Because I still don't know if I'll get a visa and stuff, but I'd love to come over for a few weeks in the summer, Hatrackon or not.

But anyways:

Boon gave me the idea - a road trip. I could stay a couple days with a Hatracker, who would then drive me to another Hatracker; we'd hang out, then Hatracker 1 would go back home, while Hatracker 2 would take me to Hatracker 3 etc.

Basically, I'd spend a day (or 2 or 3) with several Hatrackers, visiting several places...

What do you think?

*curses the fates for not having a car*

But wait, I have an idea. Kama, if you're in a city visiting a Hatracker, and there just happens to be other Hatrackers in the same city, what's to stop more visiting than one at a time? [Smile]

Yeah, I'm game too! In fact, Boon and FarmGirl aren't too terribly far from Caleb and tabithecat. Who in turn aren't horribly far from where I am...Or they're actually even closer to where dkw is.

As the nazgul flies anyway.

And let's see...TomD and katharina are here in TX...and some others even, right? I've forgotten.

But there's also John Keats who has a friend in Dallas and could maybe come down again to TX.

I'm still trying to get Icarus & Cor to come to TX. Maybe they could take you back to FL...big clump in FL.

Kama...you'd better plan on spending at least 3 months.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

I'm probably within an easy drive of Farmgirl. So if you make it to the midwest, that's a link.

If you could find a way that you fly in to the east coast and out from the west coast (or the reverse) it would be kind of fun to see if we could pass you all the way across the country. [Big Grin]

I could make a stop for the Con in the middle of my trip or something [Wink]

Tom...I'm sorry. I thought you lived in TX. Where are you?

Oh well.

SOMEONE else lives in TX and I've forgotten who that is...(besides Kat, of course).

I like the idea of passing Kama across the country from East to West or vice versa.

I think part of your trip should be along the I-10 corridor. We could even take you to New Orleans which is either the best or the worst place in the country (if not the world) depending on ones point of view.

Also, I wouldn't mind driving you up from TX to the Kansas/Missouri folks or down from there to TX or from TX to someplace East (or West) Whatever works. I'll take a least one "leg" of Kama.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Kayla is up there in the Midwest as well.

It looks to me like she needs to land in NYC, swing down the eastern seaboard, across the southern U.S. to California, then back across the northern U.S. hitting the midwest and Chicago for the con, then back through Philly to NYC. Looks like a perfect itenarary to me. [Smile]

With my luck though, during the two weeks you are bumbing around the US, I'll be in Russia getting the my kids.

All right, I know this is a very early planning stage, but how much of a trip would be possible in 3 weeks? I mean, Ak's idea is great, but I doubt I'd have enough time for that... So I might be limited to the east and mid-east? Or not?

You could make it coast to coast and back in three weeks if you wanted to spend the whole time driving.

Assuming that you only want to drive, say, 4-8 hours per day and only drive every other day, you could still zig-zag across the country, just not back again.

Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :

Hmmm...

I think limiting this to the eastern part of the country would be rational... and I'd still have the reason to go back next time [Wink]

So, what? A circle including NYC, Texas, Oklahoma and Chicago? What else? Florida? Is that good for 3 weeks of not-only-driving-but also-having-fun?

I suppose I could take a plane/bus/train? to skip any Jatraquero-less areas...

I'd be delighted to have you if I'm in the country. Right now, though still nothing is finalized until I finish this San Francisco job, I'm planning to be in Iraq before then.

(Btw, I'm leaving Tuesday morning to go to San Francisco for at least 3 weeks. I will most likely have limited internet access while I'm there since the hotel wants to charge $10 a NIGHT for internet. I'll probably be able to snatch a few minutes here and there at the office to send email written offline, or else I'll find an internet cafe somewhere close by and be able to post a bit, but I'll probably be mostly gone. I'm taking a couple of dozen books to read instead. <grins>)

Wadda ya say, Bob? Take a couple days off to drive K.A.M.A and hang out in the Big Easy?

At this point, I'm also thinking about coming to Chicago for the Hatrackon...hatracon...Jatraquon?

If this were to happen, my dad would be babysitting my 2 older kids for as long as I'd like to be gone, and I'd be driving. Which means, Kama, that you'd be more than welcome to ride back south with me and my new baby, with as many detours/layovers as we want to take.

Just a thought...

Though when it comes to conversation, I've noticed I'm prone to Freudian slips. Watch out for those.

Umm, rather than NYC (or preferably, in ADDITION to), I think a trip to Boston is in order. We do hold the record for largest non-EnderCon meeting of Jatraqueros (do we still hold this record?).

We have Mack, Dragon, Myr, Sarahdipity, Suneun, Paul, Me, and a few others I am forgetting... Plus, you can save some money by bussing/taking the train from Boston to NYC for shmucks like Leto. You do know he's really from Jersey, right?

In any case, I hope you have a fine time in the US, with or without Boston (though it's tougher without!).

oooo.... that's not a real good idea of a time for coming through Kansas. I'm mean, you're still welcome to come by, but Kansas in August (and Texas, for that matter) is over 100-degree F temps (That means 37 to 40 degrees Celsius!).

And, uh, my home has no air conditioning.

However, I would be happy to pay for your stay at a local motel, or maybe with my sister nearby who does have air conditioning. I just know our German foreign exchange student HATED the heat of August here.

Just thought I'd mention it...

Hmm...

Would it make a difference if it was the end of August, rather than beginning?

I said August with the thought of HatrackCon in mind, as it seemed to be the date most suited for most. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to make it much earlier (say, June); I don't know if it could be later (September?). I still need to talk about it with my boss, but I won't be able to before my contract is prolonged, which will be at the end of February - I will be able to make more specific plans then.

