me of Tzadik, the way they both come across online. It's probably just the "Dear Hatrack, I'm getting married and moving to..." aspect of them both that makes me see other similarities. [Smile]

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

I don't see why everyone's so attached to the costume. Comics, by their very nature, are transient and subject to change.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Tzadik posted a "Dear Hatrack, I'm getting married and moving to..."? But then, Fahim didn't either... He merely posted in it and was the object of the thread. Hmm.

[/nitpick]

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

If that were true, Primal, then Spider-Man would have retired due to old age long ago. [Wink]

Dagonee -- C&H wasn't connected to comics in this thread, it's connected to something I said: "Verbing weirds language." It's something that Calvin said once.

Yep, I recognized it once pointed out to me. I must have skimmed over it the first time.

On of my favorite C&H quotes of all time, right after, "But not today. Today I go for the gusto."

True, but how many comic characters have had their pasts re-written to better suit the author's ideas?

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

And yet, several times writers have tried to put their own stamp on an iconic character only to have readers reject it and pretend it never happened. Clone Saga, anyone? Anyone really think Gwen had children?

When the characters stray too far from what made them icons, their story fails and readers complain or go away. Occasionally reinventions and reinterpretations can succeed but only if they can tap into what made the character great in the first place (and here I'm thinking Ultimate Spiderman) and only if the original character is left more or less alone.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Is the suit really what makes Spiderman iconic?

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

Not entirely, but it is vital. An icon is immediately recognizable. The costume is part of that. Minor details can change - whether or not he has underarm webs, Superman's hair length, the color of Batman's chest symbol - but the version that people recognize becomes important.

Posted by Black Mage (Member # 5800) on :

Besides, yellow is so tacky.

Posted by Lissande (Member # 350) on :

quid - no, both you and I posted those threads, about Fahim and Tzadik. So what they have in common is foreign wives who moved across the world to be with them (and posted about it on Hatrack). Though not quite in identical ways, I'll grant. And they both speak, like, five languages.

Posted by MyrddinFyre (Member # 2576) on :

Eeeew, ugly. I really think they should have just updated his traditional suit, made it more modern but kept the cool spider-web-idea and the red.

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

Don't worry. It won't last. It never does. He'll go through trials and tribulations and at some point he'll reach into a closet or a bag or a garbage can or something and they will be a full page, possibly a double page spread of Spidey in his old duds.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Is this suit going to appear in the JMS continuity or the Ultimate continuity?

Posted by Puffy Treat (Member # 7210) on :

JMS. It's part of "Civil War" the upcoming Marvel mega-epic-this-time-we-REALLY-mean-the-internet-will-split-in-HALF crossover.

Thanks for the ride down memory lane aspectre [Smile] That page made me remember some great moments from Spidey history [Razz] Of course, there were all the non-Spider-man outfits from the period when the four spider books were split off into four different characters - Ricochet is the only one I remember. I guess those don't even count since Peter wasn't Spider-man ...

Bendis -loves- Wolverine.

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

I loved me some Bendis, at first. I still love the Ultimate Spider-Man series, and Powers.

But does everything he writes have to a) include Spider-Man, Wolverine, Power Man, and Daredevil, b) expose someone's identity, and c) shatter some portion of the Marvel Universe? It's gotten so whenever I read his stuff I start betting with myself to see how long before Wolverine shows up.

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

If I ever get a job at Marvel, the secret thrust of all my stories will be to put all things in a position to make Wolverine look absolutely, irredeemably pathetic.

Posted by Fahim (Member # 5482) on :

Ah Wolvie's not so bad, stop bashing on him [Razz] Now, I don't think I really like any of the current crop of Marvel super-star writers ... I didn't get back into comics till Bendis was over the hill and into his declining phase [Razz] I loved the early Spider-mah stories by JMS (the ones which had a very human touch) but hated the Gwen giving birth to twins stuff. I did want to pick up some of the new Peter David stuff - I loved his work on Hulk but hadn't read anything else by him ...

Don't sell him short, Chris!

Everything he writes -also- has to include Jessica Jones and have a non-star of the comic turn up during the climax to explain what the heck the point of the plot we just read was.

(See Dr. Strange in "Chaos" and Emma Frost in "The Sentry" arcs of his Avengers stories.)

Posted by aspectre (Member # 2222) on :

It's Fahim's mirror*neurons, quidscribis, kicking in to remind him of the good ol' days when he could take his part in the SecretWar to protect normal humanity from Kree, Shia'ar, Skrull, etc invaders seeking to overrun the Earth and enslave its inhabitants.
Then he fell in love... sigh... We lose more good men in tights that way...

OK, Marvel is doing it again.

They got all contrite at the time they did the Heroes reborn storyline. Each individual title would be self-contained enough that it could be read individually without knowing what's going on.

So (SPOILERS FOR JMS Amazing title) why the hell is Spider-man an Avenger and I've heard nothing about it in the JMS books? Grrrr. That's why I stopped reading the old titles in the first place.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

You didn't wonder why Spider-Man had moved into the Stark building after his house burnt down? Or was hanging out with the Avengers all the time?

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

That's the first I heard of him being an Avenger (I mean, except for his part-time association from the mid-80s).

I'm reading the TBPs, so that's all I'm up to. But nowhere in the JMS story does it even mention the new association until the house burns down.

I wasn't sure how Tony knew about Peter in the Skin storyline, but that didn't seem that big.

(Edit: So yes, this entire post is me wondering why he moved into Stark Towers. [Smile] )

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Spiderman's an Avenger? (And that was all I said. Fahim's immediate reactions... "Yeah." Pause. "Where're you reading this anyway?" I can see his eyes growing big as he glances over at my computer and the saliva drips off his chin...)
