The Headlines:

OSC Posts!

While certain segments of Hatrack have begun to doubt the very existence of the famed writer, Orson Scott Card himself posted to ask for help. This unexpected event caused a flurry of activity on the Discussions About Orson Scott Card side of the board. Many jatraqueros rushed to aide the author, jumping past others who had swooned in the presence of his post.

Grammar Debate Continued!

In what could only be described as an editor's nightmare, the debate raged on about the proper use of everything from punctuation to grammar. In a related story, Orson Scott Card makes a typo.

Icarus Named President of Hatrack Geeks Club!

Saxon75 conceded the race for President of the Hatrack Geeks Club to Icarus. It turned out to be a very close race with only a 1 vote difference between the two candidates. Cabinet positions are now being filled although the actual responsibilities of these positions are not yet determined. In fact, the responsibilities of the President are not yet determined either.

Book Recommendations!

Always a pleasent distraction, many jatraqueros have recommended quality literature over the years to each other and in this thread the tradition continues! [ed note: Pay careful attention to the recomendations by Godric, I have on first hand information that they're good ones]

I LOVE this idea! Someone with unlimited time should read ALL of hatrack, and summarize what goes on each day with appropriate links. That way I can decide better if it's worth reading, than just going by the externals of the thread, the topic heading and number of posts it has.

Ouch! T, pay no attention to Caleb, he's just jealous. You'd be more than welocome to take over as the true originator and writer of Hatrack Headlines (I like that, it has a certain ring to it). Just be sure to mention Ralphie every so often to keep her pacified.

The Headlines:

"Today at Hatrack!" changes name!

After a bitter debate between T_Smith and Godric about the origins of the idea behind a headlines thread, Today at Hatrack changes it's name to Hatrack Headlines!

Newbie Challenges Slash!

It all started out innocently enough with a greeting from newbie strawberrygirl -- until Slash the Berzerker decided to eat her. Hatrack regulars are used to this bizarre custom by the resident komodo dragon, but this time things got out of hand when, instead of being submisively swallowed, strawberrygirl threatens to beat up Slash! One witness, mackillian commented, "Oh, I like her."

Ralphie!

Patrick falls off trampoline; pictures taken

At the Utah Jatraquero Picnic on Saturday, the famed Patrick and his evil henchman, Jon Boy, met in person for the first time. Though Patrick admitted that Jon Boy is hilarious, he neglected to give Jon Boy the five dollars that he owes him for burninating Grobania.

Later, Patrick played on the trampoline with Amka and Vlad's kids. While getting off, he fell flat on the ground. Preliminary reports indicate that Patrick was not injured, though he did receive a standing ovation. Several pictures were taken to capture the event for future generations.

There are so many sobering threads at the top of the list today. Some are heartbreaking and some just wrench our sympathy. They all make us better people, which is why I come to Hatrack.

So, trust me to throw some pure bonafide fluff right in the middle of it. I thought of starting a new thread, but I realized that this stuff fits right here. [Wink]

I just wanted to recognize that the Begging the Question thread had reached it's 1 year anniversary on April 11th. I'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but I missed it's birthday and this is a belated party.

*pulls out a triple-decker chocolate cake with strawberry filling*

The Headlines:

Is your reputation everything you'd hoped for?

Is your online reputation everything you want it to be? Are you being perceived as someone you're not? Do typos and spelling mistakes make you appear to be ignorant instead of the wise and insightful person you know yourself to be? This thread ponders these pressing questions.

Newbies Everywhere!

The Hatrack community has been growing by leaps and bounds recently. Newbies can find out the answers to a lot of questions here along with plenty of useless banter to hold your interest. In a related story, the debate about over-population is de-railed.

Ethics Gradient shamelessly bumps own Landmark Post thread!

The headline says it all.

The Headlines:

Godric enjoys a day off as Narnia supplies headlines!

The much heralded Editor-in-Chief of Hatrack Headlines, Godric, takes a day off. Sifting through all the threads on Hatrack can be taxing work and having some time off is just the thing to encourage proper mental health and overall sanity. The illustrious Narnia can be found holding down the fort as Godric spends his day off sipping some Sweet, Sweet Nectars, being Burninated and finally relaxing with some Even Better Nectars.

The Headlines:

Bob_Scopatz reaches 10,000 posts!

"I'm very worried about the Internet," Walter Cronkite was once quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle, "People get on there and pretend they're giving the news and have absolutely no ethical standards on which they're operating and no facilities, nor experience to do it. It's a very dangerous thing."

I am sorry about worrying Mr. Cronkite, but I believe that the ethics of journalism are on shakey ground not solely on the internet, but through the traditional outlets of television, radio and newspaper as well. I bring this up because I am about to break one of the cardinal rules of news reporting, thus compromising some of those ethical standards that Mr. Cronkite was worried about -- I am going to comment on the news.

Bob_Scopatz is the second person to reach the 10,000 post mark on Hatrack, the first being TomDavidson. While the merits of this achievement are discussed in Bob's post himself, what is clear is that this event is undeniably a landmark.

There are many issues to ponder about this event. Why is this number, other than it's sheer magnitude, so important to us? How much time has Bob spent at Hatrack reading and posting that could have been put to better use elsewhere? And, most importantly, how can Bob still be so funny after 10,000 posts?

Bob noted that he is "turning into a lurker." This doesn't come as much of a surprise after some consideration. Given the number of new members who have recently joined Hatrack who will almost certainly bring up subjects that have already been thoroughly discussed and beaten to a bloody pulp by members such as Bob who have been around for a few years, who wants to read, much less respond to it all all over again?

Bob, however, is not merely an icon here at Hatrack, but a living, breathing person who has had a lot to share with other members of this board -- past, present and future. I say future because whether Bob becomes a full-fledged lurker or even disappears from the Hatrack board forever (which would be a great and terrible loss for Hatrackers and Hatrackers-to-come), he will live on in the memories of those he interacted with here. Bob has brightened many a Jatraquero's day with threads such as God, you say, The ice cream personality profile and the always classic, Instant Classic. He has also shown both great respect and humanity by posting retrospectives from banned members.

While Bob was not the first to reach 10,000 posts at Hatrack, neither is he just a number.

Here's to Bob!