I suppose, in the worst case scenario, I will just try and endure the weather [Smile]

Anyways, the central thing would be to set the Con date and find out when the people who are willing to carry the Kama burden will actually have the time to do it.

Lesse... If you could manage to get to somewhere in Texas/Baton Rogue, since I live between the two, I would galdly drive you from one to another. Toretha lives in Batorn Rogue (I think someone else as well). We have two big couches you can crash on (unless you're alergic to dogs: Grace gets up on them all the time, so the house fair reeks of dog), although it would have to be for only one night. I don't think Mom would be too keen on the idea, but I have another place you could stay... If Correlle doesn't sell her house. [Laugh]

Methinks we should get a map and start putting pushpins in certain locations, so we can plot stops.

August, however, is NOT a good idea. August is so, so hot here. I promise that there is no area of Poland as miserable as the South in August. In fact, July - September is almost universally unbearable. It's sub-tropical here, and it's just terrible for schlepping about.

On the other hand, we do live here. So, it must be bearable some way. I just think you'd have more fun if stepping outside wasn't like swimming in boiling fog. That doesn't mean you can't have fun, it just means fun usually happens inside. And make sure every Hatracker driving has air conditioning!!!

Well, I didn't make a cash donation to Kama's flight, but I have relatives in Chicago, New York, Washington DC, and Florida. And then I would have to get back to Utah, which could happen via LA/TX etc. (a trip from DC to FL could involve stalking OSC himself in NC). Of course, these are extremely vague possibilities. But my daughter really wants to do a road trip this summer.

I could do a psychadelic paint job on my van, something about Ender's Game.

You know, maybe it's just because I've grown up with it, but I don't see what the big deal is about mid-western summers. I mean sure, it's hot, and sure, it's humid, but it's never really bothered me. I'm most familiar with the NE Kansas variety of August weather, but I've experienced Austin and Houston in August as well.

Besides, won't the trip be more memorable for the extreme weather?

I say proceed with August, and let heat and humidity be damned!

Temperate continental with clearly marked four seasons.

The best hotel bargains can be found in June, July and August, but be prepared for temperatures at or above 90 F/32 C and humidity of 66% or higher. Pace your sightseeing if you go at that time, and dress appropriately -- the humidity can be exhausting. Frequent afternoon thunderstorms help cool things down.

July is technically the hottest month, but August seems hotter. I don't know if it is the lack of holidays, or that summer has been going on so long, or the anticipation of it being over. I also have this mental image of the earth being warmed a little every day and cooling at night. So even though there is less sun coming down, the cumulative baking of the earth has progressed more.

The east coast, especially the DC area, is very "muggy" meaning humid, in the summer.

Texas can get hot, but it's a dry heat. I liked Texas when I was there in the summer. But it depends on what part.

Chicago you never know what you are going to get. It is on a giant lake so it can be humid, but I hear it hasn't been to bad the last couple of years. It's also fairly far north.

In a hypothetical road trip, it would be 20 hours driving between Utah and Chicago. 14 between Chicago and New York. 6 between New York and DC. I'm a little foggy on moving south on the east coast, but maybe 6 to Greensboro? And another 12 on down to Florida. I've never actually been to Florida, but my sister moved there last year. I'm not as sure about Louisiana (LA) and Texas. Though my quickest drive from DC to Utah was on I-40, though the top parts of the South. I know that between Utah and Central California is like 12 hours, and another 5 hours to get to Southern California.

If I had no other commitments, I would prefer to drive in April or October. Fall and Spring are really lovely everywhere I've been. But now that I've got a kid in school it would mean compressing the trip much more than I would be otherwise inclined to do.

I don't really think the weather has a chance.

Would it make a difference if it was the end of August, rather than beginning?
Not really, August is pretty much hot from start to finish. It doesn't really start to cool down in the midwest, typically, until the middle of September. What is Poland's August weather like?

By the way, certain parts of Texas may be dry, but other parts, like Houston, have been incredibly humid in my experience. I assume it's from the Gulf of Mexico. Not that the humidity is a problem, but just so you know.

There's more in and around southern Indiana, so Kama should go there [Smile] .

Gosh darnit, I think there must be an Anti-California Cabal or something. Well, ha! There's plenty of us SoCal Hatrack Folk already, so we'll just have fun at our own get-togethers! And none of you are invited! And we have the best get-togethers ever! Ever! Ha!

OK, fine, you can come if you want. But only 'cause I wouldn't want to deprive anyone of the pleasure of my company.

Just by looking at the map, southern Indiana seems in the reach (?)

Right after I'm sure I get the visa (beginning of March, d'oh) we may start planning this for real, with dates, distances, places and such. (we, since I obviously won't be able to plan much on my own [Wink] ) Yes? That would leave us with over 4 months in which to plan things? That seems enough, right? I suppose I would have to make plane reservations pretty early on, too.

Wow, this thread is a real postcount++ for me.

Really? And I've only been to one [Razz] , I need to learn to drive so I can go to more gatherings [Blushing] .

(And if I learn to drive before this trip takes place I might be able to provide [or rather convince my parents to provide] one of stops along the way, we usually have at least one empty bed room, and I am only about 2 hours away from blacwolve and company)

I say proceed with August, and let heat and humidity be damned!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Don't do this to me again!!!!

I probably won't be here august, I'm going to Israel next year, and I think the year starts in august (I have to go to a "summer session") this is the second time there'll be a gathering that at least stops by my area (Southern Indiana) and I won't be able to come!!!! [Frown] [Frown] [Frown]
